People living with disabilities in the country should be considered in decisions that border on various issues including climate change and health. 

 Speakers canvassed this at a symposium on Climate Change Health and Disability held at the College of Medicine, University College Hospital Ibadan, 

Chairman of the occasion, who is the Grand Patron, Association of People Living with Disabilities, Oyo State Chapter, Professor Sabit Olagoke, said the impact of climate change was obvious globally due to industrialization and urbanization. 

He explained that certain groups including People Living with Disabilities are disproportionately burdened by the effects of climate change. 

Professor Olagoke said that People Living with Disabilities are often left out of plans meant to protect the rights of people to clean and healthy environment, most especially as it affects auditory and visually impaired persons.

In a paper entitled ‘Climate Change and Infectious Diseases’, Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Ogun State Branch, Dr Kunle Ashimi, pointed out that  People with Disabilities were faced with lots of  adverse effects of climate ranging from flood disasters, drought, to lack of access to quality health care and poverty, which expose them to water borne diseases, besides  difficulties to move from one place to another for safety.

Dr Ashimi called on government to render necessary assistance by empowering individuals with disabilities to become agents of change. 

He noted that people with disabilities should not be marginalized but rather be involved in decision making over climate change as well as other matters that affect their wellbeing. 

Earlier in an address of welcome, Head of Department of Physiotherapy College of Medicine UCH, Associate Professor Adesola Odole, said the Symposium would help to shed light on the critical intersection of climate change, health and disabilities with a focus on impact of climate change in Nigeria. 

Associate Professor Odole explained that rising temperature, extreme weather conditions and environmental degradation have had severe consequences on health and well being, especially of individuals with disabilities, making it imperative to understand and address the unique challenges they faced.

The don, who equally stressed the need for people with disabilities to be  involved in decisions over matters that affect  them, urged governments to reduce cost of health care to facilitate their access good health care 

National President, Joint National Association of Person with Disabilities, Aliyu Abdullahi, who said it was necessary to for government to put in place necessary measures to protect  people with disabilities, appealed to the incoming government to include people with disabilities in governance for good representatives.

 Chief Executive Officer, CEO,  RHOWI, Hajiya Amina In her presentation said MGDs goals in 2023 states was designed to leave no one behind, noted that people with disabilities should be given equal rights in the society, saying if there was any decision that had to do with disasters, non involvement of people with Disabilities would amount to discrimination, and condemnable. 

Two of the participants at the event, Opeyemi John and Magret Sunday said the Symposium had impacted positively  on them .

As Muslims in Nigeria join their counterparts across the globe celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Fitri, the Founder, Spiritual Head and Grand Imam of Shafaudeen In Islam Worldwide, Professor Sabit Olagoke has charged the Islamic faithful not to go back to all the habits they forsook during the 29-day Ramadan fast.

In his Eid-el-Fitri message, Professor Olagoke said the gains and blessings of Ramadan are not limited to the observance period alone, but extends to the period after the injunction and to access the blessings.

He said Muslims are expected to keep to the tenets of the Holy Quran as regards the Ramadan fast and enjoined all to avoid hate speech even under hostile environment of provocation.

According to him, it is one of the imports of the practical message of Ramadan.

Asking for moderate celebration of the Eid-el-Fitri, the cleric enjoined all to be cautious and celebrate within the ambit of civility and consideration for others, noting that “we must tolerate ourselves through upholding the principle of SWOT Analysis with basic support of the SMART concept to maximally achieve on current drive of governance transition and dispensation for a better future of bequeath-able legacy of Sustainable Development”.

Professor Olagoke used the occasion to pray for the country’s leadership at all levels and the people of Nigeria in general, “I pray that the peace of God that exceeds human understanding be bestowed upon our country, as a result of our sacrifices during the Lent and Ramadan fast”.

Revival of value system, avoidance of religious extremism, attitudinal change to insecurity and youth empowerment have been reaffirmed as antidote to security challenges facing Nigeria.

The Founder and Spiritual Head, Shafaudeen in Islam Worldwide, Professor Sabit Olagoke made the submission in a presentation during the 2022 annual stakeholders conference with the theme “Challenges of Insecurity and Terrorism in Nigeria” at Wakajaye, Ibadan.

Professor Olagoke, who emphasized that the conference which was in collaboration with the Centre for Religious Cooperation and Tolerance was to the restoration of peace in Nigeria suggested that Nigerians needed to become change agents, strong connection between religious centres and government policies, and harness youths potential to curb insecurity.

Professor Olagoke also called on government to be masses-focused and enthrone justice and equity in governance.

The founder of Shafaudeen in Islam urged Nigerians not to lose hope in a better Nigeria and prioritize communal harmony and brotherhood.

In another presentation on security and development issues, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State command, Mrs Ngozi Onadeko represented by the Commander, Federal Highway Patrol, Oyo State, Alhaji Usman Sarafadeen tasked parents to be conscious of their children’s company and movements, while stressing the imperative of youth reorientation and develop the zeal to change the society for better.

The Controller of Customs, Oyo/Osun Area Command, Mr. A. R. Abdulkadir represented by CSC Idowu Owolabi and the Comptroller of Nigeria Immigration, Oyo State Command, Mr Isa Dan-Sulaiman represented by the chief Imam of Immigration Mosque, Alhaji Abdulmumin Akinlabi identified insecurity as an enemy of business activities and investments, pointed out that there was the need for government to provide more border equipment, ensure security in volatile areas and intensity training of security personnel for adequate security of lives and property.

Highlights of the conference which had in attendance peace advocates, socio-cultural organizations was a cultural display by students of the Shafaudeen Group of School on the Importance of peace and unity and book presentations to security formations.

The need for attitudinal change improved funding of education, the moral upbringing of children and job provision by the government as a panacea to corruption formed the focus of a day public lecture to commemorate the 2020 World Anti-Corruption Day.

The event organized by the Peacemakers Guide Humanitarian Support Organization in collaboration with Shafaudeen Centre for Religious Cooperation and Tolerance in Ibadan bemoaned high level of poverty and insecurity in Nigeria.

In a lecture by the founder, Shafaudeen in Islam, Wakajaye, Ibadan, Professor Sabit Olagoke said corruption had affected the economic development of Nigeria thereby increasing poverty and unemployment ratio.

Professor Olagoke who blamed corruption in the country to lack of sincere commitment by past political leaders, loss of moral and ethical values in the society stressed the need for integrity and patriotism by Nigerians to overcome corruption.

Representatives of National Orientation Agency, NOA, in Oyo State, Oyo State Ministry of Health and Civil Society Organizations called for renewed efforts by all and sundry to overcome the menace of corruption in the country.

In a remark, the Executive Secretary, Muslim Umah of Southwest Nigeria, MUSWEN, Professor Muslih Tayo-Yahyah and former executive secretary, MUSWEN, Professor Dawud Noibi called on Nigerians to seek divine intervention to end corruption and other crises affecting the progress of the country.

Director-General of the Peacemakers Guide Humanitarian Support Organization, Professor Adegbolagun judge said the event with the theme; “United Against Corruption” was meant to seek collective responses to address corruption as the day is being marked.

Reactions have continued to trail the death of a former petroleum minister, Professor Tam David-West who passed on yesterday at the age of eighty-three.

The late David-West took his last breath at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.
