People’s Democratic Party PDP in Ogun State had produced two Governorship candidates from two factional primaries held in Abeokuta ahead of the 2023 election.

The first factional primary held at the Iwe Iroyin Press Center in Abeokuta produced the former spokesperson of Atiku for president campaign team, Mr. Segun Showunmi as the candidate while the second primary held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, OOPL, produced former member of House of Representatives, Chief Ladi Adebutu.

The result of at the Press Centre revealed that Mr. Showunmi was elected candidate with 554 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mr. Ladi Lawal who scored 30 votes, while Chief Ladi Adebutu polled 15 votes.

Three Governorship aspirants battling for the PDP ticket in the state were Adebutu , Showunmi and an ex-banker, Jimi Lawal.

The result at the OOPL PDP Primary showed that Chief Ladi Adebutu won the contest with 714 votes out of the 715 accredited voters with one void vote stating that other aspirants had no vote.h

Chairman of the electoral committee that conducted the primary at the Primary producing Mr. Segun Showunmi as the candidate, Mr. Abayomi Daniel, said a total number of 778 delegates were accredited, 702 votes were cast while three votes were voided.

Also, Chief Ladi Adebutu while speaking shortly after the election called for support from stakeholders in ensuring the party defeats APC in the next Governorship election.

School children in Ogun State have participated in the ninth edition of the Children’s Creative Station Workshop put together by the National Troupe of Nigeria to further celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the country. 

The event held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta featured a cast of more than 50 children taking part in the dance, music and command performance of a stage play titled “The Rejected Blessing”

Correspondent Wale Oluokun reports that the performance was witnessed by the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Dr Liman Mansur, represented by the Zonal Director, Ibadan National station, Mrs Bolatito Joseph.

It was an evening of entertainment at the main hall of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library where the children treated the audience to cultural dance, music and drama.

The stage drama, The Rejected Blessing, focused on the Nigerian landscape, diverse cultures and values as well as historical facts, traditional practices and artistic manifestations weaved around the story of twins before the colonial era.

The children’s drama explained how the twins that were hitherto rejected by a kingdom became the saving grace for the ailing Eze of the town. 

The discovery that the twins that saved the Eze remained within the territory while the people engaged in the fruitless long search for them was the high point of the story written and directed by Pamela Idoka of the National Troupe of Nigeria.

Addressing the gathering, the artistic director of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Mallam Ahmed Ahmed explained that the Children’s Creative Station Workshop was being taken across the country to strengthen national unity and to further expose the various Nigeria cultures to all the nationalities.

He called on the Ogun State government to partner the troupe towards maximizing the benefits to the children.

General Manager of the National Theatre, Professor Sunny Ododo while speaking said there were a lot of talents among the children and urged the national troupe to experiment with engaging the children as both the cast and crew of the performances. 

Representative of the Ogun State governor at the play and commissioner for Arts and culture Dr Toyin Taiwo, commended the children’s display stating that the Ogun State government would continue to support the cultural industry.

The theatre performance by the national troupe was rounded off with the presentation of certificates to the children by dignitaries at the event, including the Director-General of FRCN, Dr Liman Mansur who was represented by the Zonal Director, FRCN Ibadan National Station, Mrs Bolatito Joseph.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for a national policy on prevention and eradication of cervical cancer in Nigeria.

The former president made the call at his Penthouse of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, OOPL, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, shortly after he was decorated as the presidential ambassador by the Cervical Cancer-Free Nigeria led by Senator Lanre Tejuoso.

Chief Obasanjo stated that both the Federal and State governments must deploy all available resources to fight cervical cancer as they had fought polio, COVID-19 and other diseases.

He urged the Federal government to invest in national-scale procurement and distribution of HPV vaccine to fight Human PapillomaVirus HPV the virus responsible for cervical cancer.

Chief Obasanjo said the HPV vaccine must be available for every Nigeria girl child to prevent the spread of cervical cancer in the country.

In a remarks, Senator Lanre Tejuoso who was the Chairman of the eighth Senate Committee on Health, disclosed that eight thousand women die yearly of Cervical cancer noting that the NGO rallied the former president’s support to the lead the cervical cancer advocacy in Nigeria and at the global scene.

In the team that decorated the former president are the Commissioners for Health in Ogun and Lagos States, Dr Tomi Coker and Prof Akin  Abayomi as well as the President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Mr. Abimbola Ogunbanjo who vowed to mobilise support of private sector in the fight against the virus.

The body also include Global Oncology (GO), a  non-profit foundation and the Legislative Initiative for Sustainable Development LISDEL a grassroots initiative to eliminate cervical cancer in Nigeria.

The Management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State has sent some of its workers on temporary break following the effect of the Covid-19 on the business.

According to letter issued by the management of the library and signed by Head of Human Resources, Administration and Procurement, Mrs Olanike Ogunleye the library claimed that the organisation was overwhelmed by the adverse effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The library management said it regrets to inform the workers that their employment will be put on hold till further notice from thirty-first of May, 2020.

The Managing Director of the library, Mr Vitalise Ortese, in a remark, said the decision was informed by the reality of the period.

He said the library did not sack the workers noting that it was clearly stated in their letter that it was temporary cessation.
