One of the greatest things in life is taking time to appreciate people, be it as an individual, family or organisation, for the impact such people have made.

So it was with the News Department of Radio Nigeria, Ibadan, when it gathered on Thursday at Studio One of the Broadcasting House to recognise and thank some people who had made significant contributions to the department.

The occasion was the department’s annual appreciation day, which brought together dignitaries from all walks of life including retired and serving members of staff of the department.

Special recognition was accorded to general managers and overseers of Premier FM, Ibadan, Asabari FM, Saki, Positive FM, Akure and retired management staff of the corporation, including Pastor Dare Olorunfemi, Elder Adenrele Ajisefini, Mr Ayodele Aliyu, Alhaji Bashir Omotosho, Mr Femi Oladipo, Pastor Tunji Ogungbade and Mr Steven James.

It was also an occasion to honour a retiring Deputy Director of News and the General Manager, Radio Nigeria Paramount FM, Abeokuta, Mr. Akinyinka Akintola, during a special editorial conference.

Mr Akintola, who was visibly elated, thanked the news management and staff for honouring him.

As a token of appreciation, special awards were presented to outstanding individuals in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the News Department of Radio Nigeria, Ibadan.

They include Osun State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Reverend Bunmi Jenyo and a member representing Iwo, Ayedire, Olaoluwa Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Lukman Mudashiru, popularly called L and K.

Other award recipients are Engineer Kazeem Suleiman and Zonal Youth leader, South West, Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Alhaji Aliyu Saliu, while the royal father of the day was Olupo of Olupona, Oba Abdul Rafiu Oyekanmi.

Speaking on behalf of the award recipients, Reverend Bunmi Jenyo lauded the immeasurable contributions of Radio Nigeria, Ibadan, to society.

The ceremony was not without a call from the Zonal Director, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Dominic Mokikan, to individuals and corporate organisations for continuous partnership with the station.

Mr Mokikan gave assurance that with the wider reach Radio Nigeria, Ibadan had, it would continue to disseminate information to the nooks and crannies of the zone.

He lauded the invaluable contributions of members of the public to the station, including their unwavering support even in times of challenges.

In a remark, the Deputy Director News and Current Affairs Department, Mr. Adewumi Faniran, thanked the guests for honouring the department.

He assured that the station would always disseminate unbiased and factual news to the public.

The management of pension funds in the country leaves retirees in nightmares after years of meritorious service. 

A veteran journalist and former Director, New Media, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN Ibadan, Pastor Dare Olorunfemi made the observation at a programme organized in his honor at Studio One, Radio Nigeria Ibadan, Ova Adebimpe Road, Dugbe Ibadan. 

Pastor Olorunfemi, who was also the immediate past Deputy Director News, FRCN Ibadan, pointed out that the country’s pension should be seamless with retirees being able to access their entitlement at point of exit. 

In a remark, Zonal Director, Radio Nigeria Ibadan, Alhaji Mohammed Bello, described Pastor Olorunfemi as a simple and easy going man, who has cut a niche for himself, winning laurels for the station and himself. 

Alhaji Bello said the occasion was organized for Pastor Olorunfemi as a collective show of gratitude. 

In an opening address, the Deputy Director News, Reverend Segun Ayankoso, said the celebrant was a resilient and accurate man

Speakers at the event including Deputy Director Marketing, Mrs Bolanle Owoyemi, Deputy Director Programmed, Mrs Bolatito Joseph, Deputy Director Translation, Elder Aderenle Ajisefini, and the Director, National Broadcasting Academy, Pastor Ayodele Aliu, lauded the celebrant, noting that he was astute, humble and resilient. 

Similarly, the General Manager, Positive FM, Akure,  Mr Samson Abiodun, General Manager, Premier FM, Reverend Dahunsi and Gold FM, Ilesa, Mr Adedamola Tinubu, said the celebrant left memorable print in the media profession. 

In a remark, Pastor Dare Olorunfemi, who could not hide his pleasure, launching into his speech with a song of thanksgiving, attributed his achievement to God. 

He went down memory lane about how he survived four accidents and recovered despite coming out of them with broken bones and incomplete spinal cord injury. 

Highlight of the event was the presentation of gift to the celebrant as well as group photograph. 

In attendance were family members of Pastor Olorunfemi and other members of staff of Radio Nigeria.

Effective journalism is a veritable tool to achieving desired development in any society.

The immediate past Director, New Media, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Pastor Dare Olorunfemi made this assertion while featuring on Straight Talk, an interview programme on Premier 93.5 FM. 

Pastor Olorunfemi advised journalists to use the profession to advance the course of the society and humanity. 

Pastor Olorunfemi, who was the immediate past Head of News and Current Affairs Division, Ibadan, expressed no regret during his thirty years sojourn in the service Radio Nigeria.

The outgoing Director, New Media, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, , Pastor Dare Olorunfemi has described his experience with the media platform as highly remarkable.

Pastor Olorunfemi while recounting his ups and downs in his thirty years’ service with FRCN said though he faced many challenges, God sustained him all through.

“You know what it means to be in a place for thirty years? I struggled to leave, adversaries forced me to leave, death attempted to force me to leave but God kept me. It is against my will to stay for thus long, it is against the will of my enemy but ultimately, it is the perfect will of God” He said.

The outgoing officer who recalled with nostalgia the gains of working with FRCN, hinted that the platform gave him the opportunity to climb higher echelon.

“The platform God used to take me to nations beyond my imagination, to meet people I wouldn’t have met in life, to step on platforms I wouldn’t have been able to step on otherwise. Today is very nostalgic because as I thank God for my life so far, and I also back look at a career path which God has used to raise me.”

“I used tell people, the greatest I would have been is a Palm wine tapper, hunter or both but God has done much more for me.”

Speaking on pen profession, Pastor Olorunfemi described it as “a big profession that provides the opportunity to serve God and his creation, a platform that gives voice of the voiceless, a voice to fight injustice, and a platform to be an advocate. On the other side, it could be a platform for adversaries where you do bad”.

 “Journalism is a two-edged sword, you can use it to the advancement of humanity, you can use it to create adversity, you can use it to actualise whatever God had deposited in you; as a teacher, counselor or whatever”

Pastor Olorunfemi, however, expressed regret that the value system in the journalism profession had been corrupted and standards have fallen as a result.

He added that crop of practitioners in recent times who were expected to know much about everything usually fall below the required standard.

Pastor Olorunfemi then charged practicing journalists to perform their role according to professional ethics of the job, so as to the profession to enviable heights.

Thirteen members of staff of the News Department of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, have received awards for their outstanding performances in the year 2019 from the News Management.

Radio Nigeria correspondent reports that the awardees were drawn from various stations across the Southwest Zone of the FRCN.

In a remark, Zonal Director, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Alhaji Mohammed Bello urged them to see the awards as a challenge to perform better in the New Year.

Some members of staff who were given awards pledged to continually contribute their quota to move the station forward.

Also speaking, Deputy Director News, FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Pastor Dare Olorunfemi said the awardees were carefully selected for their outstanding performances.

The programme featured talks on how to improve on the job by the Head of News, Premier FM, Mrs. Olutola Daramola.
