BREAKING: Kano Gov Orders Arrest of Deposed Emir Ado Bayero

The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered the immediate arrest of the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

The order was contained in a statement on Saturday by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sanusi Tofa.

The governor said Bayero should be arrested for allegedly creating tension in the state.

The statement titled ‘Gov. Yusuf Orders Arrest of Deposed Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero,’ read, “The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered the immediate arrest of the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, for creating tension in the state.“The former Emir was smuggled into Kano city last night in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace two days after being deposed by the governor.”

According to the statement, the new Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, arrived at the palace in the company of the governor, the deputy governor, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, and other top government functionaries at about 1 am on Saturday, May 25 2024.

“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect for disturbing public peace and attempting to destroy the relative peace the state enjoys,” the statement added.

Bayero, whose whereabouts had been unknown since he was deposed on Thursday, returned to Kano on Saturday.

The state House of Assembly repealed the law that ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had signed on December 5, 2019.

After signing the law, Ganduje split the emirate into five and appointed Emirs to each.

Upon signing the repealed Kano Emirates Council Law, Yusuf gave all the Emirs affected by the law 48 hours to vacate their palaces and hand them over to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

He subsequently announced the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi, whom Ganduje had deposed in 2020 as Emir of Kano.

The governor issued a reappointment letter to Sanusi on Friday, and Sanusi led Jumat prayers at the Government House, Kano.

In the early hours of Saturday, Ado Bayero returned to Kano into the waiting hands of a crowd of supporters, according to a video sighted by Daily Trust.

On Friday, the governor reappointed Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.Sanusi received his letter of reinstatement at the Government House in Kano.

While presenting him with the letter, the governor said, “By the powers conferred on me by the Kano Emirate Council Law of 1984 and 2024, and supported by the recommendation of the kingmakers, I have the singular pleasure of confirming the reappointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and the head of the Kano Emirate Council.”

Sanusi Receives Letter of Reinstatement, Court Says Halt

In a formal ceremony held at the Africa House within the Government House Kano, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State presented a letter of reappointment to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, reinstating him as the 16th Emir of Kano.

Governor Yusuf emphasised that the decision to reinstate Emir Sanusi was aimed at revitalising the esteemed heritage of Kano.

He expressed gratitude to the Speaker and members of the Kano State House of Assembly for their dedication in representing the desires of the people of Kano through the revision of the Kano Emirate Law.

During the presentation of the reappointment letter, Governor Yusuf underscored Emir Sanusi’s vast experience and expertise, highlighting his potential to contribute significantly to the advancement of the Emirate and the state.

He urged the reinstated Emir to utilise his knowledge for the betterment of both the Emirate and the broader community, emphasising the importance of fostering peace and harmony.

The ceremony was attended by prominent government officials, district heads, traditional title holders, and various stakeholders, symbolising the significance of the occasion in the region.

Reactions trails the development in Kano

In 2019, the creation of additional Emirates of Karaye, Gaya, Rano, and Bichi by former governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje had increased the number of first-class Emirs to five, leading to the deposition of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

However, in a recent sitting, the state Assembly passed the Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024, thereby establishing a single emirate council in the state.

This move has elicited a range of reactions with some residents expressing concerns about the centralisation of traditional power, while others welcome the return of Emir Sanusi Muhammad II.

Nurudeen Jibril, sees the reversal as the will of God, attributing leadership to divine selection.

Meanwhile, Buhari Abba voices worries that the dissolution might set a precedent for future governments to interfere with traditional institutions, potentially distorting the state’s historical fabric.

Salisu Muhammad, a businessman, expresses joy at Emir Sanusi Muhammad II’s return, praising his leadership qualities and philanthropy.

Police presence around the deposed Emir’s palace adds to the solemn mood.

The situation underscores the complexities surrounding traditional governance and the sentiments it evokes among the populace.

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court in Kano has issued an ex-parte order halting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from reinstating Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II until a substantive lawsuit regarding the reinstatement is resolved.

The court also objected to the abolition of four emirates: Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano.

