The Ogun State Government has introduced measures to combat illegal veterinary operations and enforce necessary rules to prevent the sales of contaminated meat to the people.

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Dotun Sorunke who made this known in Abeokuta said the government was concerned about the rise in the number of outlets offering illegal veterinary services in the state.

Dr. Sorunke pointed out that the government had issued a 14 – day ultimatum compelling all providers of animal care services across the state to register with the department of veterinary services in the ministry before the 26th of this month or risk the closure of their businesses.

He explained that the directive would affect private veterinary practitioners, veterinary pharmaceutical outfits, slaughter slabs, live bird markets, and cattle markets in accordance with the Animal Disease Control Act of 2022.

The Permanent Secretary emphasized that the government would also sanction distributors of fake animal drugs, operators of unhygienic slaughter slabs, and those engaging in the sales of contaminated meats capable of compromising the people’s health.
