The national sports festival has been described as a veritable tool for uniting the nation.
President Muhammadu Buhari stated this during the opening ceremony of the Edo 2020 national sports festival held at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Edo, Benin city.
Represented by the minister of youths and sports, Mr Sunday Dare, President Buhari said the festival creates an avenue for youths from all over Nigeria to interact and compete in various sports.
While speaking on talent discovery, the President said the national sports festival represented a platform that picks great stars that would represent the country in the global sporting arena.
Edo state governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki who appreciated the federal government for making the sports festival a reality, admonished Nigerians to rise above challenges that threatened its unity and survival.
The chairman, Local organizing committee who is also the deputy governor of Edo state, Mr Shuaibu Phillips called on the athletes to be of good character.
Highlights of the event included fireworks and songs performed by Timi Dakolo and Fireboy DML.