Justice Liman issued an order directing all concerned parties to uphold the current situation until the lawsuit contesting the recent actions by the Kano State Government brought forth by Sarkin Dawaki Babba, Aminu Babba-Dan Agundi, is resolved.

The defendants named in the lawsuit encompass various entities: the Kano State government, the Kano State House of Assembly, the Speaker of the State Assembly, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, the Inspector General of Police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Department of State Security.

Justice Liman’s directive instructs the parties involved to maintain the state of affairs as it was before the enactment and approval of the bill into law, pending the adjudication of the Fundamental Rights application.

This legal decision coincides with Governor Yusuf’s announcement earlier in the day, wherein he confirmed the re-appointment of Emir Sanusi shortly after endorsing the Kano Emirate Council (Amended) bill into law.

The signing ceremony took place at the government house, with the presence of the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Ismaila Falgore, and other key officials.

“Considering the Constitutional and Jurisdictional Issues evident on the face of the application, the parties are required to address the Court on these matters during the hearing of the Fundamental Rights application scheduled for June 3, 2024.

“To maintain peace and security in the state, this Honorable Court has issued an Interim Injunction restraining the Respondents from enforcing, executing, implementing, and operationalising the Kano State Emirate Law Council (Repeal) Law.

“The parties are instructed to maintain the status quo before the passage and approval of the bill until the hearing of the Fundamental Rights application.”

The Judge adjourned the case until June 3, 2024, for further proceedings.

Emir of Kano Visits Awujale

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero has called for synergy among Traditional Rulers in Nigeria to foster national peace, unity and development.

Alhaji Ado-Bayero made the call when he led officials of the Kano Emirate Council, to the Ijebu-Ode palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, to pay homage and felicitate with the monarch on his ninetieth birthday and sixty-fourth coronation anniversary.

The Emir, who described the traditional institution as the closest form of administration to the people and a platform for building bridges to connect different parts of the country, urged the monarchs to continue to mobilize support for ensuring good governance.

“He is a royal father with a difference and whose reign has no doubt been a blessing not only to Ijebu land but Nigeria as a whole. Certainly, Kano and Ijebuland share the same similarities in terms of the people being business-oriented. Both Kano and Ijebu are known for commerce and our relationships are dated back in the years”, Alhaji Ado-Bayero stated.

“When I became the emir of kano about 4 years ago, I went round virtually all the states of the federation . This visit is a continuation of what have been doing but this is very special, I Hope my visit will continue to breach the gap . Am here in May and I hope to be back in August”, the Kano Monarch remarked.

Alhaji Ado-Bayero congratulated the Awujale on his birthday and coronation Anniversaries, describing the nonagenerian as a father that many traditional rulers in the Country would continue to tap from his wealth of experience.

In a remark, the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona acknowledged that the late father of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Ado-Bayero was a bossom friend and applauded the visitors, while renewing his commitment to protecting and providing guidance to the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Mr Ganiyu Hamzat who affirmed the contributions of the Awujale to the growth of the state traditional council, the education sector and other fields of endeavor, also prayed God to grant him more grace on the throne.

Members of the Ijebu traditional council including the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo, Oba Lawrence Adebayo, the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba AbdulRasaq Adenugba, Fuji Maestro and the Olori Omo-Oba Akile-Ijebu, Wasiu Ayinde, the Onigegewura of Ijebuland, Chief Tunde Oladunjoye, as well as the former Senator representing Ogun Central, Dr Lanre Tejuosho witnessed the ceremony.

Decadence of Yoruba cultural values required rigorous effort of stakeholders – Obasanjo

The family must rise to the responsibility of restoring and preserving Yoruba cultural heritage with a view to combating the threats confronting the society.

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo stated this at the maiden global Yoruba history and heritage celebration held at June 12 Cultural centre, Kuto Abeokuta.

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo said restoring of Yoruba cultural values required the rigorous effort of the family and other stakeholders in view of the uniqueness in the people’s cultural heritage which encompassed every aspect of their lives.

The former President maintained that the uniqueness in various ways of identity of the Yoruba people, including language, names, mode of dressing, tribal mark, greetings, moral training, religions and festival would always keep them check from engaging in crimes and social vices.

