Mr Akinleye, who is also the Chief of Staff to the Governor said the PMS Monitoring committee has contacted the relevant authorities and is aware of the actual PMS allocated to Osun state including the actual list of companies and stations, allocated those PMS.

He assured members of the public that the committee started its job by getting to the root of actual PMS allocation to the state, informing the public that the monitoring activities will expose those behind the current untold hardship being inflicted on the good people of Osun State.

The Lagos State Government has said it would divert traffic at the Old Tollgate bus stop down to the Berger section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for 10 weeks.

The traffic diversion would commence from Monday, January 30, 2023, till Friday, April 15, 2023, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, said in a statement.

The government said the diversion was due to the continuation of the ongoing rehabilitation of the road by the Federal Ministry of Works.

The statement further hinted that, in the notification received by the state’s Ministry of Transportation, it was stated that the construction would be carried out in short segments in order to minimise inconveniences for motorists.

Also, traffic on the Ibadan-bound carriageway would be narrowed to two lanes to allow for the reconstruction of the other half of the road.

Oladeinde further stated that the U-turn in front of the Lagos State Emergency Centre would be temporarily closed to traffic, adding that motorists on the expressway would be diverted to the next U-turn at the Old Toll Gate by the traffic control point.Besides, Oladeinde emphasised that the traffic from CMD Road, intending to connect 7UP and Motorways on the Lagos-bound carriageway would also make use of the Old Tollgate/Traffic Point U–turn.

He equally stressed that trucks and heavy-duty vehicles would be diverted to Ojota Interchange, while the traffic on CMD Road inbound the expressway would be redirected to the entry point beside the FMW weighbridge to access the expressway on a contraflow.

The commissioner further appealed to the citizenry to shun indiscriminate stopping, waiting and parking along CMD Road, maintaining that this would complement the efforts of the traffic management team that would be deployed to manage vehicular movement.Oladeinde assured that signage with directions would be mounted along the road to guide motorists.

Road Users plying Oluyole Industrial/7up road have been experiencing difficult times navigating their ways since the beginning of this week.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the road had been witnessing unusual gridlock as a result of a diversion of motorists and motorcyclists coming from Sharp Corner/Oluyole Estate road and indiscriminate packing of trucks belonging to the companies around the area.

Radio Nigeria further gathered that the diversion was a result of repair works ongoing by the State Government on a bridge which commenced last weekend.

While feeling the pulse of the affected people, they lamented that it had been tough plying the road since the commencement of the repair.

Some of them said this week had been a terrible experience as they had been getting to their workplaces late, while they also get home very late in the night.

The Motorists and Commuters frowned at the decision to embark on the repairs during the daytime, describing it as an insensitive decision on the part of the government.

They however called on the government to fast-track the repair works and caution the companies in the area against indiscriminate packing for traffic flow to return to normalcy.

Gridlock has returned to the Longbridge axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, as Julius Berger resumed construction works on the road.

The ongoing repair of the road was suspended in December last year to enable travellers plying the route to enjoy hassle-free movement to their various destinations for the festive period.

The barricades on the road were also removed.

However, it was observed that the construction firm started moving its utility trucks back to the OPIC end of the road on Wednesday, as it also placed some barriers to divide the road from OPIC towards Kara Bridge.

As a result of the diversion traffic started building up along the axis on Wednesday night.

The gridlock increased on Thursday morning, extending to the Longbridge.

A joint team of security operatives, including the police, military and the Federal Road Safety Corps, were sighted at the Arepo end of the road, as they prevented motorists from driving against traffic.

It was also observed a gradual hike in transport fares, as Berger to Magboro increased from N300 to N500, while those heading towards Mowe/Ibafo paid N800.

A motorist, Funke Adebambo, expressed worry over the return of the gridlock, saying it always affected her business.

She said, “The traffic affects me economically. I take this route almost every day to purchase goods in Lagos and back to Ogun State. This affected me during the period the repair was going on last year. I only felt relief in December when they suspended the work. Now that they have resumed work, it will start affecting my movement again.”

A commuter, Tayo Oyewusi, complained about the huge transport fares.

A bus driver, Kunle Akanle, said the increase in transport costs was a result of the gridlock.

He said, “We have no choice but to increase the transport fares. The number of trips I covered before the traffic started has reduced. I now spend a long time in traffic. Even if we try to take alternative routes, my vehicle gets faulty because of the bad road.”

The Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ahmed Umar, said efforts were ongoing to ensure smooth movement along the road.

He said, “We are doing our best professionally to ensure smooth mobility, while also interfacing with Julius Berger to expedite action on the ongoing work. We are also calling on motorists to exercise patience while approaching the construction area, obey speed limits, imbibe discipline and avoid route violations to help us manage the traffic better.”

