Newly-appointed Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle is expected to arrive in Nigeria with three of his trusted assistants.

Chelle is expected in Abuja on Sunday to finalise the details of his contract.

The 47-year-old was named the new Super Eagles head coach by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, yesterday.

Meanwhile, mixed reactions have trailed the appointment of Eric Chelle as the Super Eagles Head Coach.

Reacting, Former sub-committee member of the NFF, Christopher Green, has called on the NFF to provide a suitable environment for the new Super Eagles coach to succeed.

However, a former chairman of Gombe FA, Gara Gombe has tagged the newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, as a baby coach.

Mr Gombe noted that the NFF had taken Nigerian football backwards with Chelle’s appointment.

An Abeokuta-based Sports journalist, Mr Hakeem Adegbenro said the Super Eagles, as a brand, was bigger than just ordinary coach to handle.

Mr Adegbenro described the appointment of the Malian as Super Eagles’ handler as a slap on the faces of Nigerian coaches whom he submitted were better than Éric Sékou Chelle.

Also, a grassroots coach, Mr Femi Bamigboye said Nigerian coaches should have been considered if they applied for the job instead of the Malian.

Mr Bamigboye who is the founder of Remo Football Academy said he could only wish the new coach well since NFF had  confirmed his appointment

Éric Sékou Chelle is a professional football manager and a former player who played as a centre-back.

Born in Ivory Coast to a French father and a Malian mother, he made five appearances for the Mali national team.

In 2022, Chelle was appointed manager of Mali and guided the Eagles of Mali to the Quarter-Finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in 2024, losing to hosts Cote D’Ivoire in Extra Time.

He was dismissed on 13 June 2024.

Players and coaches of Nigeria’s senior men’s team, the Super Eagles, have assured of their determination to earn a spot at the 22nd FIFA World Cup finals, holding in Qatar 14th November – 18th December this year.

Captain Ahmed Musa said, “The FIFA World Cup is the biggest football tournament in the world, and every player wants to feature there. A good number of the players in the team now have not been there, and the few of us that have been there wanted to experience it again. We just want the NFF to help us get enough fans into the Abuja Stadium for the second leg. We will go to Ghana and dig our feet and ensure we get a result. We must admit that Ghana also wants to qualify and they have a strong team. The return leg will be crucial and we are ready for the battle, but we want our fans to be in there cheering us on.”

Technical Adviser Augustine Eguavoen had this to say, “It is always an honour to serve the country. I was impressed with the high level of discipline and commitment of the players at the AFCON in Cameroon, and I feel privileged to lead the group. We have two tough games against Ghana next month but I am not too worried because we have a squad that knows it is a mountain that we have to climb. We have a good headache to deal with – which is a surplus of good players. I want to thank the government and the NFF for all the support during the AFCON; we will need even greater support for the World Cup play-off.”

Deputy Captain William Troost-Ekong added that the players are aware of the big task ahead and only want the government to ensure that the pitch of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja is in “pristine condition” for the return leg encounter against the Black Stars. “We loved the pitch of the stadium in Garoua and it helped us play some good football. We would be delighted if the Abuja Stadium is in similar condition for the second leg.”

We all know about the history of the rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana in football and this is one fixture that we must not lose”.

“We know that dogged spirit is there in you, and we also want you to see yourself as one big family. We have confidence in you that you can do it and will give you all the support. Coaches Eguavoen and Amuneke have smooth access to the NFF President and he will always be ready to provide what you need. As for the pitch of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, we have experts working there all the time and I assure you it will be in perfect condition for the match.”

The management of Shooting Stars Sports Club, 3SC, of Ibadan, wishes to call on the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to allow justice and fairness prevail in its final decision making on the ongoing debate on how to end the 2019/20 season.

In a statement by the club’s Media Officer, Tosin Omojola, the management of rejected the resolution by clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, calling for the cancelation of the entire season including that of the Nigeria National League, NNL, and other leagues.

“To put the record straight, we state unequivocally, that 3SC as a club, has no business dabbling into the issues of the NPFL, which is a separate league on its own”, the statement adds.

It notes that 3SC has no issue with NPFL clubs’ decision to end the season, using the Point Per Game (PPG) format to determine who wins the league and which teams pick continental tickets, however, the concern is centered on the resolution of the League Management Company or NPFL to call for the cancelation of the 2019/20 season of the NNL.

“We wish to state categorically here that, since the NNL is not an appendage of the NPFL, it has no right whatsoever to take any decision on the running of the NNL, therefore, approving the proposal of the NPFL by the NFF, is unreasonable, disrespectful and infringing on the right of clubs in the NNL”.

