Monarch Wants Review of Chieftaincy Law

A traditional ruler in Osun State, the AkireIle of Ikire-Ile in OlaOluwa Local Government Area of Osun State, Oba Abdulazeez Adebamiji has called on Houses of Assembly to review the various chieftaincy Laws to remove the control of traditional institutions from the purview of Local Government.

Speaking at a public lecture organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists to mark the 2023 NUJ Press Week in Osogbo, Oba Adebamiji described the current arrangement as an aberration.

The monarch said keeping the traditional institution under the purview of local government belittled the foremost institution and rubbed it of its fundamental contributions to good governance, security and peaceful coexistence of the state.

Oba Adebamiji challenged the States Houses of Assembly to urgently amend the Law while he called on the National Assembly to give constitutional role to traditional rulers.

The public lecture with the theme “Good Governance in the Face of Economic Reforms and Political Stability in Nigeria” was delivered by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr Adewale Egbedun.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Faruk Abass, the Osun Assembly Speaker, Mr Wale Egbedun identified oversight functions of the legislature as a key ingredient to promote good governance, transparency, accountability, social justice and political stability. 

Mr Egbedun maintained that only an effective Legislature could ensure good governance by keeping the executive on its toes in meeting the needs of the people at all times.

He said “Also, I believe that legislative effectiveness will promote political stability brings about economic growth and development in the state . According to him , the need for journalists to support the legislative arm of government in their reportorial will go a long way in educating the populace on most of the legislative functions”.

 In his address of welcome, Comrade Wasiu Ajadosu, Osun NUJ Chairman, said Nigeria was in a trial period due to the high rate of unemployment and the continuous challenge of the economy.

Mr Ajadosu called on governments to find effective measures to address the challenges confronting the nation’s economy.
