Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has ignited shockwaves across the political landscape by formally quitting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—a decision he made effective November 4, 2025.

His spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the bombshell announcement, revealing that the governor had already sent a resignation letter to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, in Ede North.

In the letter, Governor Adeleke blamed his dramatic exit on a deepening crisis within the PDP’s national leadership, declaring that the turmoil left him with no choice but to walk away immediately.

“Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” he wrote in the personally signed letter.

Despite the abrupt break, Governor Adeleke expressed gratitude to the party that powered his rise—from Senator for Osun West to Governor of Osun State.

His resignation now casts a long shadow over Osun State’s political future, fueling speculation about his next move as his administration enters a decisive phase.

Osun State governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has warned political appointees against corruption and abuse of office in their various ministries and agencies.

The governor gave the warning at the 2024 prayer programme of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Osun State where he was also endorsed as the governorship flag bearer of the party for 2026 guber polls.

Addressing party stakeholders and top officials of the state government, Governor Adeleke advised the political appointees to be mindful of public service regulations and beware of self-serving postures as they are in office to serve the people.

“Let me use this opportunity to warn our party members holding various offices to be good representatives of the party. We are a party of law and order, due process and rule of law. We must comply with the law in all our doings.”  Senator Adeleke said.

“Appointees must know their rights and responsibilities. As board members, you are not to be involved in the day-to-day running of the agency. That is the turf of the management of the agency. But as a board, you have supervisory roles on the management in line with policies you set at your board meetings and in line with laws setting up the agency. All appointees must take note of this separation of functions.” He said.

Governor Adeleke maintained that his administration would not tolerate corruption and abuse of office and powers either by appointees or management of the agencies declaring it will impose heavy sanctions on those who breach state laws.

While calling on PDP party members to unite for the good of the party and the state, the governor said the reconciliation process has commenced stressing that there would be no more segregation.

Speaking on behalf of the State Working Committee, the State Publicity Secretary, Mr Ayodeji Areola, said the party has declared that the 2026 governorship ticket of the PDP in Osun State is for Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Also, the Osun State chairman of the party, Mr Sunday Bisi, eulogised the state governor for making the party proud since the assumption of office, noting that the prayer session was to thank God for the past’s successes and the future’s victory.

The Supreme Court has affirmed Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP as the elected Governor of Osun State.

Mr Gboyega Oyetola and his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, approached the apex court in a suit numbered, SC/CV/510/2023, praying the court to set aside the decision of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, which voided the judgment of the Osun State Election Petition Tribunal, which returned Oyetola as the winner of the November July 16, 2022 governorship election.

Mr Oyetola and APC in their case filed to Supreme Court by their lead counsel, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), want the apex court to determine whether the appellate court was right “in declaring as nullity the judgment of the tribunal delivered on January 27 notwithstanding the earlier resolution of the same court that Section 294(1) of the Constitution is inapplicable to a tribunal”.

The Justice Tertsea Kume led-tribunal, had on January 27, in a split decision of two-to-one, voided the declaration of Adeleke as the winner of the governorship election held on July 16, 2022.

In the majority judgment, the tribunal upheld a petition filed by the former governor of the state, Adegboyega Oyetola of the APC who came second in the election.

It held that Adeleke did not score the majority of lawful votes, adding that the conduct of the election was not in substantial compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

However, in his dissenting judgment, the third member of the panel, Justice P. Agbuli, affirmed Senator Adeleke as the valid winner of the election and struck out the petition that was lodged by Oyetola and the APC.

The development triggered the Adeleke and his party, to approach the Appeal Court, and prayed the appellate court to set aside the verdict of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which sacked him from office.

The court, which found Adeleke’s appeal meritorious and allowed it held that the lower tribunal was “wrong to reach the conclusion that there was over-voting during the state governorship election held on 16 July 2022″.

Justice Mohamed Lawal Shuaibu, who prepared and delivered the unanimous judgment held that “the lower tribunal was wrong to have come to the conclusion of overvoting based on the document presented by the first and second respondents (Oyetola and APC) and also on Exhibit BVR, which requires demonstration in public court”.

The Court of Appeal noted that Oyetola and the APC “did not tender the voters’ registers and Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) machines,” which captured data of eligible voters at the Osun governorship election and held that the foundation of what transpired at the polling units would only be established by the evidence that is contained in the voter register and BVAS machines, which are the foundation of any election”.

Aside from setting aside the judgment of the lower tribunal, the appellate court awarded 500,000 naira cost against the APC and its candidate, Gboyega Oyetola.

Similarly, the court dismissed the cross-appeal filed against the judgment of the Osun State Election Petition Tribunal by the former Osun State governor and his party.

The cross-appeal which centred on the educational qualification of Governor Adeleke was thrown out for lacking in merit.

Judiciary

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Monday reserved judgement on the Osun State governorship appeal filed by Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The appeal filed by Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party is against a judgment of the tribunal which invalidated his election as governor of Osun State.

The three-member panel of justices led by Justice M.F. Shuaibu began sitting on the appeal at about 10 am while Adeleke is the appellant, Oyetola and the All Progressives Congress are 1st and 2nd respondents in the appeal marked: CA/AK/EPT/GOV/01/2023.

The Independent National Electoral Commission and the PDP are also joined as 3rd respondent and 4th respondents respectively.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had on January  27, voided the July 16, 2022, election that produced Adeleke of PDP as the elected governor.

