A lecturer at the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, Professor Afis Oladosu says majority of struggles branded as religious are less about God but for selfish interest.

Professor Oladosu, who is also the Dean Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, stated this at the Trenchard Hall while delivering the 489th Inaugural lecture of the institution.

He said a lot of conflicts being tagged as religious were actually less about the creed or faith and much more about gaining power and material prosperity.

“Spaces of conflicts around the world commonly branded as religious are actually less about God and more about the preservation of spaces of power and economic survival”.

Professor Oladosu identified promotion of peaceful relationships by government agencies among various ethnic and religious identities and communities as essential for development of the country.

He called on Ministries, Directorates and Agencies, MDAs of government to remove all policies and regulations that constitute infractions to the nation’s constitution especially those that have to do with freedom of religion.

“Is it because I am a Muslim? is being asked in the town, far away from the quietude of the gown. It is being asked in the Nigerian Immigration Office where Muslim women are constantly being told to remove their hijab as a precondition for the issuance of international passports.

Is it because I am a Muslim? was the question Amasa Firdaws asked when she was initially denied the chance to be called to bar simply because she wore Muslim Hijab “.

The don called for the expansion of African studies programme of  University of Ibadan to include Middle Eastern and North African Studies as this would enhance intra- African relationship.

“Indeed, the establishment of a program in Middle Eastern and North African Studies in this part of the world has become a desideratum. Such a program when established here in Ibadan would strengthen intra- African relations and enhance the status of our University as the primus interpares in the sub-saharan region”.

In a remark on the lecture, JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede said some individuals used multiple identities to pretend to be fighting religious cause.

The well attended lecture had in attendance other dignitaries including Oyo State Deputy Governor,  Engr Rauf Olaiyan, his wife, Professor Amdalat, Aare Musulumi  of  Yorubaland,  Edo and Delta, Alhaji Dawud Akinola and Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah of Southwest Nigeria, MUSWEN, Professor Muslih Yahya.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed by Muslims globally.
Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam while others among which are faith (shahada), prayer (salat), alms giving (zakat), fasting (sawm) and pilgrimage (Hajj).
Ramadan is the most significant month in the Islamic calendar and it is the month when the Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Mohammed in which Muslims are expected to fast for 29 to 30 days, depending on the sighting of the moon, in line with Islamic tradition.
During the period, Muslims also try to reconnect with their faith through prayers, reading of Quran and charitable giving, as well as rekindling relationships with friends and family.
Fasting is obligatory for Muslims except for people who are insane, minors, travelers, menstruating women, expectant and nursing mothers as well as old people.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women are expected to make up the missed days after Ramadan.
Last year, there was a total lockdown on religious activities to prevent the sprerad of ravaging corona virus pandemic.
Though there has been ease on religious activities Muslims should still continue to observe necessary protocols during this year, Ramadan as covid-19 is yet to be defeated.
Congregational prayers should continue unabated, observers should ensure that they give space from one another as some mosque management have indicated the praying point for earth Muslim to prevent congestion.
Public gatherings like Ramadan lectures should br avoided except when there are provision to control crowd and ensure physical distance while usage of nose masks should be made compulsory either at mosques or venue of such Ramadan lecture in line with covid-19 protocols.
Crowded gathering associated with if tar banquets which is breaking of fast, should be avoided and consider using individual pre-packaged boxes/servings of food. these can be organized by centralized entities and institutions, which should adhere to physical distancing throughout the whole period.
In alternative to social and public gatherings, which are discouraged, virtual platforms such as television, radio, digital, and social media could be employed to pass messages across to the Muslims during the holy month.
It is important to note that healthy diet and proper nutrition and hydration are vital during the month of Ramadan. People should eat a variety of fresh and unprocessed foods every day and drink plenty of water.
Ramadan is also the month in which Allah opens his doors of mercy, forgiveness and blessings.
So, Muslims should pray fervently to Allah to intervene and eliminate the covid-19 pandemic ravaging the world and intensify efforts in good deeds during the month.
As it is believed that Allah answer prayers with speed during this period as gates of paradise are often open while those for hell are closed, Muslim faithful should take upon themselves to always pray with passion.

Easter is a very significant date within Christendom which represents the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the tomb on the third day, after his crucifixion.

It is the fulfilled prophecy of the messiah who was to be persecuted, die for the sins of the world, and rise on the third day.

It symbolizes the opening of heaven with the gift of eternal life to everyone

However, Easter Monday is usually a day and holiday that follows Easter Sunday to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Jesus was said to have appeared to believers on Monday after his resurrection and taught his disciples what was expected of every believer and the need to operate a giving ministry.

Most western nations observe the holiday to visit recreation centers, families, orphanages and the poor around them.

Many Christians worldwide, especially the orthodox denominations celebrate Easter Monday with special church services including picnic and bazaar.

As the world remembers the gift of Jesus Christ to mankind during this period that corona virus ravages most countries of the world, it is high time every one rose to emulate the spirit of giving as taught by the Lord Jesus Christ.

With the economic situation in the country, extending the hand of love to the physically challenged, street children, the elderly and many more would go a long way in alleviating people’s sufferings

The message of Easter Monday is encouraging family bond; this will inspire individuals and the society to develop a culture of love and care for one another.

As most parts of the world are battling with the pandemic and relevant authorities are finding solution to curbing the spread, the season should be celebrated with a virtual gathering with family and friends and well wishers in compliance with covid-19 guidelines.

The time has come for everybody to rise up to serve humanity by showing love and compassion to one another just as god did without looking back, giving out his only begotten son, Jesus Christ to the world.

Jesus Christ died and live for the love of humanity therefore mankind should reciprocate his love by living peacefully with one another irrespective of tribe religion or political class

Similarly, it behoves on all and sundry to understand that there is unity in diversity, Nigerians should put in concerted efforts to live in harmony.

It is pertinent for government to do more on empowerment programmes that could ease the level of poverty in the society.

As the economic situation bites harder politicians should see the season as a period to support people and show them love as reflection of the season.

Showing God’s love to humanity begins with having a tender heart as demonstrated by the Lord Jesus while on earth.
