Three gunmen have been killed by the combined team of policemen and local hunters in a gun battle at a checkpoint in Osun State. 

Radio Nigeria gathered that the incident occurred at Osunjela area in Atakunmosa West Local Government Area of Osun State around 3:48 PM on Wednesday. 

It was learnt that the gunmen numbering about five who were armed with pump action assault rifles and dane guns, ran into the checkpoint, where they attempted to escape. 

A security source told our correspondent that the combined efforts by the special squad of the Osun State Commissioner of Police named “Prompt Response Unit”, PRU, and the hunters under the aegis of The Hunters Group of Nigeria engaged the gunmen. 

The source who refused to be named explained that the police ordered them to surrender their weapons but they refused and started to attack the operatives, leading to gun duel, where three of them were killed while others escaped. 

The spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola confirmed the incident that three of the gunmen were killed, while she promised to get back to Radio Nigeria on the circumstances surrounding the incident. 

Similarly, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun Command, Mr. Daniel Adigun confirmed that the incident occurred around 3:45 PM.
