Ondo State Government with support of West Minister Foundation for Democracy is putting modalities in place to open a register and bill boards to publish names of Sexual and Gender Based Violence offenders in the state. 

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir Charles Titiloye stated this in Akure during a conversation on deepening the implementation of the VAPP Law in Ondo state to enhance the capacity of state institution for effective implementation of the laws to promote inclusion, Gender Equality and Reverse GBV.

Sir Titiloye said that to further achieve quick justice system,the police should  use the VAPP Law to charge GBV cases instead of the criminal code which have  linen punishment compared to VAPP law which is highly punitive

The Attorney General harped on the imperative of coordination and documentation for effective implementation of the laws, saying the judiciary was always ready to ensure quick justice delivery.

Also speaking, a Judge of the High Court, Justice Bankole Akinwumi said the judiciary was committed to promoting law that would increase inclusion and that make society safe for women and children.

Earlier, the Country Director, Westminster Foundation for Democracy, Mr Adebowale Olorunmola, empahsised the need  for  gender budgeting through  lobbying State Assembly to release funding at different stages for the VAPP Law.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser on Gender to the Governor, Mrs Olamide Falana emphasized the need for every ministries and agencies to work together to raise awareness and concern in rural communities in order to carry everyone along. 

On the State Sexual Referral Centre, Mrs Falana said the state government was working assiduously to ensure quick commencement of the centre to serve as safe haven for GBV victims.

Also, the Senior Special Adviser to the Ondo State Governor Wife, Mrs Temitope Daniyan, said there was the need for the society to change its perception and stereotypes against women and children, considering their vulnerability when it comes to gender-based violence .

,The Director of Legal Service, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Stella Adegoke said  Sexual Assault offenders had been prosecuted through the VAPP law saying stakeholders should work together to ensure that no SGBV offenders are spared in the state .

Others who spoke called for synergy between stakeholders to provide both legal, psycho-social support to GBV victims for prompt justice.

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has extended the enforcement of compulsory installation of Close Circuit Television, CCTV, devices in all public places in the state to September 1, 2022.

The extension is sequel to appeals from churches, mosques and other public centres to enable them put in place necessary measures as contained in the State Executive Order.

Governor Akeredolu signed an Executive Order on June 22, 2022 mandating owners, occupiers, managers and operators of public/private institutions within Ondo State to install, use and maintain CCTV devices and other secret cameras to monitor and keep surveillance on the daily activities in their premises.

According to a release from the governor’s chief press secretary , Richard Olatunde, with one month extension, all security agencies in the state shall enforce the Executive Order as from September 1, 2022 .

Violators shall be prosecuted in accordance with Section 203 of the Criminal Code (Cap. 37) Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria.

Governor Akeredolu reiterated his administration’s commitment to the security of lives and property of the people, describing it as a priority.

In Ondo State, the Nigerian flags are to fly at half-mast for seven days in honour of the victims of yesterday’s terror attack in Owo.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in a news release directed all public buildings, facilities, and official residences to comply from today, Monday, June 6, to Sunday, June 12, 2022.

The Governor maintained that the attack on innocent worshipers at St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo was a deliberate and calculated assault on the people of the state.

He, however, said that the government would not be deterred in responding appropriately to the dastardly act, describing it as a collective loss to the state.

Ondo State Government has received seventy three thousand, five hundred and seventy doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines from the Federal Government.

The Executive Secretary of the board, Dr Francis Akanbiemu confirmed this to Positive FM in Akure

Dr Akanbiemu said the vaccine was delivered yesterday evening through the Akure Airport and was received by officials of the Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Board on behalf of the state government.

He noted that the vaccination would be launched today by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu where he is expected alongside his deputy, Mr Lucky Ayedatiwa to receive shots of the vaccine.

Dr Akanbiemu hinted that the vaccination would commence for residents in designated facilities on Friday.

He urged the people of the state to embrace the vaccine to reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19. 

Last week, Nigeria took delivery of about four million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines as part of an overall 16 million doses planned to be delivered to the country in batches over the next few months.

The Ondo State Executive Council has approved the selection of Prince Adeleke Adegbite-Adedoyin as the new Owa-Ale of Ikare Akoko in Akoko North East local government area.

Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held in Akure and presided over by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the State Commissioner for Information, Donald Ojogo and his counterpart from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mrs Lola Fagbemi, said the selection process of Prince Adeleke Adedoyin was ratified in line with Ikare tradition and law of the state.

Mrs Fagbemi noted that the only ruling House of Owa-Ale unanimously presented Prince Adeleke to the kingmaker for government’s approval.

Oba Adeleke Adedoyin, a United Kingdom trained legal practitioner, was born over forty years ago and he is the son of the immediate past Owa-Ale, late Oba Kolapo Adegbite-Adedoyin who joined his ancestors in September last year.

When crowned, Prince Adeleke Adegbite-Adedoyin will be the 18th Owa-Ale of Ikare-akoko.

The Ondo State Government is to embark on a ten day campaign against yellow fever in Eleven Local Government Areas of the State. 

During the programme which will run from 20th to 29th of November 2020, children from nine months to adults of up to forty four years old will be vaccinated against yellow fever. 

The local government areas are, Akure South, Ifedore, Idanre, Ondo East, Ondo west and Ile Oluji/Okeigbo. 

Others are Odigbo, okitipupa, Irele, Ese-odo and Ilaje local governments 

The incidence manager for yellow fever, Dr. Victor Akinfesoye, announced this in Akure during a stakeholders’ meeting on yellow fever campaign. 

Dr. Adefesoye urged people within the age bracket for the vaccination to make themselves available while mothers should also present their children for the exercise. 

The medical expert noted that an outbreak of yellow fever had been recorded in Delta state, hence the need for inter-state transmission. 

Also speaking, the Director, Community Health Services and Education, Ondo State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Samuel Abiona had encouraged Residents to seize the opportunity of the vaccination to prevent themselves against the disease which he said had no cure yet. 

Goodwill messages from W.H.O and UNICEF also preached massive participation in the exercise for a healthy society. 

The sensitization meeting was attended by Medical group, women group, civil society organisations school owners and other stakeholders who promised to ensure the success of the yellow fever campaign.
