It’s all thanks to the fact that beads (and cuffs! and accessories in general!) come in so many shapes, colours, and styles.

Ghana Weaving Style with Fringe and Beads

Here is another classy all-back Ghana weaving that lets you have fun. The fringe is another unique way to make it stand out.

Zigzag Ghana Weaving

The zig-zag is a really excellent choice for the all-back braid. It has recently taken over the casual cornrow braid, and we can see why.

Shuku Stitch Ghana Weaving

Shuku is one of the Ghana weaving styles that have been around for a very long time. When we talk about Ghana weaving, shuku comes to mind and hairstylists have gotten more creative with it. This is a simple and exciting combination of tribal braid and Ghana weaving.

Dija Weaving

Dija weaving usually involves two sides’ plaited braids, but it gets more fun by adding side cornrow braids. This is a cool way to step up your Ghana weaving game.

Half up Cornrow Ghana Weaving

We love this exotic Ghana weaving braid. It tends to take time if you want it as long as it is above but it’s a style worth trying.

Artistic Ghana Braid

Artistic braid is another Ghana weaving braid that might require you to sit for a long amount of time but it’s a hairstyle worth it.

Center Parting Braid

There is no doubt that this is an iconic Ghana-weaving hairstyle we would love to see more of.

High And Low Updo Curly Weaving

It’s all about the swirly curls with this hairstyle, and it provides you with a playful and bouncy look.

Veteran Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, has revealed some intimate details about her upbringing including how she almost went into prostitution.

Omotola recounted her childhood experience in a recent interview with Chude Jidenwo.

The mother of four revealed how her father passed away when she was 12 years old, adding it was a tragic incident that left her emotionless as she never grieved his death.

The actress further added that she was close to going into prostitution to survive because of the challenges she faced at a young age.

“I understand that I was his only child for a long time and my dad and I were very close, he was the manager of Lagos country club at the time, and many influential people come there and because of that, I started rolling with people of influence from a little age.

“When I was 13, they came to pick me up from school, I knew something was wrong and prayed that hope nothing has happened to my dad.

“When I got home, I realized my dad was dead, so going through that mental process, I didn’t know how to react and I didn’t know how I was feeling, I was just silent but now that I’m older, I think I really understand everything. So I just became emotionless and it has affected me till today.

“There is nothing anyone says to me that can move me, I am so confident in who I am and I don’t fear anyone. I don’t fear for my life, probably I would have become a prostitute today, I was very desperate to do anything and said I would rather sell my body than for anybody to tear my younger brother apart.”

On Sunday, January 15th, 2023, Nigerians woke up to the news of the death of veteran Actor and ethnomusicologist, Femi Ogunrombi, who for a short time played the role of Papa Ajasco in Wale Adenuga comedy series “Papa Ajasco and Company”.

A Nigerian, Husseini Shaibu, who broke the news on his twitter handle, said, “I have just been reliably informed that the , former Music Instructor with @NATIONALTROUPE and one time stand in for the ‘Papa Ajasco’ character on the popular @waleadenugaprod Comic Series ‘Papa Ajasco’ Mr. Femi Ogunrombi is dead! Journey well Sir,” and accompanied it with the picture of the deceased.

Late Femi Ogunrombi

Papa Ajasco , the fictional womanising bald-headed husband, who often beats his head when astonished, was one of the greatest comic characters in Nollywood history.

The role was initially played by Richard Abiodun Ayoyinka, the man whose picture was erroneously used by some media houses and social media platforms rather than that of Femi Ogunrombi who played the role for just two years.

Abiodun Ayoyinka

The reason according to Ogunrombi, many years ago, was due to the fact that lovers of the TV series were connected more with Ayoyinka, the original Cast.

Subsequently, Ogunrombi was asked by Wale Adenuga to forfeit the role to the original actor.

“It was in the interest of Wale Adenuga Productions Company that I left. I don’t feel bad about leaving, but the thing is that quite a number of viewers tended to be with the other guy, and, like I said before, they see me as an elitist Papa Ajasco. Also, considering the market target of the sponsors, they felt they were losing viewers and money, I was nicely told and I reasoned with them and left,” Ogunrombi said during his lifetime.