INEC had declared Adeleke the winner of the election after polling a total of 403,371 votes. He was said to have won in 17 of the 30 local government areas in the state.

But the panel led by Justice Terste Kume, in its judgment, invalidated the election and declared Mr Gboyega Oyetola of APC as the valid winner of the poll.

The tribunal directed INEC to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Adeleke and his deputy, Kola Adewusi, both of whom had been sworn in.

It, however, directed that the Certificate of Return should instead be issued to Oyetola.

Justice Kume held that the governorship election was not held in compliance with Nigeria’s Electoral Act. The tribunal also held that the governorship election was characterised by over-voting. It said after deducting the excessive votes, the figure Oyetola polled at the election was 314, 921.

The tribunal, thus, ordered that Oyetola should be returned as governor of Osun State.

NAN reports that INEC, in its earlier results, said Oyetola won in 13 LGAs with 375,027 votes in the July 16, 2022 governorship election.

Fifteen candidates contested for the poll which was keenly contested between Adeleke and Oyetola.

In his petition, Oyetola, the immediate-past governor of the state, had alleged that the election was characterised by over-voting in 749 polling units.

He also argued that Adeleke forged the academic credentials he submitted to NEC to contest for the election.

The tribunal had commenced sitting in August 2022, a few weeks after the governorship election. Oyetola and the APC were petitioners in the case with Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and Akin Olujimi, SAN, as their lead counsels.

INEC was the 1st defendant, Adeleke the 2nd defendant and PDP as 3rd defendant.

The hearing was still ongoing as at the time of filing the report.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Senator Teslim Kolawole Folarin has described the impeachment of the Deputy Governor, Rauf Olaniyan as illegal and lack of respect for the rule of law.

He also appealed to members of APC in the state to remain calm, adding that the Deputy Governor, who had since defected to the major opposition party, would appeal the impeachment in the Court of Appeal.

He said APC would not relent in providing an alternative to undemocratic acts of the Peoples Democratic Party (APC) led administration in the state.

Folarin, who advised the Oyo State Assembly’s legislators to remember that posterity would judge whatever they do today, said the process, which they followed in removing the deputy governor contradicts the tenets of the Constitution.

The third-term senator in a statement he personally signed in Ibadan on Monday said the committee set up by the Chief Judge of the state to investigate the Deputy Governor also showed it lacked integrity.

He queried why the committee would give the Deputy Governor just 15 minutes to appear before it, adding that the Chief Judge breached his oath of office by ignoring the service of notice of appeal and application for injunction pending appeal when he proceeded to constitute the investigation committee.

According to Folarin, despite the intervention of the legal adviser to the Deputy Governor that he needed time to prepare himself for the allegations levelled against him, the Chief Judge set up a committee to carry out his bidding.

He said the illegal impeachment does not stop the Court of Appeal and by extension the Supreme Court to do their job in days to come.

He also expressed reservation over the way the State’s Chief Judge set up a 7-man committee, pointing out that there are more questions to be asked over the hurry behind the process.

Folarin affirmed his conviction on why the impeachment of Olaniyan would not just fail but the consequences would also in the nearest future hunt those orchestrating as similar moves in some states failed.

Folarin assured Olaniyan that APC would stand by him in this period of his ordeal.

Chief Press Secretary, CPS to the governor, Mr Taiwo Adisa who expressed the governor’s condolence to the family of the deceased child, said contrary to the unverified news story alleging the killing of the child by a vehicle in the convoy of the Oyo State governor, the girl was killed by a Toyota Matrix Car.

According to the governor’s aide, the vehicle was said to have lost control after its front tyres burst while in motion, close to the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally.

The CPS said the governor’s convoy had arrived at the Oja-gbo Town Hall venue of the rally, with the governor and his entourage settled in, adding that it was while the programme was ongoing that some residents stormed the venue of the event with the corpse of the child.

He maintained that it is common knowledge that Toyota Matrix vehicles are not part of any governor’s convoy in Nigeria.

The statement enjoins the people of Ogbomoso to remain calm and rest assured that the government would get to the root of this matter.

The governor’s aide warned against false and sensational journalism, stating that though Governor Makinde commiserated with the family of the deceased, because he values all lives and would never want any life lost under any circumstance, negative elements in the society should not smear him with falsehood over the death of the child.

Some aggrieved members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo East Local Government Area of Oyo have staged a protest to the state secretariat to demand for primary election than selection of candidates being insinuated in some quarters for the forthcoming council poll in the state.

The protesters, who barricaded the governor’s office carrying placard with various inscriptions, claimed to have visited Governor Seyi Makinde’s private residence, and would proceed to occupy the party secretariat.

One of the leaders of PDP protesters, Alhaji Lukman Adeyanju, who presented the concern of the aggrieved members, insisted that internal democracy must thrive in the party

The Chief of Staff to Governor Seyi Makinde, Bisi Ilaka, who is also from Oyo had prevailed on the protesters even as most of them expressed their minds.

Chief Ilaka, who declined to make an official comment, however stressed that the PDP as a party would address their concerns and grievances.

It would be recalled that Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party had scheduled Thursday 4th for the primary which it later postponed

The party thereafter set up a five man committee to interface with aspirants and leadership of the party in the 33 local government areas of the state ahead of the election slated for 15th May, 2021.
