Nigerian House of Representatives on Tuesday adopted a motion moved by a member representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Shina Peller, seeking to compel the Federal Government to make budgetary provisions in the 2023 appropriation estimates for the revamping of Iyake Suspended Lake in Ado-Awaye, Iseyin local government, Oyo State.

In the motion titled “Need to Revamp the Iyake Suspended Lake at Ado-Awaye in Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State, Peller observed that Ado-Awaye Hill is a tourist destination that is under-utilized and neglected in spite of its several attractions like the Iyake Suspended Lake, Ishage Rock, Elephant Tree, Ese Awon Agba (footprints of the elders), Esekan Iku , Isata Hill and the Iya Alaro Lake.

In the same vein, he argued that tourism was a strong pillar of growth for Nigerian economy with a contribution of 3.20 percent to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Quoting the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), he added that tourism contributed about 2.70 percent of total employment in 2013 and that it was envisaged to rise by 6.1 percent per annum from 2014 to 2024.

Peller expressed concerns that the Iyake suspended Lake in Ado-Awaye, a very rare natural occurrence that has the potential of attracting tourists all over the world annually, had been abandoned.

He therefore prayed that the House resolves to:

(i.) Urge the Federal Government to make budgetary provisions in the 2023 Appropriation estimates to revamp the Iyake suspended Lake in Ado-Awaye;

(ii) Mandate the Committees on Culture, Tourism and Appropriation to ensure compliance.

The House overwhelmingly granted the prayers.

Iyake Suspended Lake is one of the two suspended lakes in the world. One is in Colorado, United States of America (USA), and the other is the amusing Iyake Lake situated in Ado-Awaye, Iseyin local government area of Oyo State. The Iyake lake never dries even in dry seasons, and the water level remains the same in raining seasons. Besides the lake, the mountain has other wonders that make it a fascinating destination and significant cultural heritage.

It would be recalled that in 2019, Peller, alongside his children, Sultan and Naomi Peller, had visited Iyake Lake whilst on a tour organised by the Iseyin Youth Development Group (IYDG).

During the tour, the Iseyin-born federal legislator had said, “Ado Hill is definitely a goldmine that has to be tapped into, and I’ll do everything within my capacity to make sure that we fully explore the great potential of Ado Hill, especially Iyake Suspended Lake, which is one of the only two suspended lakes we have in the world.”

The Crooked Forest is a grove of oddly-shaped pine trees located near the town of Gryfino, West Pomerania, Poland.

This grove of about 100 pines was planted in the village of Nowe Czarnowo around 1930.

Each pine tree bends sharply to the north, just above ground level, then curves back upright after a sideways excursion of three to nine feet (1–3 m).

The curved pines are enclosed by a surrounding forest of straight pine trees.

It is generally believed that some form of human tool or technique was used to make the trees grow or bend this way, but the method was never determined and remains a mystery to this day.

It has been speculated that the trees may have been deformed to create naturally curved timber for use in furniture or boat building.

Others surmise that a snowstorm could have bent the trunks, but there is little evidence of that.

The site is open to the public and serves as a notable tourist attraction in the region.

Ishage Rock is a large elongated boulder of rock, balanced and standing upright on one of its small edges.

According to legend, this rock had never fallen off the steep side of the mountain where it rests.

The fact that this boulder has not fallen off the steep mountain side on which it rests remains a mystery to the Ado-Awaye people and tourists visiting the mountain.

Many people believe the Ishage have spiritual powers and many worship at the foot of the rock.

Report has it that people with certain wishes will send a white cloth to be tied around the rock after which their wishes are granted.

Also, if it doesn’t rain and rain is needed, the chief priest goes to the rock, covers the “waist” of the rock with a white cloth, then rain falls for 3-4 days straight.
