The Osun State chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE has directed its members to resume work on 5th January 2026, ending an 11-month strike across the state.

Merry Christmas Greetings from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan

‎According to a statement made available to newsmen by the union’s President, Dr Nathaniel Ogungbangbe, NULGE said the decision followed a series of Security Council meetings to deliberate on guarantees for the safe resumption of work at the Councils.

Dr. Ogungbangbe demanded the deployment of adequate security personnel to all local government secretariats ahead of the planned resumption.

The Statement reads, “As you are aware, our members were asked to withdraw their services and embark on a sit-at-home action following the volatile security situation arising from the leadership tussle and rival political friction between PDP and APC over the control of Local Government Secretariats in Osun State. To safeguard the lives of our members, we had no choice but to vacate these premises.

‎“However, following internal deliberations, the union has resolved that its members shall resume work on Monday, 5th January, 2026.” It states further.

Dr. Ogungbangbe stressed that local government employees must not be exposed to security threats, insisting that civil servants are law-abiding citizens who deserve full protection to carry out their duties without fear.

The Osun NULGE President maintained that the councils could function without elected chairmen, noting that the Head of Local Administration, alongside the directors of administration and finance, could effectively run the councils in line with the Osun State Local Government Accounts Administration Law, 2025.

‎Recalled, activities at local government secretariats across Osun had been grounded since February 17, when the union directed its members to withdraw their services.

‎NULGE had explained that the strike was to prevent its members from becoming victims of a power struggle involving chairmen elected during the October 15, 2022 local government elections conducted under the administration of former governor Adegboyega Oyetola and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party over control of the councils.

Local government workers in Osun State have been urged to resume for official activities in their councils on Monday, October 6, 2025.

The State Coordinator of Association of Concerned Group under the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Mr Adedayo Adekunle made the call while addressing newsmen in Osogbo.

Mr. Adekunle, who said the call became imperative to avoid degradation or job loss, described it as uncivilized for a union leader to unilaterally call for a strike for over seven months with the excuse of insecurity.

“It is uncivilized for a union leader to resolve unilaterally to call a strike which has lasted for over seven (7) months; enough is enough. The excuse of insecurity is no longer tenable; no insecurity anywhere.”

While maintaining that workers are tired of staying at home, the coordinator of the Concerned Group stressed that the legal tussle between the two stakeholders should not deter them from performing their primary assignment.

“We hereby call on all patriotic and law abiding local government workers to resume work without delay, and information at our disposal is that staff auditing has been slated for next week to ascertain the actual number of staff in the office.”

Mr. Adekunle explained that the group is apolitical and called on all security apparatus to be at alert at the councils’ secretariats.

He added that the concerned workers would be working with the Chairmen and Councillors elected under the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Meanwhile, the State NULGE President, Dr. Kehinde Ogungbangbe in a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. David Owoeye, said the Union has not directed its members to resume work.

‎Dr. Ogungbangbe maintained that the Union would continue to defend the interest of its members.

“Myself, as President of NULGE and my other Executive members, are dissociating our members from all the meetings going on with politicians in Osun State, we only pray for a successful conduct of peaceful and credible elections in Nigeria”.

The NULGE National President flanked by State Presidents from the Southwest zone, said the root of insecurity and other predicaments bedeviling the country could be traced to the mismanagement of the local government system over the years by many state governors.

While calling for local government autonomy, Comrade Ambali who was in Akure for social event, urged the National Assembly and state houses of assembly to grant same in the ongoing constitution review.

The National President charged local government chairmen nationwide under ALGON, to have the courage to challenge in court illegal collection of motor park and signage fees by the state governments.

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), has expressed support for the Southwest Governors over the take-off of Amotekun Corps to tackle insecurity in the geopolitical zone.

This is just as the union disowned its retired Deputy National Secretary, Comrade Rasaki Lawal over its alleged activities to create unnecessary leadership crisis.

This formed part of the decisions reached at the meeting of the Southwest leaders of NULGE held in Akure, the Ondo State capital and attended by all the six State Presidents in the zone.

In a Communiqué signed by the leaders, the zone explained that despite the hands of brotherhood extended to Rasaq Lawal, he never rescinded on his anti-union actions of allegedly creating rancour within the rank and file of NULGE throughout the country in general and the Southwest zone in particular.

The Southwest leaders therefore, enjoined all NULGE members, state government, agencies, parastatals and law enforcement agencies to disregard any publication and memos from him or his so called illegal caretaker committee.

The Southwest Zone leaders of the union pledged their unalloyed support and corporation to the leadership under the National President, Comrade Ibrahim Kahleel.
