The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has announced the suspension of its ongoing two-week warning strike.

The National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, made this known in a press briefing held in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to report, Prof. Piwuna said, the decision stemmed from the meeting of the National Executive Council meeting which was held overnight and ended by 4:00 am on Wednesday.

He noted that, the union decided to embark on the strike due to the failure of the government to meet its demands on time.

“We’ve had useful engagements with representatives of the government to consider the response to the draft renegotiation of the 2009 agreements. However, we are definitely not where we were prior to the commencement of the strike.

“The union acknowledged that the government returned to the negotiation table. While noting that a lot more work is still required, NEC came to the conclusion that the ongoing strike should be reviewed. The decision to review the strike action was a result of efforts by our students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress.

“Consequently, NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to reciprocate the efforts of well-meaning Nigerians.”

Recall that ASUU declared a total and comprehensive warning strike starting from Monday, October 13.

ASUU is currently demanding the conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, the release of the withheld three and a half months’ salaries, sustainable funding of public universities, revitalization of public universities, and cessation of the victimisation of lecturers in LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO.

Others included; payment of outstanding 25-35% salary arrears, payment of promotion arrears for over four years and release of withheld third-party deductions (cooperative contributions, union check-off dues).

The embattled senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Tuesday returned to the Senate after serving a six-month suspension.

According to report, she was seen smiling as the upper chamber resumed plenary following a 10-week recess, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio presiding over the session.

The lawmaker was accompanied by a handful of activists and loyalists, including Aisha Yesufu, who was spotted in the gallery, while others weren’t allowed in.

She walked into the Senate chamber and made her way to her seat and after exchanging pleasantries with a few senators.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return marks the end of a suspension that had generated widespread public debate earlier in the year.

The lawmaker was suspended in March 2025 for six months over alleged misconduct during her protest against the reassignment of her seat by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on February 20.

Following her suspension, her office—located in Suite 2.05 of the Senate Wing—had been locked since March 6, 2025.

However, it was recently unsealed by the Deputy Director of the National Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms, Alabi Adedeji, paving the way for her return.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had described Akpabio as a “dictator” when she was allowed into her office two weeks ago after serving her suspension.

The plenary recorded a significant turnout of lawmakers, indicating a full return to legislative business.

Osun State Government has suspended a teacher, Abimbola Olowookere for allegedly defrauding some recently recruited teachers to the tune of N30,000 claiming to influence their posting.

Reports got to the Osun State Ministry of Education that said Mr Olowookere has been collecting the money from the teachers in Osun East Education District so as to post them to their preferred school of choice anywhere outside the district.

Briefing newsmen on the matter, the State Commissioner for Education, Mr Folorunsho Oladoyin, who condemned the act, advised the recently recruited teachers not to listen to anyone who demands money or other gratification from them under the guise of influencing their postings.

He said the State Government had recruited the first batch of 1,000 teachers with the determination to post them to schools and towns where their services are basically needed.

The Commissioner stressed that the posting of the new teachers rests solely with the state Ministry of Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, saddled with the official responsibility of knowing where the teachers are needed.

Mr Oladoyin however warned any teacher or official of government who is still in the act of collecting money before rendering one service or the other to desist from it or be ready to face the full weight of the law.

Spokesperson for the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Jimoh Ibrahim has said MC Oluomo has not received any letter suspending him from his role as the transport workers’ boss in the state.

Ibrahim stated this in a chat with Punch Newspaper on Thursday while reacting to a viral letter by the NURTW national leadership in Abuja reportedly suspending MC Oluomo as Lagos chair.

The letter dated March 9, 2022 and signed by NURTW General Secretary, Kabiru Yau, said MC Oluomo has been suspended indefinitely for gross misconducts amongst other offenses. You subsequently directed MC Oluomo to hand over to his deputy.

But Buhari said on Wednesday that, his principal has not received any letter to the effect of the reported suspension.

He said, “As far as we are concerned, we are not aware of the suspension because we have not received any letter from the national leadership.

“A leader of an organisation cannot be suspended on social media.

“MC Oluomo is going into a meeting at the moment and he is going to chair the meeting. He remains Lagos NURTW chair.”

According to report, the national headquarters of the union queried Akinsanya for refusing to carry out instructions given to him in recent times by the national leadership.

He was however suspended indefinitely, following the Query. In a letter that generated a lot of comment.

In his response, Akinsanya, who said he had successfully complied with his oath of office, refuted the claim that he instigated members of the union to assault Abiola.

In his reaction to the purported suspension of Governor Kayode Fayemi by an unknown group, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Yinka Oyebode, described it as a joke taken too far.

Oyebode said the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party is governed by laws, adding that members of the group cannot hide under their recent suspension to announce a dubious suspension they lack the locus to handle.

While one would have dismissed their claims as another failed attempt to polarise the party in the state, it is also important to put it on record that the action of the group smacks of criminal impersonation as none of those who signed the purported suspension letter were executive members of the party at ward, Local government or state level.

The action is but a joke taken too far as they never had such power they want to arrogate to themselves while they were members of the party, much less now that they have been suspended.

Governor Fayemi however remains unperturbed by this antics of suspended members.

Well-meaning members of the public as well as members of APC are urged to disregard the news of the purported suspension as it only exists in the imagination of members of the group.

Dr Kayode Fayemi remains the indisputable leader of the APC in Ekiti State.