The Director, Federal Ministry of Works, South-West, Adedamola Kuti, did not take his calls and had yet to respond to a text message on the development as of the time this report was filed.

The yuletide period is often an occasion for passengers to travel regardless of the distance within or outside the state of their abode with the aim of joining their families and friends for a Christmas celebration.

However, inter and intra-state commercial drivers in Ibadan, Oyo State have lamented the high cost of premium motor spirit also known as petrol and vehicles spare parts attributing it to their decision to hike their transportation fare.

Radio Nigeria correspondent, who monitored the transportation situation, reports that passengers travelling for the yuletide celebration were also not happy with the increase in the fare.

The hike in transportation fares within and outside the state occasioned by the high cost of petroleum products had led to few passengers in motor parks.

During visits to Ojoo, Iwo Road, Challenge Motor parks and private transport companies, it was observed that transportation fares had increased by 35 and 50 percent compared to the situation in 2021.

For instance, Ibadan to Kaduna, Kano, which before now was between N6,050 and N8,050 by bus, goes for between N10,100 and N11,100.

However, passengers with a preference for cars will have to pay N12,100.

The same applies to vehicles plying from Ibadan to Sokoto which by bus cost N10,000 and car N12,000.

Ibadan to Okenne, Lokoja and Abuja ranges between N10,100 and N13,500 depending on passengers’ choice of vehicle.

The situation was not too different for passengers travelling from Ibadan to Warri delta state, which cost 10,000, Onitsha N12,050 Benin N7,000, port Harcourt N15,000  as confirmed by secretary of the park management system at Iwo road, Mr Abiola Akiode.

“Before Benin is N5,050,  Warri is N7,000 but now N10,000 is Warri, Benin is N7,000. Port Harcourt is N15,000.

The increase is because of the fuel. then the parts that we buy and other things for the motor are very expensive. You understand. No passengers like before. We pray may God let this country be as when things are good”, Akiode said.

Mr Fidelis Ogbonna, a general manager of a popular transportation company with a branch in Ibadan confirmed the fare in an interview with Radio Nigeria.

Radio Nigeria took time to confirm from a private transport firm  where it was observed that passengers travelling to Enugu, Bayelsa from Ibadan were made to brace up for N15,000 while Calabar and Uyo is N18,000

“It seems as if it is a planned something that once it comes to the December period there will be a scarcity of fuel. I don’t know why it should be so”.

Ogbonna speaks further: ” This is year is particularly different. How can a driver buy fuel for N250 or N300 per litre that has led to a hike in transport fairs across the country?

People are not rushing this year like last year. People prefer sending their loved ones gift items and staying back. People are really suffering in this country.  Things are really really very tough.

Government is in a position to regulate these people. They give an order and the order, it must be carried out. We have many refineries and none is working or working well.

If we supply fuel to neighbouring countries and they are enjoying it, why should we that are having it be suffering? So government should buckle up.”

Speaking on the transportation fare, Mr Ogbonna said “Ibadan to Abuja is N12,000. We don’t normally increase Ibadan to Abuja. Abakaliki is about N16,000, Onitsha is about N15,000, Enugu N16,000, Calabar, Uyo N18,000.

People want to travel but they don’t have the means. I personally want to travel but I don’t have the means. I want all my family to go, but I don’t have the money.”

Radio Nigeria also observed that passengers travelling by bus from Ibadan to Lagos have to pay N2,000, Sango Ota N2,500, Ibadan to Akure by bus ranged between N2,000 and  2,500 while by car cost N3,000, Ibadan to Ado-Ekiti by bus also ranged between 3,000 and 3,500, while the car fair is N4,000. Ibadan to Osogbo by bus which before now was N800 now cost N1,000

In an interview, one of the inter-state park managers at Iwo, Mr Kehinde Olanrewaju and two intra-state transporters Olanrewaju Alade and John Ehigwueze attributed the situation to high-cost of petrol per litre and vehicle parts.

“Fuel is costly and spare parts also. people don’t travel this year. People don’t travel, some are even stranded. Even when passengers are stranded here, we assist them,” Olanrewaju said.

The transporters, who lamented low passenger turnout, appealed to the government to urgently address the current inflation the nation is grappling with.

A passenger, Miss Bose Adekunle lamented the high cost of transportation which she said was unexpected.

At Nigerian Railway Corporation Moniya, passengers were also seen boarding the standard gauge to Lagos and Abeokuta.

The Sagamu Unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in Ogun State, says it will establish a mobile court to try erring drivers during the festive period.

Unit Commander of FRSC, Sagamu, Taofiq Iyanda, stated this in an interview with the newsmen in Sagamu, Ogun.

