The Head Coach of Gateway United Football Club Festus Allen has assured fans that the team will be back stronger after a goalless draw against visiting Godswill Akpabio United FC in a second tier Nigeria National League NNL 2024/2025 opener played at Gateway International Stadium, Ilaro.

Coach Allen in a post-match interview, promised to correct lapses noticed in the match that saw the inability of the home- side to convert several scoring chances created during the encounter.

Gateway United will look to build on their performance as they prepare for the next fixture away against Osun United on Saturday 14th December, 2024.

It was a massive home victory for Gateway United Football Club of Ogun State following an impressive four-nil win over visiting Warri Wolves in week 12 of the Nigeria National League, NNL, encounter.

The four goals were scored in the second half of the game played at the MKO International Stadium, Kuto Abeokuta after both teams failed to convert the chances created in the first 45 minutes.

Odusina Sunkanmi fired Gateway United into the lead with a stunning finish in the 50th minute of the game after the diminutive forward connected with a cross at the back post.

Babatunde Taofeek got the second for the home team in the 55th minute of the encounter before Babatunde Damilare and Wasiu Falolu increased the tally to three and four goals in the 71st and 78th minutes of the game.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria after the game, Coach Samson Omiponle who attributed the victory to players’ dedication and hard work commended the management and fans for their support for the team.

Coach Omiponle promised to approach the next game away to Tradesafe football team with a renewed vigour and winning mentality.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has trained over two hundred match commissioners ahead of the 2023/24 Nigeria National League, NNL, Nationwide League One, NLO, and Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL, season.

The training held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, had participants from the 18 southern states of the country.

Declaring the event open, the Chairman, NFF Match Commissioners Committee, Alhaji Babagana Kalli asserted that the football body would not condone any form of negligence from the match commissioners.

Alhaji Babagana who emphasized the importance of ensuring that match commissioners fulfill their roles effectively, expressed the committee’s commitment to preventing any laxity in their performance, citing past instances that have hindered their operations.

He stressed the need for each match commissioner to maintain consciousness regarding their responsibilities and execute their assignments diligently. 

Alhaji Kalli noted that the committee was prepared to impose sanctions on any commissioners found negligent in their duties.

The NFF executive member, who is also the Chairman, Ogun State Football Association, Alhaji Ganiu Majekodunmi, expressed his confidence that the knowledge and insights gained from the seminar would significantly impact the upcoming football season.

Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan, 3SC, have gained promotion from the Nigeria National League, NNL, to the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL.

The Oluyole warriors secured one of the four tickets of the elite league after defeating Ekiti United by six goals to nothing at the ongoing NNL Super Eight tournament ongoing in Enugu state.

The Edith Agoye boys had opened their campaign at the tournament with a two goals to one victory over Bendel Insurance and played a one goal apiece draw in their second game against Remo Stars.

With this result, Shooting Stars finished with seven points from three matches to qualify for the semifinal of the NNL Super Eight in addition to clinching the NPFL Ticket.

Remo Stars and Bendel Insurance will jostle for the fourth NPFL ticket.

Niger Tornadoes and Gombe United have earlier clinched the first two NPFL Tickets.

Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan was relegated to the lower division from NPFL in 2017.

Gateway United football club of Ogun have continued their impressive run in the Nigeria National League following their two nil win over Apex Krane FC from Agbor, Delta state in a week four encounter.


Goals from Haliru Salifu and in each half of the encounter played at the MKO international stadium, Kuto Abeokuta  gave the Akeem Busari led team the maximum three points at stake.


The home team dominated possession from the blast of the whistle with Seyi Okeowo and Odusina Sunkanmi disturbing the defence line of the visitor.
Haruna Salifu however got the opening goal in the 28th minute of the game when he tucked home Seyi Okeowo’s well weighted in free kick from the left.


The visitor failed to draw level in the 37th minute when the referee adjudged a handball in the area to give the away team a penalty. 
Ibukun Araromi however dived to his right to make a big save as the score line remained 1-0 to the host. 


Aderemi Yusuf got the second goal for Gateway United in the second half of the game to put match beyond the visitor.


Speaking after the match, Coach Akeem Busari said the victory was well deserved considering the fact that team is still work in progress.


On his part, Coach Tosan Bob-Blankson of Apex Krane said inability of the player to convert the penalty awarded in the first half destabilized the team.

Up next for the Hakeem Busari led team would be an Ogun State Derby when they face Remo Stars in Ikenne in an NNL match day  5 meeting.

Ahead of the January 16th kick-off date of the Nigeria National League, NNL, players and technical team of Gateway United FC have resumed preparation for the forthcoming season after a two-week festive break.

Addressing the players on the training pitch of the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, the Team Manager, Mr Dare Osunsanya implored the players to justify the confidence reposed in them.

Mr Dare restated the government’s determination to support the players with all they required to enable them to succeed in the league.

Also, the Acting General Manager, Mr Niyi Soleye harped on dedication, discipline and commitment as ingredients for success in the forthcoming season. Olusegun Folarin

The prolonged stay of Gateway United football club of Ogun state in the Nigeria National League, NNL, has continued to be a source of concern to sports administrators and fans in the state.

Those who spoke with Radio Nigeria said there was the need for state government to convene a sports summit to address the myriads of challenges affecting the club.

Ahead of the 2020/2021 Season of the Nigeria National League, NNL, and in a renewed effort to ensure that lives of players and officials are adequately protected, the NNL has reeled out strong medical dictates to safeguard the fitness of the dramatis personnel on and off the pitch of play.

According to NNL Chief Operating Officer, Mr Emmanuel Adesanya, this has become imperative considering recent incidences of death recorded on the field of play and the prevailing COVID-19 global pandemic.

“The Medical conditions are very clear in the rule books governing Association Football, it is a crusade that will ensure adequate medical facilities are provided at all times by clubs in our League” he said.

Mr Adesanya reiterated the provisions of the NNL rule book on the need for every club to have medical professionals which should comprise: A medical Doctor, Nurse, Physiotherapist and a masseur for their matches.

2. Clubs are to carry out medical examination on all contracted players and coaches and have medical records of which shall be made available for inspection by authorized representatives of the league body.

3. Making available players medical record to other clubs during transfer and negotiation of a player by the club holding such a player.

4. Clubs are to maintain a medical insurance scheme approved by the NNL.

5. Compulsory first aid medical services at every match venue, with clubs and their State Football Associations providing stretchers and ambulances well equipped with basic medical gadgets.

6. Clubs will present certificate of medical fitness of all players and coaching cabinet, such certificate must be endorsed by a doctor with his contact details from a reputable and designated government-owned medical centre in their state.

It is worthy to note that the NNL is working to synergize with reputable government approved medical centre to ensure absolute compliance by the clubs.

Mr. Adesanya however, warned that non-compliance by clubs will not be treated kids gloves.

The Nigeria National League, NNL, which is expected to resume tomorrow has been postponed indefinitely.

According to a statement by the Chief Operating Officer of the NNL, Lawrence Katken, the postponement was as a result of the harsh conditions confronting the nation’s football. 

The statement adds that efforts would be intensified to ensure the league resumes soonest.

The NNL has been on break since last December, after week five matches were played, and was expected to resume on January 10 before it was later postponed.
