The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Prof. Simeon Bamire, has appealed to students of the institution who were victims of the raid on some off-campus hostels along Ife/Ibadan Road by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to put the experience behind them and move on. 

Giving an update on the matter on Thursday, the Vice Chancellor, in a statement signed by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, commended the EFCC for the quick profiling and release of the students, adding that colleagues of the affected students pressing for their release also exhibited discipline in their agitations. 

 The statement read partly, “After a spirited effort by the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, which sent representatives to the Ibadan zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to intervene in the case of arrested students, the EFCC has released 59 of the students.

“While thanking the officials of the EFCC for the quick profiling and eventual release of the students in less than 24 hours, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Simeon Bamire urged the EFCC to partner with the management of various Institutions of higher learning to organize workshops for students across faculties to sensitize the students about the danger of financial crimes and cyber criminalities. 

“The Vice-Chancellor, therefore, appealed to students who were victims of the raid to put the experience behind them and move on with their lives. He lauded other students who rallied round their affected colleagues for being their brothers’ keepers without being violent nor exhibiting any act of vandalism.”

Recall that EFCC operatives stormed hostels in Oduduwa Estate, Ile-Ife in the early hours of Wednesday and arrested 69 students of the university. 

The students were taken to the Ibadan Zonal Office of the commission, where they were detained. However the management of the institution, as well as the parents and guardians of the affected students, secured freedom for 59 of them on Wednesday.

Heads of tertiary institutions have emphasized the need for collaborative efforts of stakeholders to ensure sound academic background for Nigerian students especially at the lower level of education.

They made this known during courtesy visits embarked upon by Premier FM Ibadan delegation led by its General Manager, Mr Adedamola Tinubu to the managements of University of Ibadan and The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

Vice chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale who decried the low standard at the basic stage of education, attributed lack of effective communication among students to people’s dying reading culture and addiction to social media.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Professor Ezekiel Ayoola, the vice chancellor urged Radio Nigeria Premier FM to sustain its educative and enlightenment programmes

While commending Premier FM management for the courtesy visit, the U.I VC hinted that the university was ready to partner the radio station on the university of Ibadan forthcoming 75th anniversary. 

Similarly at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, the Rector, Prof Kazeem Adeniyi expressed the institution’s resolve to collaborate with premier FM in the area of building capacity of students and technical exchange.

Earlier, General Manager, Premier FM Iyagunku, Ibadan, Mr Adedamola Tinubu who x-rayed the enormous strength of Radio Nigeria, with emphasis on it National and Zonal coverage said the purpose of the visit was to solidify the standing relationship with the institutions and seek partnership on areas beneficial to both institutions.

The Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA has appointed Professor Adenike Temidayo Oladiji of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Ilorin, as the 8th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University.

The Council presided over by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Ambassador Dr Godknows Igali, ratified the appointment at its Special Meeting held in Akure.

According to a release by the Institution’s registrar ,Mr Richard Arifalo , Professor Oladiji came top following a due process in line with extant regulations governing appointment of Vice Chancellors of Universities domiciled with the Governing Council of Universites.

A letter of appointment signed by Ambassador Igali, says Oladiji’s appointment takes effect from Tuesday May 24, 2022 for a single term of five years.

Professor Oladiji succeeds Professor Joseph Fuwape, whose term ends on Monday, 23rd May, 2022.

The new VC born on 27th April, 1968 has over 29 years of continuous service in the university system.

She is also Member of Professional Bodies such as the West Africa Research and Innovation Management , American Society of Nutrition, Organization for Women in Science for Developing World , Science Association of Nigeria and Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology.

Professor Oladiji is married with children.

Vice-Chancellor, first technical university, Ibadan, Professor Ayobami Salami says the university has produced learned students who are being sourced by reputable organizations.

Professor Salami stated this while speaking at a press conference heralding activities lined up for the first convocation ceremony of the university holding tomorrow.

The Technical University Vice-Chancellor expressed satisfaction with the ability of the graduating students considering the institution’s drive of building the brains and training them on vocational skills.

While highlighting the achievements of the institution within its five years of existence, Professor Salami said Technical University Ibadan has been ranked 7th best state University and 27th among all universities by the National University Commission, NUC.

The Tech-U V.C who said 12 out of the 63 first set of graduates had first-class while 24 had second class upper explained that, the University has increased its student base from sixty-nine at the inception to about nine hundred students.

Professor Salami later took journalists round on a facility tour of two newly built hostels, two 250 capacity classrooms, well-equipped laboratories and two broadcast studios.

Among the activities lined up for the maiden convocation include; a stage play, convocation lecture and conferment of honorary doctoral degrees on some distinguished Nigerians.

The 13th Vice Chancellor of the University of  Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale have been told live up to the expectations of the people as he steers the affairs of the institution for the next five years.

The Pastor In Charge of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Oyo Province 2, Pastor Ayodeji Arije gave the admonition during the thanksgiving service of the new Vice Chancellor.