Also, the Alake of Egba Land, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo represented by the Apena of Egba Land, Chief Alani Bankole who highlighted the areas of expertise of the people to include some artistic work and agriculture called on the young to invest in agriculture as part of efforts to promote industriousness and boost food production.

Similarly, the Olowu of Owu kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, who called on stakeholders to protect Yoruba cultural heritage from going into extinction said the rich potential in Art and crafts should be explored by the youths to earn a living.

Earlier, the convener of the programme and a legal practitioner, Mr Kehinde Somoye represented by Dr Abdultaofeek Durojaye had explained that the programme was put together to rescue Yoruba art and cultural heritage from going into extinction.

He called on stakeholders including traditional rulers, parents and other custodians of culture to promote the Yoruba cultural heritage to enhance tourism and promote the socio-economic development of the country.

Osun Holds ODUAFEST in June

Osun state government will host the South West Oodua Festival, ODUAFEST between June 23rd – 25th, 2024.

The South-West Vice-President of the Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria, FTAN, Mr Tunde Kolade made this known during the stakeholders meeting at the Center for Black Culture in Osogbo, Osun State.

Mr Kolade who explained that all states in the Southwest would be in attendance, noted that this would improve tourism infrastructure and foster collaborations that would drive growth and development in Osun state.

He also said tourism investors were involved in the programme alongside relevant stakeholders and lovers of culture.

In his keynote address, the Chairman, Osun State Tourism Board, Mr Taiwo Adeleke, explained that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration stands out in promoting Yoruba culture among other states, which earned Osun the privilege of hosting the regional cultural event.

He urged all stakeholders to contribute and actively participate for the success of the festival, adding that exhibition of various dimension will hold during the three days programme.

Mr Adeleke further explained that The Oodua Festival would boost the development of the tourism sector in the state, as well as the rich traditions and customs of the yoruba people.

Earlier, the Osun State Tourism Board Coordinator, Mrs Oluwatoyin Ajayi appreciated Governor Ademola Adeleke for his support and approval and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi for the promotion and development of culture.

Oba of Benin Celebrates Return of Artefacts from Germany

Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, on Saturday evoked memories of old as he danced to the songs of his forebears when he received two artefacts from Germany through the National Commission for Museum and Monument, NCMM.

The national treasures include a wooden and bronze stools said to have been used by Oba Esigie and Oba Eresonye between 15th and 17th centuries.

Alongside others, the artefacts were looted by the British during their invasion of the Benin palace in 1897.

The two items were handed over to the NCMM on behalf of the Nigerian government by the German authorities in 2022.

Director-General of the NCMM, Mr Olugbile Holloway, on behalf of the Federal Government presented them.

Addressing the monarch, Holloway pledged collaboration with the Benin Royal Court in uplifting and displaying the Edo heritage.

He said: “NCMM will join hands with the Royal Court to create a befitting destination for people around the world to come and appreciate these works. What you see before us was originally taken away from the Royal family in 1897. We have a stool made of Bronze and a wooden stool. I speak for every member of my team when I say that we remain loyal to the Royal Court. If there is anything we can do, we will do to support this laudable initiative.

”This heritage is not just Benin heritage, but Nigeria’s heritage. When we speak of Benin heritage, there is nobody that doesn’t know the great works of ours. I appreciate you, we will always do what we can do with our powers to make His Royal Majesty lineage in memory.”
After unveiling the repatriated artefacts, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, with excited Chiefs and members of the royal family, danced to Benin traditional rendition in dramatic dance steps, offering prayers to God and his ancestors.

The monarch appreciated the German government and the federal government for their efforts.
Recall that the Swedish government had also said it would return 39 pieces of Benin artefacts in its Museum to the custody of Obaseki Ewuare II.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, said the Swedish Ambassador to Nigeria, Annika Hahn-Englund, conveyed the Swedish government decision when she paid a courtesy visit to Oba of Benin Palace in Benin City, Edo State.

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke says he will continue to devote himself to good governance and development of the state.

Governor Adeleke stated this at his installation as Asiwaju of Edeland and launching of a new Ultra modern palace for Timi of Edeland in Ede, Osun State.

