You are indeed super! – Sports Minister Hails Super Eagles

The Super Eagles are truly worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.

The Minister of Youth and sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare made this known in a statement issued following the team’s qualification for the 2022 Nations Cup in Cameroon.

A statement by the Minister’s media office said “Congratulations, Super Eagles for making us proud once again through your qualification to the Nations Cup. You are indeed super. Keep soaring to the creed of your name. You are worthy  Ambassadors of our great country. So delighted  that you qualified in grand style Nigerians are very excited and proud of your feat.”

The Gernot Rohr led team secured their ticket to the Biennial event on Tuesday following their 3-0 win over the Crocodiles of Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

On Saturday, they had defeated the Squirrels of Benin Republic 1- 0 in  Port Novo to take an unassailable lead into the last group game which they won convincingly.

Super Eagles Land in Cotonou, Ready for Benin Republic Clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have arrived Cotonou, Benin Republic ahead of their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against the Squirrels of Benin Republic.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to face the Squirrels at the Stade Charles de Gaulle, Porto-Novo.

Gernot Rohr’s men will hold a training session inside the Stade Charles de Gaulle in the evening before their encounter against the Squirrels.

Nigeria top Group L with eight points after four rounds of matches, while Benin are second with seven points.

A draw tomorrow will guarantee the Super Eagles passage to the AFCON to be hosted by Cameroon in January.

Ahmed Musa has never disappointed Nigerians – Governor Bello

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state has described the Captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Ahmed Musa as a footballer who has never disappointed football loving people within and outside the country.

Governor Bello made this known when the Super Eagles captain paid him a courtesy visit.

The governor who is a staunch fan of the Super Eagles said Musa is an excellent and clinical attacker who with the entire Super Eagles team has brought so much pride to football fans both within and outside the country. 

Earlier, the Super Eagles striker had described Governor Bello as a bridge builder who dedicated himself to the welfare of the youths and the elderly.

Ahmed Musa also presented a Super Eagles jersey to the Governor.

Joe Erico, Former Super Eagles Goalkeeping Coach Dies at 72

Former Green Eagle and assistant coach of the Super Eagles, Joe Erico has sadly passed on at the age of 72 according to reports this morning.

Popularly known as ‘Jogo Bonito Exponent,’ the former Julius Berger manager passed on after suffering from an unknown ailment.

Goal.com Nigeria’s Chief Editor Shina Oludare tweeted about his death saying: “Former @NGSuperEagles goalkeeping coach Joe Erico has passed on at 72, one of his family members just told me on phone. He had complained of a minor stomach ache on Monday evening and on Tuesday morning [today], he waved the world goodbye. May God grant Jogobonito eternal rest.”

FFCN Dares Super Eagles to go for Win in Freetown

National President, Football Fans Club of Nigeria, FFCN, Ambassador Oluwakemi Ogunfuwa has appealed to the players and technical crew of  Super Eagles to go for maximum points against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in the second leg of the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers billed for tomorrow in Freetown, Sierra Leone. 

The Lagos based football administrator stated this while playing host to newsmen journalists in her office at Obanikoro, Lagos.

“Well, we all felt bad that we were not at the stands to cheer Eagles to victory but no thanks to COVID-19. I think in sports, particularly in football, impossibility is nothing. We have seen the worst upset than this in football. Brazil were humiliated in the hands of Germany, same with Argentina with their Lionel Messi. At club level, Barcelona and Liverpool had their fare share of the upset lately from Bayern Munich and Aston Villa. I think the 12th man support at our home could have probably made difference as the atmosphere would have be in favour of Nigeria and the players would have been greatly encouraged with ambience and melodious renditions emanating from us” The CAF award winner posited.

“Let me further add that failure is not the final and success is never ending.

The ability of the Super Eagles to rise up from the unexpected results and wallop the Leone Stars in their own soil would serve as tonic to delete the ugly memory in the mind of sports loving Nigerians.”

“Let the Eagles put the last results behind them and teach the lowly ranked Sierra Leone a lesson of their life in their own backyard tomorrow so as to make Nigerians happy again”. President charges.

AFCON Qualifier: FFCN Assures Super Eagles of Spiritual Support

Following the directive of the Confederation of African Football, CAF that all African Nations cup qualifying matches billed for this month should be played behind closed door, members of Football Fans Club of Nigeria, FFCN have gone spiritual to rally round the Super Eagles to defeat Leone Stars of Sierra Leone tomorrow.

President of the Supporter’s Club, Ambassador Oluwakemi Ogunfuwa made this known while speaking with newsmen in Lagos.

According to the football administrator, the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the presence of football loving people at various stadia worldwide.

She therefore assured the spiritual presence of her members at the stadium from the Secretariat in Lagos where good numbers of fans would be watching the game live and the Super Eagles will come clean against their rivals.

The match is slated for the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Benin City, Edo state

Joseph Yobo Named New Super Eagles Assistant Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed former Super Eagles’ defender and captain Joseph Yobo as assistant coach of the team. 

Yobo replaces Imama Amapakabo.

Yobo who played for the Nigeria U20 boys – Flying Eagles – during the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1999, won his first cap for the senior team in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match away to Zambia in Chingola in April 2001, and played in three FIFA World Cup finals in 2002, 2010 and 2014.

The attack –minded defender also played in six Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2013, capping it with leading the Super Eagles to their third continental title in South Africa in 2013. 

He played a total of 100 matches for Nigeria at senior level.

Joseph Michael Yobo was born on 6th September 1980
