Leaders of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the South-West have appointed a five-man committee to reconcile aggrieved and warring factions of the party in the zone to bring about peace and unity.

The committee is headed by former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Other members of the committee are Chief Saka Balogun, Chief (Mrs.) Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, Ambassador Omolade Oluwateru and Mr Olayinka Kukoyi.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Mr Taiwo Adisa, indicates that the party leaders met at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan and released a communique endorsed by the Acting National Vice Chairman, South-West, Dayo Ogungbenro.

The statement notes that the meeting also resolved that zonal executive positions of the party should be zoned to all states of the South-West, adding that it has become imperative for the party to unite ahead future elections across the zone.

According to the statement, leaders of the party in their contribution harped on the need for unity and cohesion in the party stating that the zone remained strategic to the PDP if it must win election at the national level.

The leaders, including the Oyo State governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, former governors of Osun and Ekiti states, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Engineer Segun Oni as well as members of the Board of Trustees of the party, and party chairmen from the states, among others.

The PDP leaders also used the occasion to call on the Federal Government and the National Assembly not to go-ahead with the proposed clampdown on social media, saying the move will infringe on Nigerians’ freedom of expression. 

They called on the Federal Government to strengthen existing laws to prevent the abuse of the freedom of expression.

In his remarks, Governor Seyi Makinde maintained that the meeting was convened to address the challenges facing the party in the South-West.

Governor Makinde at the meeting called for harmony in the party emphasising that South West PDP must show leadership in its dealings.

“One of the things I feel we will take away from this meeting is also to agree on the zoning for the positions available within the south-west exco. And anything that is zoned to a particular state, the leaders and stakeholders from that state will take it home and make a decision on how to populate that”.

“Once we do that, when we get to zonal congress, we will do what we have to do and go home. This is how things have always been done in the South-West and we will go back to that tradition. The South-West must show leadership for the party nationally and the zone must show leadership for the country.”

Earlier, the acting zonal chairman of the South-West PDP, Mr Dayo Ogungbenro appealed to aggrieved members to bury their hatchets and forge ahead for unity.

Mr Ogunbenro admonished leaders of the party and other stakeholders to allow peace to reign in different state chapters stressing that without peace, we cannot go anywhere.”

Crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ekiti state is yet to be over as two different state executives emerged during today’s Congress held in Ado Ekiti.

At one of the delegates Congress held in Ado-Ekiti, under the supervision of the National body of the party, Chief Bisi Kolawole was elected as the new chairman of the PDP with a total vote of 1651.

In his acceptance speech, Chief Kolawole said the election of the state executive was the beginning of a new dawn in the party, with a promise to promote unity among members and bring development to the party.

On his part, a Former Governor, Chief Segun Oni urged PDP members in the state to come together and champion the course of the party.

Also, Former Governor Ayodele Fayose said the party would re-strategize to gain its rightful position in the state and charged the new executive to let the interest of the party be paramount in their hearts.

The Chairman, Electoral Committee from Abuja, Mr. Ayuba Balogun commended PDP in Ekiti for the conduct of the delegates Congress.

Similar, a former commissioner for Agriculture in Ekiti state, Mr KEHINDE Odebunmi emerged the state chairman of the PDP in another congress held in Ado Ekiti.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Odebunmi promised to reconcile all aggrieved members with a view to moving the party forwarded.

The immediate past state chairman of the party, Mr Gboyega Oguntuase who spoke through Mr Jackson ADEBAYO urged the new executive led by Mr Odebunmi to to bring all the party members together under one umbrella.

Mr BISI KOLAWOLE emerged the state PDP chairman under the camp that loyal to the former Governor, Ayodele Fayose while Mr KEHINDE Odebunmi was elected another state chairman by the group loyal to Senator Biodun Olujimi.

The Bayelsa State Gubernatorial Petition Tribunal nullifies the election of Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State.

The election was nullified based on a petition by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party, ANDP, which argued that it was unlawfully excluded from participating in the election.

The tribunal ruling can, however, still be challenged at the appeal court.

The ruling comes two days after the tribunal dismissed three other petitions against the election of Mr Diri of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP.

The petitions dismissed by the tribunal were filed by the Alliance for Democracy, AD, the United People’s Congress, UPC, and the Liberation Movement, LM.

The death has been announced of the former National Auditor of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Fatai Adeyanju.

An Ogun State PDP faction Publicity Secretary, Mr. Sunkanmi Oyejide, who announced the death of the former national officer, said Alhaji Adeyanju died  at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, and would be buried according to Islamic rites on Saturday 8 August, 2020. 

Mr. Oyejide described the death as a great loss to members of his immediate and the political family in Ogun State.

A factional chairman of Ogun State PDP, Chief Samson Bamgbose also in a statement made available in Abeokuta, described the late Alhaji Adeyanju as a gentleman and loyal party man who was committed to the unity and progress of the party.

Chief Bamgbose said the former national auditor was a peacemaker and a friend.

He prayed to God to grant him Aljanah Firdaus.

Eight aspirants are participating in the primary election of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Ondo State with over two thousand delegates to choose who becomes the party’s candidate for the Ondo State October 10 Governorship Election.

The aspirants are Eyitayo Jegede, Agboola Ajayi, Bode Ayorinde, Godday Erewa, Eddy Olafeso, Banji Okunomo, Sola Ebiseeni and Boluwaji Kunlere.

The delegates from the eighteen council areas are converging on the International Event Centre, The Dome in Akure the state capital for the exercise.

Already the party’s national working committee had appointed Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwanyi as the Chairman of the Primary Election Committee.

Ondo PDP director of media and publicity, Mr Zadok Akintoye told Radio Nigeria that all arrangements had been put in place for a hitch free exercise.

The winner in the election will be challenging the incumbent, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the APC who is seeking re-election in the October 10 governorship polls.

Ondo State Deputy Governor, Mr Agboola Ajayi has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, dumping the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The Deputy Governor resigned his membership of the APC at Ward 2, Apoi, In Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

This came a day after he was prevented from moving out of the government house in Akure with his pilot vehicle.

While picking his PDP membership card, Mr Agboola Ajayi said he was returning to the PDP being one of the founding fathers of the party.

Receiving the deputy governor, PDP chairman in Apoi Ward 2, Mr Festus Oboro said Mr Agboola had simply returned home promising that the party would support him in all ways.

The deputy governor’s resignation from APC puts an end to the speculation trailing his planned defection.

The Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Mr Tope Okeowo in a chat with Radio Nigeria confirmed that Mr Ajayi has also obtained the PDP membership card.

He is expected to be received at the PDP Secretariat in Akure within the week.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi has shown interest in the governorship contest saying he would participate in the PDP primary with other qualified aspirants. 

Mr. Ajayi debunked speculations that he had been adopted as the PDP governorship by the National Working Committee of the party.

The Deputy Governor in a statement signed by his press secretary, Tope Okeowo promised not to undermine the peaceful atmosphere that attracted him to the PDP.

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki is being screened today by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Screening Committee to participate in the Edo State PDP primary election scheduled for June 25, 2020.

Governor Obaseki recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, following his disqualification from the APC governorship primary in Edo State.