He said his resolve to be committed to the development of Osun State was borne out of the people’s acceptance of his government.

While appreciating dignitaries present at his installation ceremony, Governor Adeleke solicited the support of traditional rulers, sons, and daughters of the state at home and abroad, for his administration’s developmental programmes.

The Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi while conferring the the title of Asiwaju of Edeland on Governor Adeleke, advised him to continue the good works of infrastructural development in the state.

Ooni Ogunwusi giving ancestral blessings, prayed for his reign as Asiwaju of Edeland to be full of peace and achievements.

Earlier, the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde congratulated Governor Adeleke for the giant strides in infrastructural development of Osun State, saying he is up to the competition with developments in Oyo State.

Dignitaries at the installation ceremony included former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde who is also the host, Governor Babajide Sanwoolu of Lagos State, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, former governors, Chief Rasheed Ladoja from Oyo State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola from Osun State and Dr. Olusegun Mimiko from Ondo State, captains of industry, PDP Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Umar Dagogo and other political stalwarts.

Oba Olakulehin Praises Predecessor

Olubadan- designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin has described the Late, Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun as an epitome of unity, oneness, and love who brought more developments to Ibadanland.

The Olubadan-designate, Oba Olakulehin who paid a visit to the family House of late Oba Lekan Balogun at Ali-Iwo Area, Ibadan, Oyo State was accompanied on the visit by Osi Balogun, Oba Lateef Adebimpe, Ashipa Olubadan, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi and Ashipa Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba  Kolawole Adegbola.

Oba Olakulehin who spoke through Oba Lateef Adebimpe described the visit as historic, adding that there was never rancour among the members of Olubadan Advisory Council during the reign of Oba Balogun.

The Olubadan-designate urged the members of Ali-Iwo family to be thankful to God for the life and times of their departed patriarch whose reign was short but impactful.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the younger brother of the Late Ibadan, Senator Kola Balogun, appreciated Oba Olakulehin for the heroic and historic visit, emphasizing that it had never happened in the history that Olubadan-designate visited the family of his predecessor.

On the ground to receive the Olubadan-Designate were the wives of the late Oba Lekan Balogun, family members, and some of his Children.

Court Restrains Adeleke from Presenting Staff of Office to Aree of Iree

An Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo has restrained Governor, Ademola Adeleke from presenting the Staff of Office to the new Aree of Iree, Oba Muritala Oyelakin.

The restraining order followed a motion ex-parte filed by Oba Raphael Oluponle in a suit through his counsel, Abdulrahman Okunade, where he sought an order of interlocutory restraining Governor Adeleke from proceeding further in installing Oyelakin as the Aree, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

Other defendants in the suit are Prince Muritala Oyelakin, the State Attorney-General, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs among others.

After the application had been moved, the presiding judge, Justice Awe, held, “I have no doubt in my mind having considered the deposition of the applicant together with the attached exhibits, as well as the counsel’s submissions on same that this application ought to succeed.

“There is indeed an urgent need to maintain the status quo ante bellum pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction also filed in respect of the same matter.

“Accordingly, the claimant/applicant’s application succeeds and it is hereby ordered as prayed.”

The applicant in the matter, Oba Raphael Oluponle was appointed and installed Aree by the immediate past governor of Osun, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola in November 2022. towards the end of his tenure, while his successor, Senator Adeleke, had immediately, after taking over, reversed the appointments of all traditional rulers appointed by Oyetola.

The state government had earlier slated tomorrow for the presentation of the certificate, instrument, and staff of office to Prince Muritala Oyelakin as the new Aree of Iree

Traditional Rulers, Eminent Personalities Pay Homage to Olubadan Designate

The Alalubosa residence of the Olubadan Designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin has been a beehive of activities with individuals and groups paying homage to the recently nominated 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Among the people who have recently visited the Olubadan Designate include a Prominent Business Mogul, Chief Bode Amao and Former President- General of Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, CCII,  Chief Bayo Oyero, Former Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Prof. Adekunle Adeniran and Venerable Olatunde Alamu.

