All persons admitted at the Ogun State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, following the recent chemical inhalation incident in some schools within the town, have recovered and been discharged.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, made this known during an engagement with parents, guardians and residents at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School.
She explained that the victims of the unknown gaseous substance were discharged having received medical attention and been certified fit by health personnel.
Dr Coker stated that the state government would deploy ambulance crews to all wards in Ijebu-Ode to ensure prompt emergency response.
According to her, each ambulance would be staffed with a driver and a paramedic to respond swiftly to incidents in the area.
Dr. Coker also noted that government had established a medical response protocol to ensure that any patient taken to secondary health facilities and requiring advanced care would be immediately transferred to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital.
The commissioner urged residents not to panic in the event of any unusual occurrence, advising them to make use of the ministry’s emergency response line.
She said that district surveillance nurses, nursing officers and rapid response personnel had already been deployed to the community, while the ministry had also informed the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control about the incident.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ola Oresanya, had hinted that gas analysers had been installed around affected schools to monitor air quality in the environment
Recalled that more than one hundred students and teachers from various schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, were reportedly undergoing medical treatment following alleged exposure to harmful chemical odour in the town.
The incident had caused panic among residents while emergency responders evacuated affected students to the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode and other private medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Some of the schools affected were Our Lady of Apostles Girls School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, Adeola Odutola Secondary School as well as St. Anthony School alongside many private schools within the area.
