Governments at all level have been reminded of the need to enforce policies that would enhance the well-being and the protection of elderly persons against abuses.

The coordinator of an elders platform, non- governmental organization, NGO, the Reverend Abiodun Solesi made the call while featuring on Paramount FM Programme, Gbagede Oro, as part of activities to mark this year’s United Nations International Day of Older Persons in Abeokuta.

The reverend Solesi who identified loneliness, dementia, lack of recognition, financial limitations and psychological torture as some of the challenges confronting older persons, called for collaborative efforts towards ensuring their adequate care.

The coordinator also urged media houses to disseminate information that would curb negative cultural beliefs against the elders and educate the people on the need to take care of the elders in the society.

He further solicited the support of governments and other well-meaning Nigerians to promote provision of medical services and financial assistance to indigent elders who could not provide for themselves.

Dr Solesi equally called for the establishment of health and welfare centres for the elders as well as organize social activities to trigger their memories and make them relevant in the society.