Several groups have also visited the Monarch including members of the Ibadan Kingmakers led by Oba Lateef Adebimpe, Iyalode line of the Ibadan Traditional Council led by the Otun Iyalode of Ibadanland, Chief Amudalat Adekunle, Leading top Anglican Clerics to the Oba was The Most Reverend Joseph Akinfenwa and Mogajis of Ibadan families with Aare Egbe Mogaji – Asimiyu Ariori as Head.

On Monday, 29th of April, 2024, The Royal Highnesses made up of Obas under the Royal Majesties in the Ibadan Obaship structure were at the Monarch’s palace to pay their respects. Leading the 14 Royal Highnesses was The Oniroko Of Iroko, Oba Olasunkanmi Opeola, who expressed delight and satisfaction at the condition in which they met Oba Owolabi Olakulehin and prayed for his long and successful tenure as the 43rd Olubadan.

In his words, “The Royal Highnesses are here today to pay obeisance to Kabiyesi as he prepares to ascend the throne of his forefathers. Oba Olakulehin has been good to us and was very instrumental to our installation as Royal Highnesses. It will therefore be unforgivable if we don’t come to pay homage and respects to our benefactor. Our prayer is for God’s guidance, protection, peaceful and long reign as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland”

On Tuesday, 30th of April, 2024, the Association of Traditional Baales also took their turn to pay homage to the Oba Olakulehin. The Traditional Baales who are the Ibadan less City were led by Baale Folorunso Ige – Baale of Olohunde Ige in Oluyole Local Government saying they are looking forward to the colourful and peaceful coronation of Oba Olakulehin that will usher in a tenure of greater growth and development in Ibadanland.

All these visits are coming in the wake of the preparations for the coronation ceremony of Oba Olakulehin following his nomination as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland by the Ibadan Traditional Kingmakers and the much-anticipated approval and announcement by the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde.

Tinubu Eulogises Asiwaju of Ijebuland, Chief Adegunwa

President Bola Tinubu has described the new Asiwaju of Ijebuland as a living legend and a great son, who through industry, has contributed to the socio-economic development of his state and fatherland.

Tinubu stated this on Saturday at the installation of Chief Adegunwa and his wife, Hajia Fatima Adegunwa as the Yeye Asiwaju and Arobake of Ijebuland by the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, held at the Palace Ground, Ijebu-Ode.

Represented by the Vice President, Sen. Shettima, President Tinubu lauded the tenacity and hard work of Chief Adegunwa, who rose from being a photographer to food industry which had helped in opening up the country’s economy and provide employment opportunities for thousands of Nigerians.

President Tinubu appreciated the Awujale and the people of Ijebuland for conferring the prestigious title on the renowned industrialist, saying this would serve as an example to the young ones.

In his remarks, the governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun said that the installation of Chief Adegunwa as the new Asiwaju of Ijebuland underscored his esteem status and unwavering commitment to the advancement of his people and nation, appreciating the Awujale for considering the new Asiwaju for the honour.

The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona who spoke through the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland, Chief Sunny Kuku, described Chief Adegunwa as a great philanthropist and son who has contributed to the economic development of Ijebuland, Ogun State and the nation.

He said the chieftaincy conferment was a testimony of the love and appreciation to a man who brought honour and development to Ijebuland through hard work and perseverance.

The event was attended by prominent personalities, including former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Deputy Governor, Engr. New Olubadan Emerges

Oba Owolabi Olakulehin has been appointed as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Olubadan-in-Council which is the Traditional Kingmakers of Ibadanland agreed to name Oba Olakulehin as the next Olubadan, being the Most Senior High Chief in the Balogun line of Olubadan chieftaincy ascension.

He was nominated by the Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Gbadamosi Adebimpe.

The meeting of the Council is ongoing at the Olubadan Palace, Oja Oba, Ibadan.

Comments on Olakulehin’s health, mere personal opinions which should be disregarded – Ladoja

The Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, has faulted the position of some Ibadan High Chiefs over the health status of the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

Ladoja while addressing newsmen after Eid-el-Fitri prayer at his residence on Wednesday in Ibadan, said that the comments were mere expressions of personal opinions since the chiefs were not medical personnel.

