OGHA Advocates Establishment of Functional Sick Bays in Public Schools

By Omolara Adasofunjo

Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the urgent establishment of functional sick bays in all public primary and secondary schools across the state.

The resolution, sponsored by Mr Damilola Soneye, was adopted after debate and supported through a motion seconded by the Majority Leader, Mr Yusuf Sherrif.

Leading the debate, Mr Soneye said the establishment of sick bays would help provide first aid, manage medical emergencies, and aid early diagnosis to prevent health risks among students.

Supporting the motion, lawmakers, including Mr Olakunle Sobukanla, Mr Yusuf Amosun, Dr Babatunde Tella, Mr Damilare Bello, Mr Waliu Owode, Mr Oluseun Adesanya, and Mr Lukman Adeleye emphasised the need for such facilities to be managed by qualified health personnel.

The Assembly also urged the Ministries of Health and Education, Science and Technology to develop a standardised school health policy while urging private schools to establish first aid units and health clinics.

They further recommended the employment of graduates from the Ogun State Polytechnic of Health Technology, Ilese.

In another development, the Assembly has summoned the State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Akinsanya, and representatives of Craneburg Construction Company over persistent traffic congestion along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, particularly at the Toll Gate and Papalanto–Ewekoro axis, due to ongoing construction activities.

The Speaker, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, issued the invitation following presentations by former Speaker, Mr Olakunle Oluomo, and the Majority Leader, Mr Yusuf Sherrif, during plenary in Abeokuta.

The lawmakers decried the severe gridlock and poor condition of some rehabilitated sections of the road, noting that the situation has worsened despite efforts by the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE.

The Assembly directed the Commissioner and the contractor to appear before the House on Tuesday, 28th October, by 2:00 p.m. for an interface on the matter.
