Nigerians have been urged to explore the deployment of digital media creatively to accelerate national development.
Head of Department of Mass Communication, Lead City University, Ibadan, Dr Bayo Busari made the call while delivering a lecture organized by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN Ibadan Chapel of the Nigeria Union Of Journalists, NUJ, as part of activities marking the 2024 Press Week.
Dr Busari who spoke on the topic: Effects of Digital Media on National Development noted that successive governments had achieved notable progress in programmes such as the Accecelated Rural Development Programme and the War Against Indiscipline.
The guest lecturer explained that the existence of digital media would help boost government programmes and policies, thereby promoting national development.
Speaking on early exposure of young minds to digital media leading to overload in academic content, Dr Busari said learning should be a serial and gradual process for good educational development.
He urged authorities in the Ministry of Education to review and monitor school curricula and include social media usage in adult literacy curricula to achieve the desired development.
In a remark the Zonal Director, Federal Radio Corporation Of Nigeria, FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Dominic Mokikan while congratulating members of the union on the occasion of this year’s Press Week, tasked Nigerians to develop initiatives that would engender the growth of country.
In a goodwill message, the Deputy Director of News and Current Affairs Directorate, FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Adewumi Faniran advised members of the union to regularly sharpen their professional skills and adapt to digitization to remain relevant in the industry.
Earlier in a remark, the chairman of NUJ FRCN Ibadan Chapel, Mr Oluwakayode Banjo said since the world is transiting to the digital age, every individual needed to embrace it.
The Press Week continues on Tuesday with a visit to the National Museum of Unity, Aleshinloye and Kayrom Lee Fitness and Gym Center, Liberty Stadium, Ibadan.
