World music day is basically to encourage musicians to perform and to celebrate the music that falls into various categories namely jazz, rock, hip hop, classical, gospel, juju, Apala, Afrobeat, rhythm, blues, others are, Fuji, reggae, disco, drum, and bass.

The day, according to history originated in France as a music festival and was later inherited by over one hundred and twenty countries due to its popularity.

In Nigeria, how popular is world music day? Some music lovers in Akure, Ondo State spoke about their awareness of the day

The respondents described music as pleasing and interesting sounds.

A music lover, Alhaji Soliu-Olu Owamoyo, and a music teacher, Ayooluwa Agunloko however expressed concern over the kinds of music produced by new generation singers saying they lacked depth when compared with the music of Yester years which taught morals among other virtues.

A gospel musician, Lady Evangelist Adelegan Olawole-Taiwo said the music industry in Nigeria required timely reformation to bring sanity into the activities of young singers who most times produce music in vulgar languages.

Lady Evangelist Olawole-Taiwo traced the imbalances to moral decadence and poor economy, therefore, suggested improved economy and censorship by relevant authorities as part of the ways to ensure that only music that would benefit the society was dished out.