Pastor Arije who said Professor Adebowale is a pastor in the church explained that the expectations of people are higher when a pastor is made to assume the position of authority, 

The cleric stressed the need for Professor Adebowale to start small and progress in his achivement.

In his testimony, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale said the pressures of uncertainties almost influenced his withdrawal but for God’s sustaining power.

The Vice Chancellor who said he would not have emerged  as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan if linkage with high profile Nigerians and appointment strategies were considered as appointment parametres said God had been instrumental to his new position.

Aside top ministers of Oyo province in the Redeemed Christian Church of God and management of the University of Ibadan that graced the event, the thanksgiving service also featured special prayers for the institution and the new Vice Chancellor.

The thanksgiving service climaxed at the Trenchard hall of the institution with the entertainment of dignitaries and members of staff.

Nigerian researchers have been encouraged to invest research grants in valuable works that will benefit the nation and stand the test of time rather than divert the resources for personal use.

A don with University of Edinburgh, Dr. Akin Iwilade gave the advise at a workshop for researchers on proposal writing for research grants held at the Senate building of Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago- Iwoye, Ogun state.
The workshop organised by the Oba Sikiru Adetona professorial chair in good governance of the institution had in attendance academic staff and representatives of the institution’s management.

According to Dr. Akin Iwilade, research grants are not meant to enrich the researchers noting that many research works failed to win grants due to inflated budgets.He explained that researchers must understand the dynamics involved in accessing international grants which include good proposals build around team work, good profile, sincere budgeting and meeting the aspirations of the funders.

Dr. Iwilade who expressed delight on the exploits of researchers from Nigeria amongst their contemporaries seeking grants from funders in the United Kingdom advised Nigeria researchers not to rest on their oars.

The Vice Chancellor, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Professor Ganiyu Olatunde represented by the deputy vice Chancellor Academic, Professor Deji Agboola said capacity building for staff of the institution was one of the focus of the university administration noting that the school expect its staff to win up to fifty grants in the next twelve months with the training.

The Chairman, board of trustees of Oba Sikiru Adetona professorial chair, Professor Akinsola Agagu while speaking said their mission was to improve on good governance in the country through açcess and judicious use of international grants.

The workshop on proposal writing for research grants is expected to dovetail to the faculties and the departments at the University.

Members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising the Non Academic staff Union (NASU), senior staff association of Nigerian universities (SSANU), University of Ibadan chapter has called on the Federal Government to review the processes leading to the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI).

The Chairman of the committee, who is also the Chairman SSANU, Mr Wale Akinremi made the plea while briefing news men on the disposition of the union on the process for the new Vice Chancellor of the University. 

The union lamented the indebtedness, infrastructural decay,  mismanagement of human and financial resources of the institution, saying the mismanagement of the funds has put to question, how the incoming VC tend to run the affairs of the University amidst the scarce resources.

The union decried the alleged appointment of unqualified and underperforming personnel to manage the University affairs, Stress the need for paradigm shift and accountability. 

The UI -JAC Chairman said his members would resist the reemergence of divisive management staffs in the University so as to restore the lost glory of the University.

It would be recalled that members of the Non- Academic staff union had last week Wednesday staged protest during the University’s council meeting on the appointment of new Vice Chancellor.

The process of selecting a new Vice Chancellor for the University of Ibadan has been suspended.

The decision followed protest by some staff unions of the institution who alleged that the entire process was not transparent.

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria universities, SSANU, and Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, University of Ibadan Chapter had earlier shut down all activities in the institution in protest against the alleged plot to impose a vice chancellor on them.

The members of the associations in their numbers locked up the main entrance of the institution, shut all doors and put out electricity.

Justifying the action, Chairman, SSANU, Mr Wale Akinremi alleged that the vice-chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka and his team were determined to manipulate the process of selecting a new vice-chancellor for personal gains.

He said the unions had written petitions to the university council about two years ago and had not gotten any response till date.

Mr Akinremi said the unions were convinced that the process was corrupt, hence the need for the protest.

On his part, Chairman, College of Medicine, NASU, Mr Akinlade Akinlolu said the protest was to repel oppression and imposition stating that the unions would not sheath its sword until all the election processes were started afresh.

After hours of protest, Chairman of the University’s council, Dr Joshua Waklek who had been in Senate Building for hours announced that the process had been suspended.

Dr Waklek said the council would subsequently meet with the union leaders on the way forward.

Crisis had rocked the institution over the process of electing a new vice-chancellor.

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, FUNAAB, Abeokuta, Professor Kolawole Salako has renewed the call on governments at all levels to pay urgent attention to agriculture in view of the dwindling in the prices of oil at the global market.

Professor Salako made the call while handing over some agricultural products of the institution to the Ogun State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Abeokuta.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that an agriculture-based economy will assist in solving the problems of high unemployment, rising inflation, wide income inequality, high poverty level and the high level of insecurity facing the nation.