Otun Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abimbola Ajibola was recently quoted by media as saying the Olubadan designate is sick and needs time to get well before his coronation.

“Has anyone seen him since last Friday? Those who attempted to visit him after Friday were unsuccessful. They are coercing him. We should allow him to recuperate”, he said.

However, Ladoja told newsmen that such views were speculative and not based on medical facts.

“The comments of Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola and others on the health status of Olubadan designate are merely personal opinions which should be disregarded.

“All persons who have been speaking on Olubadan designate’s health are not medical personnel thereby they lack the merits to speak.

“Only God can determine lifespan, who to become king and how long a person will last on the throne,” he said.

The former governor said that a meeting to take decision on issues concerning Olubadan stool has been fixed for Friday.

He said that the case he filed in court on issues bothering on Olubadan stool was to defend his right against the threat by some Ibadan High Chiefs that collected crowns because he refused to join them.

He expressed his willingness to withdraw the case once they cooporate with him in the interest of peace in Ibadanland.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo says there are no issues with the Olubadan traditional stool ascension as against the controversy trailing the revered seat of the Olubadan following the demise of Oba Lekan Balogun. 

He stated this while speaking with newsmen after hosting the delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Chief Bayo Lawal who paid homage to the governor for Eid-Fitr. 

Governor Makinde urged those spreading unfounded rumour to desist pointing out that the Olubadan in council is yet to send the government an official letter on its decision on who is to ascend the throne. 

The governor assured that the government would make the best decision in the interest of Ibadan land and Oyo State at large when the Ibadan-in-Council finally made the nomination

On the forthcoming local government election in the state, Governor Makinde, while stating that the poll was not a do-or-die affair, enjoined the PDP candidates to intensify the campaign for the election victory in the April 27th poll. 

Earlier, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Chief Bayo Lawal appreciated the governor for his love for the Muslim community in the state since his assumption of office in 2019.

To allay the fear of absence from Public appearance in recent times, the Olubadan-designate, who is the current Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin has returned to his Alalubosa residence, Ibadan, Oyo State 

Speaking with newsmen after their visitation to the Olubadan-designate, the Osi Balogun-Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lateef Adebimpe who led other three High Chiefs to his Alalubosa Residence said, the incoming Olubadan is hale and hearty and ready for Official Coronation.

According to him, it is impossible for the Olubadan-in-Council to nominate Oba Olakulehin as the next Olubadan unless they are sure that he is in good condition, thanking God that the Olubadan-designate will ascend the throne of his forefathers.

Also at the residence of Olubadan- Designate were the Osi Olubadan, Oba Eddy Oyewole, the Ashipa Olubadan, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi; Asipa Balogun Olubadan, Oba Kola Adegbola.

Meanwhile, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland and a Former Governor of Oyo State, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja confirmed to Newsmen that the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin has arrived and will soon appear at the Meeting of Olubadan-in-Council.

The Olubadan stool became vacant following the death of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun on Thursday, March 14 at the age of 81.

The Governor stated this at the Government House, Osogbo while receiving an award of Excellent Performance in Promotion of Culture from the President of ASA Day Worldwide Incorporated in Canada.

He pointed out that his administration is passionate about culture, thereby prioritizing the promotion of culture and the Tourism sector.

While appreciating the Association for presenting him with the award, the Governor promised to be part of ASA Day, which the Association was planning to mark in Osun State in June, 2024.

Earlier, the President of ASA Day Worldwide, Prince Olaniyi Oyatoye appreciated the Governor for the warm reception, noting that Governor Adeleke is the first sitting Governor to be given the award from Canada in Nigeria.

Prince Olatoye who commended the Governor for promoting Yoruba culture, as well as his developmental achievements in Osun, solicited the support of the state government towards the ASA Day celebration in Osun state.

Oyo State House of Assembly has stressed the need for the Executive arm to immortalize the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Olalekan Balogun

The House during a special Yoruba plenary presided over by the speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin said Oba Balogun was a respected politician, scholar and custodian of culture who had made his footprint on the sand of time.

