The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Prince Adewale Egbedun, has dismissed allegations by the All Progressives Congress, APC, that the legislature undermined local government autonomy with the passage of the Local Government Amendment No. 2 Bill, 2026.

Prince Egbedun, in a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Olamide Tiamiyu, described the APC’s claims as unfounded and driven by desperation.

He maintained that the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria does not invalidate the constitutional authority of state legislatures over local government administration.

“The Supreme Court judgement does not erase Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution. That section expressly empowers state Houses of Assembly to make laws for the proper administration of local governments. Autonomy does not translate into absence of legislative oversight,” the statement said.

Prince Egbedun explained that the amendment seeks to promote transparency and prevent administrative lapses in the management of public funds at the grassroots, not to take over local government finances.

“We have the mandate of the people of Osun State to legislate. That responsibility cannot and will not be surrendered because of partisan pressure. Our duty is to ensure peace, order and good governance, including strengthening accountability mechanisms where necessary,” he said.

The Speaker described the APC’s condemnation of the bill as premature, adding that the opposition failed to examine the provisions of the amendment before issuing its statement.

He urged the party to exercise restraint, study the contents of the law thoroughly and seek clarification from the House where necessary, rather than resort to public speculation.

The APC had earlier accused the Assembly of attempting to undermine a recent Supreme Court judgement granting autonomy to local governments.

The arraignment of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was on Wednesday stalled at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, after the defence failed to produce the defendant in court.

El-Rufai is facing a three-count charge brought against him by the Department of State Services, over alleged wiretapping of the phone of the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu.

At the hearing on Wednesday, Defence counsel, Oluwole Iyamu, told the court that his client was in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and could not be brought for arraignment.

Iyamu urged the court to adjourn the matter to enable his production, and pressed for the bail application to be heard, noting that the prosecution had indicated it would not oppose bail as the offences were bailable.

However, the prosecution, led by Oluwole Aladedoye, asked the court to defer the bail request, arguing that the defendant had not yet been arraigned.

In a brief ruling, Justice Joyce Abdumalik held that since the defendant had not been formally arraigned, the bail application was premature.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter to April 23, 2026, for arraignment.

The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, UNIOSUN, Professor Clement Adebooye, has refuted claims by Sally Tibbot Consulting that 250 university staff, including himself, are ghost workers.

Speaking at a news briefing on the main campus in Osogbo, he described the audit report from the 2023 state personnel verification exercise as “unprofessional, fraudulent, and misleading,” demanding a formal apology and threatening legal action.

Professor Adebooye emphasized that the university’s response is rooted in transparency, accountability, and truth, and is “apolitical, aimed solely at clarifying facts for the public.” He explained that the statewide verification exercise, conducted in May and June 2023, required UNIOSUN’s entire staff of 1,017 to report on a single day, 18 August 2023, at the State Secretariat, alongside employees from other agencies.

“The consultant’s personnel were grossly inadequate and unskilled to handle this multitude,” he said, adding that the firm lacked understanding of university operations and wrongly included staff on sabbatical, study leave, research leave, visiting lecturers, and those who had retired or resigned between 2022 and 2023.

Professor Adebooye reiterated that UNIOSUN operates a strict, law-abiding payroll system subject to statutory oversight and monthly verification.

Five people were killed in a series of avalanches in the Austrian Alps as heavy snowfall hit the region on Friday.

A 42-year-old German man, caught in an avalanche with his 16-year-old son, was among the victims, police said. The teenager was airlifted to hospital from the slope in Nauders near the Swiss-Italian border.

Three other skiers were killed in an avalanche near the popular St Anton resort, while a snowboarder died after being buried in the neighbouring Vorarlberg region.

Austria has now seen at least 21 avalanche-related deaths this winter, while dozens of fatalities have been recorded across the Alps.

The avalanche risk remains high in parts of Tyrol, meaning avalanches can be expected where two fatal avalanches occurred on Friday in off-piste areas.

Police told Austrian media the avalanche near St Anton am Arlberg, which killed three men, appeared to have been triggered by the skiers themselves.

Two were American and Polish nationals, public broadcaster ORF reported, while the third was a 21-year-old Austrian who died in hospital.

Two other men were recovered from the scene with injuries after a major operation involving four mountain rescue teams, three helicopters, as well as emergency services.

Elsewhere, a 53-year-old man died after being crushed by a snow plough in the northern city of Linz.

The vehicle slid down a set of stairs where the man had been clearing snow, ORF reported. He died at the scene.

The significant snowfall in the region also caused power outages and transport chaos on Friday, particularly in the south-east.

The Red Cross was deployed to help those stuck in traffic jams in the state of Styria, where a motoring organisation described the roads as “virtually inaccessible to private vehicles”.

Vienna International Airport temporarily closed in the morning, and afternoon services were “disrupted”.

The avalanche death toll in the Alps has been higher than usual this year, and includes three Britons killed in France’s La Grave earlier this month.

The Oyo State Police Command has said officers involved in an operation at The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic acted professionally and within established guidelines, following a video on X alleging misconduct.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Olayinka Ayanlade, said an internal review identified the officers in the footage and confirmed compliance with operational procedures.

He linked the police action to a January 7, 2026 cult clash on campus in which one student was shot dead.

He said operatives arrested another suspect who provided intelligence that led police, in collaboration with the institution’s management, to search certain hostels.

The command stated that the school had earlier petitioned for police intervention to forestall further violence.

It added that students cooperated during the hostel visit and that officers did not damage any property.

Police said they arrested three suspects and charged them to court, while releasing others after screening.

Authorities also dismissed claims that officers damaged a hostel ceiling, stating that available video evidence showed a student caused the damage.

The command warned against the spread of misinformation and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and the protection of lives and property.

His Imperial Majesty, Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja (Arusa I), has urged Muslims and Christians to use the ongoing fasting seasons of Ramadan and Lent to pray for the progress and unity of Nigeria.

The appeal was contained in a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Solomon Olugbemiga, to mark the simultaneous commencement of the Ramadan and Lenten fasting periods.

The monarch reminded adherents of both faiths that Ramadan and Lent are rooted in sober reflection, forgiveness, kindness, discipline, peaceful coexistence and spiritual renewal.

He described the overlap of the two sacred periods as a divine signal for unity and religious harmony.

“The convergence of Ramadan and Lenten periods is not a mere coincidence but a divine arrangement to show the world the need for unity, love, tolerance and mutual understanding among the faithful,” the royal father said.

Oba Ladoja stressed that fasting goes beyond abstaining from food and drink, urging worshippers to also shun hatred, indecent conduct and harmful speech.

He called on residents of Ibadan, the Yoruba race and Nigerians at large to seize the moment to pray for leaders and for the nation, particularly amid prevailing security and socio-economic challenges.

The first-class monarch expressed appreciation for the support he has received from religious leaders and faithful since his enthronement as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, and urged continued prayers for unity, peace, security and economic revival in Ibadanland and across the country.