“He said he was happy to play the role during his time and was friends with Ayoyinka during and after his time as Papa Ajasco”.

Before taking up role of Papa Ajasco, Ogunrombi was an entho-musicologist who made his mark in creative activities both in drama and musical scenes, spanning more than 25 years. He was a recipient of many local and international awards, most notably in 1995 when he was awarded a gold plaque and a Diploma Certificate in Creative Composition in North Korea for performing a song in that language.

During his active years in the industry, Ogunrombi was passionate about creative art education for children in schools. He once said “I feel that if creative arts can be encouraged in schools, particularly government schools, our kids would be able to build a solid entertainment sector. We want to discover them early so as to train and guide them.”

Abiodun Ayoyinka, Original Cast of Papa Ajasco

Ayoyinka, while reacting to his picture that was erroneously used, said he is still alive and appreciated his fans for their concern.

Papa Ajasco and Company (formerly The Ajasco Family) is a Nigerian family television sitcom created by Wale Adenuga in 1996.

The show is a spin-off of a feature film of the same title produced by Wale Adenuga in 1984, which in turn is based on the comic Ikebe Super.

The story revolves
around the Ajasco family and their comedic interpretations to major societal issues. The main characters include womanising patriarch Papa Ajasco, his long-suffering wife Mama Ajasco, their mischievous son Bobo Ajasco, local playboy Boy Alinco, promiscuous gold-digger Miss Pepeiye, and illiterate Pa James and Pa Jimoh. At its prime, Papa Ajasco was widely considered to be Nigeria’s most watched comedy series, viewed weekly in twelve African countries.

Have you had one of those moments where all you crave is something that can’t be easily sourced? You just want it and if you can’t find it then you try to make your own version or recreate the memory you have about that particular food.

I have a craving for Ewa aganyin, (mashed beans and special sauce) Ewa aganyin is one of the most popular street foods eaten in Nigeria.

I remember waiting outside the house for the hawker so I can buy this special kind of beans.

I use to wonder why ewa aganyin is expensive but I got to appreciate it when I started making it myself.

Once you mash the beans, you will be left with almost nothing and the amount of oil that goes into making the stew is a lot.

Again, if you are making yours and you are able to source the right ingredients, make sure the ratio of your dried red bell pepper is higher than the dried bird’s eye chillies.

This helps to tone down the hotness.

I learnt something from a food seller, she upped her beans game by selling the aganyin sauce with her regular beans and this method pulled more crowds for her, she used a mixture of dried bell pepper, regular red bell pepper, dried eye chillies and lots of onions.

If you have any of these listed ingredients, use them and you would still get the original Togolese Ewa aganyin taste.

Ingredients

2-3 cups Beans, picked and dirt free

4 medium-size onions

100g crushed chillies, soaked in warm water for at least 3 hours, or overnight preferably

Palm oil, you will need a lot of this.

Salt

Seasoning

Recipe (Beans)

Both sauce and beans can be cooked simultaneously if you have more than one gas/electric burner and if not, just cook them separately

The mashed beans: Place a pot on medium heat, add rinsed beans, enough water to cook and add half of the chopped onions, and bring to boil until tender.

This might take a while, but quicker if you have a pressure cooking pot. Add water in between to avoid the beans drying out/ burning.

Add salt to taste at the tail of the cooking. Beans have to be really tender so as to be able to mash properly.

Once beans are tender, mash till almost smooth.

Whilst you are waiting on the beans to cook, start frying the sauce. Making the sauce requires a lot of patience and I mean a lot of it and be ready to use a lot of palm oil.

Kitchen note: I recommend you bleach a large amount of oil and set it aside before cooking. Add to the stew as required once you feel the need for it.

The sauce tends to soak up the palm oil so it is advisable you cook it on low heat.

Recipe (Ewa Agoyin sauce)

Drain soaked crushed chillies and blend with 3 onions to a purée. (Add a little bit of water when blending)

Place a clean/dry pan on medium-high heat, pour in palm oil and bleach, add the half-chopped onions and continue frying till the onion is brown but not burnt.  (Keep your kitchen well-ventilated during this process)

Add blended pepper and cook on low heat, once the pepper mixture starts changing colour from bright red to brownish, add salt and seasoning to taste.