The House described the late Olubadan of Ibadanland as a first-class monarch whose reign was impactful and peaceful.

Presenting the motion, lawmaker representing Ibadan North East Constituency 2, Mr Abiodun Babalola said Oba Balogun has made history and would never be forgotten.

While contributing, other lawmakers, including Mrs Comforter Olajide, Mr. Gabriel Babajide and Mr Sunkanmi Babalola commiserated with the immediate family of the late monarch, the Olubadan in Council, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes as well as sons and daughters of  Ibadan land.

Also during the plenary, the house stressed the need for the executive to provide more support for farmers in the state as the planting season sets in, to ensure an abundant food supply in Oyo State

Similarly, the lawmakers, following  a motion brought before the house by Mr. Gbenga Oyekola, Atiba state constituency, also appealed to the executive to empower Local Government authorities to enable them to embark on the rehabilitation of bad roads in their local councils

Condolence: Dignitaries Throng Late Oba Lekan Balogun’s Residence

Following the demise of Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun dignitaries have continued to pay condolence visits to the bereaved family at the late monarch’s residence, Alarere, Iwo Road, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Some of the personalities who earlier on Wednesday visited the late Olubadan’s residence include a foremost legal luminary, Chief Niyi Akintola, S.A.N; a former board member of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Chief Bolajoko Doherty, a former Head of Service in Oyo State Civil Service, Alhaji Tajudeen Aremu and representatives of traditional rulers from Oke Ogun Zone of Oyo State.

In their separate remarks, Chief Bolajoko Doherty and Secretary-General of Oke-Ogun Obas who is also the Aare of Ago-Are, Oba Abodunrin Oyetunji described the deceased as an enigmatic monarch whose entire life was dedicated to the service of ‎God and humanity and this was evident in his peaceful and harmonious reign in Ibadanland.

The sympathisers urged the family to take solace in the fact that Oba Balogun lived a good life and left a great legacy worthy of emulation by all sons and daughters of Ibadanland.

They described the transition of the Oba Balogun as a colossal loss not only to the family but also to Ibadan land, Oyo State and the entire nation adding that his legacies would remain in the hearts of the people.

Other members of the traditional rulers from Oke Ogun Zone of Oyo State who also paid their condolences were, Ona-Onibode of Igboho, Eleyinpo of Ipapo and Alamodu of Ago-Amodu.

Dignitaries Pay Last Respects at Olubadan’s Lying-in-State

A lying-in state has been held in honour of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Olalekan Balogun at the ancient Mapo hall, Oja’ba Ibadan.

Our correspondent reports that the programme which was to allow dignitaries to pay last respects to the late monarch had in attendance Ibadan chiefs, religious and market leaders government functionaries, sons and daughters of Ibadanland.

Other dignitaries at the event included the Otun Olubadan and former governor of Oyo state, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, Maye Olubadan, Chief Lekan Alabi, Senator Kola Balogun and family members of the late Olubadan.

Speaking shortly before the commencement of the lying In state, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, said that the Ibadan traditional system remains unchanged noting that the seat of Olubadan is not vacant.

Senator Ladoja who revealed that there is no controversy in the appointment of a new Olubadan explained that Olubadan-in-Council will embark on the Coronation process of a new Olubadan immediately after the burial of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Balogun.

Also speaking with newsmen, Maye Olubadan, Chief Lekan Alabi, praised the ancestors of Ibadanland who established the well-organized and unshakable traditional system.

Chief Alabi who urged Ibadan indigenes to take solace in the fact that Oba Balogun lived a meaningful life called for maximum support for the next Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Prayer was later offered for the repose of the deceased and the family he left behind

No date yet for coronation of new Olubadan – Ladoja

The Olubadan-in-Council, on Friday, said there was no specific date yet for the coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland.

A former governor of Oyo State and Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, made this announcement shortly after a closed-door meeting with the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, at his Alalubosa residence in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The meeting followed the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, whose reign ended Thursday after two years on the throne.

He died at 81 at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Ladoja explained that Ibadan already has Olubadan-designate and there is no question about that.