Mr Iyanda said this would serve as a deterrent to road users who intended to flout traffic rules and regulations during the yuletide.

He enjoined motorists to have all relevant documents in order not to be delayed by traffic personnel in the course of their journeys.

The unit commander added that motorists should ensure that their vehicles were properly serviced, especially for long trips, to prevent unnecessary breakdowns of cars on the roads.

Mr Iyanda stressed the need for vehicles’ fog lights to function as harmattan had started in some parts of the country.

He also warned against reckless driving, wrongful overtaking, and drunk driving to minimize accidents during the festive season.

Scarcity of Premium motor spirit, also known as petrol bites harder in Oyo town with some filling stations selling between N220 and N240.

Radio Nigeria correspondent reports that many commuters this morning, especially civil servants and school children trekked to their various schools and workplaces.

However, only Bovas filling stations are selling at N180 per litre to long queues of motorcyclists and motorists, obstructing free flow of traffic in the process.

The situation has also led to fifty percent hike in transport fares by Okada riders and intracity bus drivers.

Residents who reacted to the situation urged the government to speak out and explain what is happening in order to disallow people from making wrong insinuations.

The fuel scarcity was first noticed on Sunday this week before it got worsened Wednesday.

The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, says there would be an increase in the rail service fare as a result of the economic situation in the country.

According to the minister, the number of trips per day will also be reduced, adding that there will be night travelling.

Sambo disclosed this to journalists on Sunday in Kaduna while inspecting the train station.

He said, “The number of trips will be reduced. Naturally, you should expect that a certain number of passengers will not be comfortable boarding the train for obvious reasons.”

He further stated that the number of trips per day would increase as the travelling population increased.

“We are human beings, we are bound to feel a little bit uncomfortable until we can see that every security measure has been put in place. So, we will reduce the number of trips and as the travelling population picks up, we will increase the number of trips but we will certainly not travel at night for now.

“Please, expect an increase in fares. I am having final consultation with the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the management of the ministry to see whether it will be immediate or we will take a little time.

“We all know that prices of things have gone up, even airfares have gone up and we have not heard anybody cry about it. Why is it that it’s only when it is train fares that people are reactive? I can assure you that the poor masses will be taken care of and considered because we are a very sensitive government.”

And in 2021, 409 road crashes were recorded while 320 crashes were recorded in 2022, which is a decrease of 21.7 per cent of the total road crashes.

Speaking on this, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ondo State, Mr Ezekiel SonAllah who attributed some of the roads crashes to violations of road traffic rules and over-speeding, appealed to road users especially commercial drivers to obey traffic rules always, including ensuring that their vehicles were roadworthy to prevent carnage on the road.

Mr SonAllah reminded road users that life had no duplicate hence all must abide by the laws to stay alive.

Our reporter also spoke with other stakeholders on the occasion examining how best to make the road safer for users.

A transporter, Mr Debisi Oluwole suggested the fixing of bad roads and clearing bushes on the fringes of the highways, which he said were sometimes responsible for accidents.

An accident victim, who did not want his name mentioned, recounted how he survived a ghastly accident though with a fracture and warned road users against night travelling.

A traveller, Mr Kayode Williams who spoke with Radio Nigeria at a motor park in Akure, the Ondo State capital, charged the leadership of transport unions to always sensitize their members against reckless driving with an emphasis on constant maintenance of vehicles before travelling.

Mr Williams also suggested banning the sale of alcohol in motor parks as there are several drinking joints selling popular local alcoholic beverages such as Jedi, and Opa Eyin which are taken by many commercial drivers.

The theme for this year’s celebration of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is, “Justice” with the slogan “Remember, Support, Act!”.

Transportation

Tragedy struck early on Monday morning in Ado Ekiti, as two persons are feared dead in a ghastly road accident around the Olawuwo area of the city.

Eyewitness accounts say the two persons who were police officers were hit while on a motorcycle by a tipper lorry at a turning point around Olawuwo Filling Station, Adehun in Ado Ekiti.

They alleged that the driver of the tipper lorry who ran away immediately after the accident occurred must have driven under the influence of alcohol having veered off his lane to run over the victims who were said to be heading to work.

Some of the witnesses who spoke to Radio Nigeria said the incident would not have occurred if the lane currently under repair along the route has been completed on time.

They said the U-turn point where vehicles from Ado Ekiti cross over to the other lane from Iworoko has always appeared dangerous to motorists, with a call on the state government to expedite the rehabilitation of the road so as to prevent further carnages.

Meanwhile, the corpses of the two police officers involved in the accident have been reportedly taken to the state teaching hospital in Ado Ekiti.