The statement further explains that the NFF should know, that giving its nod to the proposal, portends great danger for the Nigerian league, considering the fact that NNL clubs are also part of the league and therefore, deserved to be carried along in decision making as stakeholders.

The club regards the proposal of canceling the season as inhuman, unfair and high level wickedness as it showed that those behind it are less concerned about the 42 clubs participating in the NNL.

“For instance, 3SC as a club, started preparing for the 2019/20 season since a year ago and you will recall that the season did not start until the tail end of October”.

The release says in preparing for the season, human efforts and huge resources were involved and canceling the season, will amount to waste of human efforts and financial resources, pumped in by the financier of the club the Oyo State Government.

“We wonder why and how the risk of embarking on rigours and tortuous journeys to different parts of the country, with attendant insecurity in some places, coupled with taxpayers money spent on the club by its financier, were not considered by the apostles of NNL cancelation”.

The management points out that the money spent on securing the services of players from other clubs, securing licenses through the registration of the players, as well as huge money spent on officials, staff and other logistics for the season could not go down the drain.

Shooting stars management therefore opines that if the NFF eventually approves or accepts the use of PPG in the NPFL, same can be applied in the NNL, a playoff of the two top teams in each group of the NNL can be organized to determine the four clubs that will be promoted to the NPFL and since the NPFL clubs have agreed that no team will be relegated, then there could be a 24 team format just like in the 2017/18 season.

The club while appealing to the NFF to toe the path of honour, honesty and transparency in taking a decision that would be acceptable to every stakeholder in the Nigerian league, which of course include clubs in the NPFL, NNL, NLO and the NWPL for the good of the game and for the sake of fair play, which is the slogan of the world football governing body, FIFA, stresses the need for the Sport Ministry and other relevant bodies concerned to allow justice and fairness to be the order of the day in order to save the nation’s football.

News Analysis

On February 22, 2020, a Nigerian footballer who played for Remo Stars Football Club, Kazeem Tiamiyu also known as Kaka, bade the world farewell in a very controversial manner in Sagamu, Ogun State.

The deceased who was also the assistant captain of Remo Stars was said to be driving in the company of one of his teammates, Sanni Abubakar.

According to the report, he was said to have been stopped by some officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

Report says one of the SARS officers had allegedly labelled Tiamiyu a cyber-fraudster, popularly known as yahoo boy and decided to take him to a police station close by.

Tiamiyu was said to have identified himself as a player of Remo Stars, however, this fell on the deaf ears of the SARS officers.

In a statement by the media officer of Remo Stars FC, one of the SARS officers was alleged to have pushed Tiamiyu out of the vehicle that was conveying him to the station and in the process, he was knocked down by a vehicle.

The young star was subsequently confirmed dead on arrival when he was rushed to a nearby private hospital.

The death of Kazeem Tiamiyu was just few of extrajudicial killings of innocent Nigerians by personnel of both the nation’s security agencies.

In October 2016, a player of Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan, Joseph Izu was killed by soldiers of Joint Miltary Task Force in Okaki, Ahoada, Rivers State.

It is so cruel that a defenceless player like Tiamiyu who had gone to meet his manager a day before the incident ahead of his football trials coming up in Sweden would just be killed like a fly.

Instead of being remorseful and sympathetic, Nigeria Police, Ogun State Command, issued a statement which generated a public outcry on the situation that led to Kaka’s death which of course contradicted the position of Remo Stars FC.

A protest was staged on the police reaction by some youths in Sagamu where some people were feared dead.

In the light of this, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu disbanded the Zonal Intervention Squad, ZIS, in Ogun State, while the officers involved was been arrested for being on illegal duty, and for failure to obtain clearance from the formation in Sagamu before the operation.

The killing of Tiamiyu should not be swept under the carpet as it was in the case of Joseph Izu where hasty investigation exonerated the person that killed him.

The Inspector General of Police should rise to the calls to reform the Nigeria Police to make them more people-friendly and as well conform to international standard in the discharge of their duties.

No matter the pressure, Nigeria Police must protect the people and not kill them.

The hierarchy of the police must admit its shortcomings and restore sanity into the force, thereby preventing such provocative cases in the future.

Furthermore, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun must live to his words that such ugly incident would not occur again in the state and that the case would be thoroughly investigated.

The governor should equally consider immortalising the footballer by naming a sports institution or facility after him.

The governor, during a visit to the parents of the dead footballer, had promised to use all instruments of government to unearth the circumstances surrounding the death of Tiamiyu.

The management of Remo Stars FC should equally ensure that all entitlements accrued to Kazeem Tiamiyu are paid to his family as soon as possible, while the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, should equally come up with an award in honour of the late assistant captain of Remo Stars FC for his contribution to the development of football in Nigeria.

Nigerians are patiently waiting to see that not only is justice served but also seen that it has been served.
