Oyo State Government has distributed palliatives to the first set of Lebanese returnees in the state.

On the occasion, Special Adviser on Diaspora to the State Governor, Bolanle Sarumi-Aliyu said the exercise would be conducted in batches.

The returnees, who are Oyo State female indigenes in their middle ages, were stranded in Lebanon in the process of seeking greener pastures.

Speaking on the effort of Oyo State Government at ensuring the welfare of all its citizens, including those in the Diaspora, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Diaspora matters, Mrs Sarumi Aliyu noted that about forty-eight stranded Oyo indigenes had been repatriated in the last few months.

Mrs Sarumi-Aliyu, while explaining that the government had put mechanisms in place to empower the returnees, hinted that the palliative was to make life easier for the ladies pending the time when a concrete empowerment would be effected.

Mrs Sarumi-Aliyu also gave assurance that the state government was ready to penalize human traffickers.

She added that plan was underway to evacuate another set of fifty stranded Oyo indigenes from Lebanon.

Some of the returnees, who described their experience in the foreign land as harrowing, appreciated the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde for prioritizing their needs.

Reacting, President, Journalists International Forum for Migration, JIFORM, Mr. Abayomi Ajibola commended Oyo State for the stride in ensuring better life for Nigerians in Diaspora, calling on other state governments to emulate the good gesture.

He described as unfortunate, a situation where stranded Nigerians in Diaspora were neglected by their state governments.

In recent time, both Federal and State governments had been evacuating stranded Nigerians across the globe.

Oyo State Government has held stakeholders’ consultative meeting on the year 2021 budget with a call on relevant people to duly contribute to the budgeting process in the state to enhance people-oriented development across the state.

The consultative meeting was held at the International Conference Center, University of Ibadan.

Addressing the participants, Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde said the forum was part of the state government’s efforts to ensure wide consultations on the state’s 2021 Budget.

Governor Makinde expressed his determination to pursue and implement policies that would satisfy the yearnings of the people of the state in the 2020 and 2021 budgets.

Governor Makinde said government was able to make appreciable remark on the 2020 budget despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Barrister Adeniyi Farinto stated that the present government in Oyo State would imbibe the principles of equity and participatory approach in the forthcoming budget.

Representative of civil society groups, pressure groups, local government and advocacy groups also reeled out their various concerns and expectations with an appeal to the state government to institutionalize the budgeting process

The Oyo Central and Oyo North session of the town hall meeting on the 2021 budget will also hold .

Education

Oyo State government has announced September 21, 2020 as the beginning of the 2020/2021 academic session for primary and secondary schools in the state.

A statement by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, indicated that the first term of the new academic calendar will run between September 21 and December 18, 2020.

The statement added that the second term of the academic session is expected to run from January 11 to April 9, 2021, while the third term will run between May 3 and July 30, 2021.

The commissioner said: “The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology enjoins all stakeholders and members of the public to take note of the details of the academic calendar.”

It will be recalled that the new calendar was approved on July 21 at a meeting of the State Executive Council, to guide resumption of schools and other associated educational activities in the state amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected educational activities around the world.

Property on a hectare of land at Abatakan area of Ojoo is currently being cleared by Oyo state government.

Our correspondent who was at the scene of the demolition report that the clearing operation did not go down well with the families of Alhaji Qadri Olateju, who claimed ownership of the land.


In an interview, the daughters of late Alhaji Qadri, Mrs Ramat Olateju, Rahman Adam, Ibrahim Mariam who were emotional on the development said the property was a subject of litigation in the law court, saying the certificate of occupancy duly signed by Oyo state government is in their possession



Also speaking, the family spokesman, who is also a human right activist in Oyo, Mr Muftau Zakariyah said the similar landed property was demolished by Oyo state government at Akinyele saying prior notice was given the family before embarking on the demolition

Radio Nigeria also reports that the demolition had prompted shop owners on the land to remove their temporary shops.


Scavengers also use the opportunity to pick wastes on the site
though security personnel were on ground, and as at the time of filing this report, no officials of the state ministry of housing were noticed.

Oyo State Government has revealed that it may likely impose travel restrictions at the state’s entry points, as part of measures for containing the Coronavirus pandemic in the state.

The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), Dr. Akin Fagbemi while featuring on a radio station in Ibadan.

The Executive Chairman said, the state government would only allow essential travels into the state, which would be subjected to thorough health checks.

Dr Fagbemi said OYRTMA has put efforts in place to closely monitor the state’s borders.

He called on transport companies, transport unions and terminal operators to keep a travel manifest for inbound and outbound passengers, especially verified phone numbers.

Dr. Fagbemi equally commended media houses in the state on their awareness and sensitization efforts, but called for intensified jingles aimed at sensitizing residents on the scourge of the virus and how to curb its spread.

Oyo state government has approved free medical services to be conducted throughout the 33 local government areas of the state and the 35 LCDAs.

This is part of the resolutions reached at the end of the first executive meeting in the year 2020.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bashir Bello said the free medical outreach would also cover surgical operations.

The commissioner noted that over fifty four million naira has been approved for the intervention programme.
