The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero has called for synergy among Traditional Rulers in Nigeria to foster national peace, unity and development.

Alhaji Ado-Bayero made the call when he led officials of the Kano Emirate Council, to the Ijebu-Ode palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, to pay homage and felicitate with the monarch on his ninetieth birthday and sixty-fourth coronation anniversary.

The Emir, who described the traditional institution as the closest form of administration to the people and a platform for building bridges to connect different parts of the country, urged the monarchs to continue to mobilize support for ensuring good governance.

“He is a royal father with a difference and whose reign has no doubt been a blessing not only to Ijebu land but Nigeria as a whole. Certainly, Kano and Ijebuland share the same similarities in terms of the people being business-oriented. Both Kano and Ijebu are known for commerce and our relationships are dated back in the years”, Alhaji Ado-Bayero stated.

“When I became the emir of kano about 4 years ago, I went round virtually all the states of the federation . This visit is a continuation of what have been doing but this is very special, I Hope my visit will continue to breach the gap . Am here in May and I hope to be back in August”, the Kano Monarch remarked.

Alhaji Ado-Bayero congratulated the Awujale on his birthday and coronation Anniversaries, describing the nonagenerian as a father that many traditional rulers in the Country would continue to tap from his wealth of experience.

In a remark, the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona acknowledged that the late father of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Ado-Bayero was a bossom friend and applauded the visitors, while renewing his commitment to protecting and providing guidance to the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Mr Ganiyu Hamzat who affirmed the contributions of the Awujale to the growth of the state traditional council, the education sector and other fields of endeavor, also prayed God to grant him more grace on the throne.

Members of the Ijebu traditional council including the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo, Oba Lawrence Adebayo, the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba AbdulRasaq Adenugba, Fuji Maestro and the Olori Omo-Oba Akile-Ijebu, Wasiu Ayinde, the Onigegewura of Ijebuland, Chief Tunde Oladunjoye, as well as the former Senator representing Ogun Central, Dr Lanre Tejuosho witnessed the ceremony.

President Bola Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON), on the Awujale and Paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, for his immeasurable and invaluable contributions to national development.

The ceremony also featured the inauguration of Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.

The President also announced that the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos has been directed to take over the management of Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance which the royal father bequeathed to the university.

He described Awujale as an extraordinary royal father and hero of Nigeria democracy, who is adored all over the country for his sincerity of purpose and courage in the face of any adversity threatening national development.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has signed into law a bill regulating Selection, installation and burial rites of traditional rulers in the state.

Signing the Bill at the palace of Awujale of Ijebuland in Ijebu Ode, Governor Abiodun said the step became imperative towards protecting fundamental rights of traditional rulers and giving them the opportunity to be buried according to their religions or beliefs.

Governor Abiodun commended the members of the state House of Assembly for ensuring that the bill went through rigorous exercise as it was subjected to public hearings.

The Governor gave an assurance that his administration would continue to collaborate with traditional rulers for overall development at the grassroots.

In a remark, Speaker of the state house of Assembly, Mr Olakunle Oluomo said the bill passed through the toughest proceedings in the history of the House as it generated a lot of issues from members of the public, adding that the lawmakers had done their bit to ensure that the bill was in consonant with the nation’s constitution.

Also, Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who was the Chairman of Ogun State Council of Obas when the bill was initiated, said it was a great achievement for people as the bill attracted a lot of attention from Christians and Muslims in the state.

Nigerian researchers have been encouraged to invest research grants in valuable works that will benefit the nation and stand the test of time rather than divert the resources for personal use.

A don with University of Edinburgh, Dr. Akin Iwilade gave the advise at a workshop for researchers on proposal writing for research grants held at the Senate building of Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago- Iwoye, Ogun state.
The workshop organised by the Oba Sikiru Adetona professorial chair in good governance of the institution had in attendance academic staff and representatives of the institution’s management.

According to Dr. Akin Iwilade, research grants are not meant to enrich the researchers noting that many research works failed to win grants due to inflated budgets.He explained that researchers must understand the dynamics involved in accessing international grants which include good proposals build around team work, good profile, sincere budgeting and meeting the aspirations of the funders.

Dr. Iwilade who expressed delight on the exploits of researchers from Nigeria amongst their contemporaries seeking grants from funders in the United Kingdom advised Nigeria researchers not to rest on their oars.

The Vice Chancellor, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Professor Ganiyu Olatunde represented by the deputy vice Chancellor Academic, Professor Deji Agboola said capacity building for staff of the institution was one of the focus of the university administration noting that the school expect its staff to win up to fifty grants in the next twelve months with the training.

The Chairman, board of trustees of Oba Sikiru Adetona professorial chair, Professor Akinsola Agagu while speaking said their mission was to improve on good governance in the country through açcess and judicious use of international grants.

The workshop on proposal writing for research grants is expected to dovetail to the faculties and the departments at the University.
