A “New You” is Possible in 2024

By Maxwell Oyekunle

Happy New Year, and welcome to 2024!

Do you know that the emergence or evolution of a “new, improved, and better” you is possible?

Do you know you can improve and be better in all areas of life where you have been struggling in the past?

All you need is a “Resolution to be better in the new year” or should I say you say a “new year resolution”.

A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, in which a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behaviour, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their behaviour at the beginning of a calendar year.

This is a very common practice across the world and in Nigeria too.

A lot of people make resolutions every New Year but many abandon it a few weeks into the year.

This is usually because of procrastination, lack of commitment and inconsistency among other factors.

Making resolutions alone is not always enough, to make a progress of note; there must be a plan and structure for sustainable inspiration, measurement, and accountability.

Overcoming procrastination and successfully following through on resolutions can be challenging but is certainly achievable.

Here are some tips to help you deal with procrastination and stay committed to your resolutions in 2024:

Set Realistic Goals:

–       Ensure your resolutions are S.M.A.R.T. that is: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

–       Realistic goals are more manageable and less likely to lead to procrastination.

Break It Down:

–       Divide larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks.

–       This makes the process less overwhelming and allows you to focus on one step at a time.

Prioritize Tasks:

–       Identify and prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines.

–       Tackling high-priority tasks first can create a sense of accomplishment and motivation.

Create a Schedule:

–       Develop a daily or weekly schedule that includes dedicated time for working on your resolutions.

–       Having a routine helps establish consistency.

Remove Distractions:

–       Identify and minimize distractions in your environment.

–       Turn off unnecessary notifications and create a workspace conducive to productivity.

Visualize Success:

–       Envision the positive outcomes of achieving your resolutions.

–       Visualizing success can motivate you to take action and overcome procrastination.

–       Have an idea of what success looks like for you.

Build Habits Gradually:

–       Focus on building new habits gradually rather than trying to make drastic changes overnight.

–       Small, consistent steps lead to lasting habits.

Accountability Partner:

–       Share your resolutions with a friend, family member, or colleague who can provide support and hold you accountable.

–       Plan regular check-ins to keep you motivated.

Celebrate Progress:

–       Acknowledge and celebrate small victories along the way.

–       Recognizing your progress reinforces positive behaviour.

–       Celebrating small wins helps you enjoy the journey to your target.

Learn from Setbacks:

–       Understand that setbacks are a normal part of the process.

–       Instead of seeing them as failures, view them as opportunities to learn and adjust your approach.

Stay Flexible:

–       Be open to adjusting your resolutions or strategies if needed.

–       Life is dynamic, and flexibility can help you navigate unexpected challenges.

–       The fact that someone else successfully used a strategy does not mean that is the only way to do such things.

Self-Compassion:

–       Be kind to yourself.

–       If you face setbacks or temporary lapses in motivation, practice self-compassion and refocus on your goals.

Conclusion:

Always remember that forming new habits and achieving resolutions is a journey that requires patience and persistence.

Stay committed, stay positive, and embrace the opportunity for growth and improvement in this New Year. Happy New Year once again, have a very productive 2024!