He said, “The departed monarch (Oba Balogun) came from the Otun line, the next monarch will be from the Balogun line. So, the head of the Balogun line is the Balogun of Ibadanland, who has become the Olubadan-designate.

“We all know that Ibadan does things accordingly, if a king dies, we already know who is next, and we refer to him as designate.

“We are here to formalise what is next after the burial rites of the deceased would have been completed. We also discussed how to give a befitting burial to the deceased.

“Since the deceased is a Muslim, he has to be buried in the Islamic way, and the Islamic way is that he has to be buried today (Friday). So, it has been decided that he will be buried today at Aliiwo, which is his ancestral home by 4 pm today.

“There is no date yet for the coronation of the new Olubadan, but the date shall be announced as soon as the burial rite for the deceased is completed.”

Among members of the Olubadan-in-Council at the meeting include Ladoja; Oba Hamidu Ajibade; Oba Adebayo Akande; and Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi.

Olubadan for Burial Friday

The late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun Alli Okunmade II, will be interred according to Islamic rites today at 4 p.m. at his Aliiwo ancestral home in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

This is contained in a statement by the late Olubadan’s younger brother, Senator Kola Balogun.

 Senator Kola Balogun said the executive governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde has been informed.

 He said the late Olubadan was a British-trained PhD holder, a former lecturer, a former senator and a successful businessman.

Meanwhile, the President General, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, CCII, Alhaji Sulaiman Adewole, has described the demise of the Olubadan Oba Lekan Balogun as a great loss to Ibadanland and Oyo State.

Alhaji Sulaiman Adewole stated this when he led some of his executives on a condolence visit to the family of the deceased.

He said that though the late Olubadan’s reign was short, it was impactful, progressive and recorded tremendous achievement. 

Recall that the late Ibadan monarch joined his ancestors at the age of 81 last night at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, after a brief illness.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced the passage unto glory of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Mohood Lekan Balogun, Alli.

The governor made this announcement in a statement on Thursday night, stating that Olubadan Balogun, joined his ancestors late Thursday evening at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

Governor Makinde described Oba Balogun as an epitome of royal excellence and a great achiever, who made great marks on Ibadanland in just a little over two years of his reign.

He expressed his condolences to the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Traditional Council and the people of Ibadanland and Oyo State, praying to God to grant repose to the soul of the deceased monarch.

The late Olubadan was born on October 18, 1942.

Olubadan ascended his forefathers’ throne two years ago after the passage of the late Oba Saliu Adetunji.

On Monday, the late monarch thanked God for the grace and privilege to clock two years on the throne, just as he thanked members of his advisory council for their unflinching support so far.

Balogun, in a statement by his Personal Assistant on Media, Oladele Ogunsola, in Ibadan, the state capital, said the second anniversary, which coincided with the commencement of this year’s Ramadan fast, was also used as an opportunity by the monarch to ask for prayers for the country by the Islamic faithful and expression of love for one another to make the period stress-free for the adherents.

The monarch said his clocking two years on the throne was a special grace by his creator that he could not take for granted.

Makinde Assures Traditional Rulers of Inclusiveness in Affairs

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has expressed its readiness to involve the traditional rulers in the administrative affairs of the state.

He said this during an interactive session with the traditional leaders held at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Governor Makinde represented the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal noted that failure of the Abiola Ajimobi to fully implement the year 2000 Chieftaincy Law section 3 sub-section 3, 28 and 37 as amended by Late Christopher Alao-Akala in May 2011 has not enabled regular chairmanship and deputy chairmanship rotation among Alaafin, Olubadan, Soun and Onileegbon, Aseyin, Okere and Eleruwa respectively every two years.

The governor pledged to accept advice submitted by the Obas for a careful inclusivity for due co-partners in the progress of the state against banditry, insurgency and illegal mining.

Reacting, member representing Lagelu State Constituency and House Chairman on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon Akintunde Olajide expressed the readiness of the state Legislature to amend the year 2000 chieftaincy ACT when received from the state executive.

Earlier, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matter, Segun Olayiwola said the meeting would no doubt strengthen synergy between the traditional council and the state government.