Professor Salako warned that for a country like Nigeria that had over the years relied almost entirely on oil to fund its economy, the implications of the sharp fall in the price of crude oil occasioned by the effects of Coronavirus are dire.

He said the current government needed to aggressively focus on food production and adopt the farming settlements of the 1950s.

The don who noted that the institution had commenced intensive production of cassava, rice and livestock in readiness for the post-Covid-19 situation said the revival of the farm settlements across the country was important at this period of time.

Professor Salako said the distribution of the food items to journalists in the state was part of the efforts of the institution to cushion the effect of the global pandemic on members of the pen profession.

Similarly, the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Mrs. Alaba Lawson also donated nose masks to Union.

Mrs Lawson said nose masks was part of her efforts to support the vulnerable and the media practitioners who may be exposed to danger while discharging their duty. 

Receiving the items, the NUJ caretaker chairman, Mrs. Omolola Adeyinka thanked the donors for their gesture and implored other well-meaning individuals to emulate FUNAAB and Iyalode Lawson in reaching out to journalists.

Policymakers at national and international levels need to relate with universities to ensure that research works carried out on national development are implemented to ensure even development.

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, FUOYE, Professor Kayode Soremekun stated this in a chat with Radio Nigeria in Oye-Ekiti.

Professor Soremekun that such a relationship would assist policymakers to harness potentials in the education sector by making use of solutions and suggestions of great researches to influence meaningful change and virile society.

Professor Soremekun explained that since University was not a Policymaking platform, there was the need for government and Policymakers at all levels to relate with tertiary institutions on the need to make use of findings of research works to contribute to the society.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that there were possible solutions to the current challenges affecting the sectors of the economy and lack of harmonious relationship among some religious groups globally.

Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, Professor Kolawole Salako wants the restoration of the institution’s College of Management Sciences for knowledge development in the society.

The Vice-Chancellor made this known at the University Senate while addressing newsmen as part of the Twenty Seventh Convocation of the institution.

Professor Salako explained that agriculture accommodates all disciplines known to man and stated that the institution is a multidisciplinary school, hence the need to restore the management courses.

The Vice-Chancellor said the 27th Convocation of the institution would graduate three thousand, two hundred twenty-six.

Professor Salako hinted that some of the twenty-three projects embarked upon by the present administration of the university are to be inaugurated as part of the convocation ceremony.

The Vice-Chancellor, alongside the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Professor Bolanle Akeredolu-Ale and other top management members of the university also inspected some agriculture innovations and products of the students and staff of the institution at the exhibition ground.

Students have been challenged to be up and doing in their studies to make them employers of labour in the future.

Vice Chancellor, Bowen University, Professor Joshua Ogunwole made the call at the 14th convocation of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State.

Professor Ogunwole who noted that fifty three students out of overall eight hundred and sixty-eight students bagged first class in various disciplines said, the feat was achievable through the schools discipline and dedication of their students to their academics.

In a convocation lecture, president, African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina stressed the need for the nation to focus more on entrepreneurial education for enhanced national economy.

The convocation ceremony also featured commissioning of hostel facility.

Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, is to kick start deployment of a super
dual equatorial radar network system to aid the study of atmospheric
physics and monitor equator.

Vice Chancellor Bowen University, Professor Joshua Ogunwole who
disclosed this at the press conference for the 14th convocation of the
institution said the ten million U.S dollars project, when flagged
off would be the first in Africa.

The Vice Chancellor while explaining that Bowen University had established collaboration with the University of Virginia, United States of America and National Space Research and Development Agency on the project, hinted that the partnership would further enhance research in space science across the world.

Professor Ogunwole explained that the program would help in solving hitches associated with telephone network across the country.

learning was accessible to students.

The Vice Chancellor while highlighting activities of the 14th convocation which will be climax on Saturday said an honour of Doctor of Entrepreneurship would be conferred on the president of African Development Bank, AfDB, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina.

The first Professor of Sports in Africa, Professor Michael Ajisafe will on Thursday, 11th of July, be the guest on July 2019 edition of  Oyo SWAN SEAT.

Professor Ajisafe, who is also the Vice Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, ABUAD, will deliver a lecture entitled “Sports:Tools for Youth Empowerment towards National development”.

According to a statement by the Acting Secretary of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Oyo State Chapter, Olusegun Adesoji, the lecture will come up at Dapo Aderogba Hall of the NUJ Press Center, Iyaganku, Ibadan at 11 o clock in the morning.

The statement notes that Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Professor Sulyman Abdulkareem is the Distinguished Guest of Honour, while Chairman, Ilaji Hotel and Sports Resorts, Engineer Dotun Sanusi, is the Chairman of the lecture while the host of the programme is the Oyo SWAN Chairman, Olaolu Fawole.

It also adds that stakeholders in the sports sector across Oyo State  are expected to grace the occasion, which is part of ways to improve sports administration, promotion and development.
