As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark Bicycle Day set aside by the United Nations, Nigerians have been urged to engage in bicycle riding as a good form of exercise and to reduce vehicles on the highways.

Osun State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Corps Commander John Okpe made the call in an interview shortly after a bicycle ride by some corps and residents from the state FRSC secretariat base, Osogbo to Owode Ede.

Corps Commander Okpe, who said most people have neglected bicycle riding contrary to what was obtained in the past, explained that it helps to boost the health system of individuals.

The Osun FRSC boss also called on the state government to ensure that old and new roads possess bicycle tracks for easy and safe access for the riders.

He cautioned motorists against speeding, overloading, route violation, use of phones while driving, and other infractions.

“Today we are marking the United Nations the World Bicycle Day, which like you know is marked throughout the world and FRSC over the years have keyed into this program to educate our citizens, especially in Osun State and this is intended to reduce vehicles on the highways”

“That is why the FRSC is campaigning and engaging with the government of Osun State to ensure that roads that they would continue to build and the old ones they should introduce bicycle tracks where is an only bicycle that will ride on those tracks, this will attract more people to riding. “