Don’t worry if it seems the sauce is soaking up the oil; add more palm oil if needed but not water and always stir in between.

You need to keep an eye on the sauce so it doesn’t burn too much.

Despite cooking on low heat I still needed to change my pot as you can see in the pictures.

I did so, as I didn’t want the burnt bit to affect the taste of the sauce.

Continue to cook on low heat till oil floats on the top.

In some areas of the country, especially the South, sweet potatoes make regular appearances at the end of the meal, yet for many of us elsewhere, it’s a surprise to encounter them in dessert form.

But they are called sweet potatoes for a reason!

This comforting, pretty and very simple pie makes a nice alternative to the more traditional pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.

It’s made even easier if you take the shortcut of using a refrigerated crust — one of the best inventions ever, in this casual pie maker’s opinion. But if you have a pie crust recipe you like, please feel free to use it here.

The best sweet potatoes are the small to medium ones, which are sweet and creamy.

Larger ones tend to be starchier. They should be firm and free of bruises or breaks, and their skin should be smooth.

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of the antioxidant beta carotene (choose ones with darker skins for more of it), and also contain high levels of Vitamin C and potassium.

Making the filling of this pie is simple, once you bake and mash the sweet potatoes.

Oh and if you are lucky to have any leftovers, be sure to tuck a piece in a secret spot in the fridge.

Ingredients of Sweet Potato Pie

10 medium sweet potatoes

1 refrigerated pie crust for a 9-inch pie

3 large eggs

Grated zest of 1 orange

⅔ cup sugar

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground ginger

½ teaspoon salt

150-gram Condensed Milk

1 tbsp Sugar

To decorate Marshmallows

Sweetened Whipped Cream to serve

For the Pie Dough:

  • 350+ extra grams of All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 275 gram Butter
  • 5 tbsp Ice cold water
  • 1 Egg, mashed

How to Make Sweet Potato Pie

Bake the yams until they have softened completely – they should be extremely tender. Cool, discard the skin and then blend the flesh into a paste.

Mix the paste with the remaining ingredients and whisk well until everything is smooth and perfectly blended – you don’t want any lumpy bits in your filling.

Add the filling to your crust and bake(about 50 minutes to 1 hour). Make sure to let it cool, then place it in the fridge overnight.

For the Pie Dough:

Preheat the oven to 350° F. Prick the sweet potatoes in several places with a fork, and bake them right on the rack for 1 1/2 hours, until very soft. Leave the oven on.

Remove and cool the potatoes until they are just slightly warm, then peel the skins off, and puree in a food processor or blender, or pass them through a ricer, and place in a large bowl.

You should have about 1 ¼ to 1 ½ cups puree.

Unroll the prepared pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate.

Attractively crimp the edges of the crust. (Or if you’ve purchased a pre-made pie crust already in the pan, skip this step).

For the filling, in a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and orange zest. Whisk in the pureed sweet potatoes, and then add the sugar, cinnamon, ginger and salt, and whisk into the sweet potato mixture until blended.

Slowly whisk in the cream until well combined. Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust.

Bake the pie for about 50 to 60 minutes, until the filling is set.

You can test this by inserting a sharp knife near the center; when it comes out clean, the pie is done.

The pie will be a bit puffed up when it comes out of the oven and then sink slightly as it cools.

You can even make a wonderful criss-cross lattice design if you prefer.

Cool the pie completely on a wire rack.

You can serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

The Lagos State Police Command on Saturday said the autopsy conducted on the corpse of Ifeanyi Adeleke, son of Davido and his fiancée, Chioma Rowland, revealed that he died as a result of drowning.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development.

Hundeyin said, “Autopsy has been concluded. It confirms the boy (Ifeanyi) drowned.”

According to reports there were indications that the police might conduct an autopsy to determine whether Ifeanyi died as a result of drowning in a swimming pool at his father’s residence in the Banana Island area of Lagos State.

Reports say that out of the eight domestic workers interrogated by the police in connection with Ifeanyi’s death, the cook and nanny, whose job was to cater for the wellbeing of the three-year-old boy, had been detained for reasons including the failure to uphold the duty of care of the minor.

As of the time of filing this report, the nanny and cook were said to still be in detention.
