2027: Opposition Parties Push for Unified Presidential Candidate

By Iyabo Adebisi

Opposition political parties in Nigeria say they will present a single, consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

This follows a national summit held in Ibadan, aimed at strengthening efforts to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

At the meeting, party leaders also resolved to resist what they described as attempts to impose a one-party system on the country.

These resolutions were contained in a communiqué signed by party chairmen and read by a factional leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The opposition parties pledged to defend multi-party democracy and rejected alleged moves to impose President Bola Tinubu as the sole candidate in the 2027 elections.

They reaffirmed their commitment to fully participate in the elections, including fielding candidates at all levels, while working towards a unified presidential flagbearer.

The summit also called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, accusing him of bias in favour of the ruling party.

Earlier, the host governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, warned against what he described as a growing concentration of political power in the country.

Governor Makinde said democracy depends on a viable opposition, noting that the dominance of one party risks weakening the democratic system.
