Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has had all charges against him dropped following the “withdrawal of key witnesses”.

The 21-year-old forward faced allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault with all three charges related to the same woman.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it had a “duty to stop the case” following the “withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light”.

Those developments meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”, it added.

The investigation began just over a year ago, in January 2022 with a trial date earlier set for 27 November this year.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the decision to drop the charges had “not been taken lightly”.

GMP’s head of public protection, Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, said it was “only fair” that the force publicised the latest development given the “significant media coverage of this case”.

She added: “The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly”.

Ms Kerr did, however, appeal to people who felt they were, or might have been, a victim, reiterating GMP’s “commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls”.

Also, Manchester United has not made any comments about the development yet.

It would be recalled that Greenwood has been suspended by the club since January 30 last year, with the club adding that he would not return to training or play any matches “until further notice”.

Sportswear giants, Nike, also suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with Greenwood, while Electronic Arts confirmed he had been removed from active squads on its FIFA 22 game.

The Bradford-born player came through the United academy and made his senior debut in a Champions League victory away to Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019.

He has one senior cap for England, playing in the Nations League match against Iceland in September 2020.

Cape Verde has become the first country to name a stadium after Pele following FIFA president, Gianni Infantino’s call for every nation to do so.

The Prime Minister of the African country said they would name their national stadium, Estádio da Várzea, after the Brazil great, who died aged 82 on December 29.

Cape Verde, which is made up of a group of islands to the west of the main African continent in the Atlantic Ocean, shares Portuguese as a common language with Brazil.

Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva said Brazil and Cape Verde had a history and a culture that “go hand in hand, considering that they are two sister countries, linked by language and by very similar identities”.

“Pele was and will always be a reference in Brazil, in our Portuguese-speaking world and in the rest of the world, being an idol that connects several generations,” the Prime Minister added.

”As a tribute and recognition to this figure who makes us all great, I manifest the intention (of the Government) to name our national stadium as ‘Pele Stadium’ in an initiative to which, I believe, several countries around the world will accompany us.”

The official Cape Verde government website said that the executive had already notified FIFA of its intention to change the name of the stadium.

Infantino told reporters in Brazil on Monday: “We’re going to ask every country in the world to name one of their football stadiums with the name of Pele.”

Pele was laid to rest in Brazil on Tuesday after lying in state for 24 hours at the Vila Belmiro Stadium, the home of his former club Santos.

The oceanside home of the team nicknamed “Peixe” — “fish” in Portuguese — is expecting a huge influx of fans looking to honour the “King” of football, who died aged 82 on Thursday after a long battle with cancer.

Known as Vila Belmiro after the neighbourhood where it is located, the black-and-white stadium has a capacity of 16,000 people.

Pelé, the Brazilian football legend who won three World Cups and became the sport’s first global icon, has died at the age of 82.

“Everything that we are, is thanks to you,” his daughter Kely Nascimento wrote in a post on Instagram. “We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.”

Pelé was admitted to a hospital in São Paulo in late November for a respiratory infection and for complications related to colon cancer.

Last week, the hospital said his health had worsened as his cancer progressed. For more than 60 years, the name Pelé has been synonymous with soccer.

He played in four World Cups and is the only player in history to win three, but his legacy stretched far beyond his trophy haul and remarkable goal-scoring record.

“I was born to play football, just like Beethoven was born to write music and Michelangelo was born to paint,”

Pelé famously said.Pelé was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in Três Corações – an inland city roughly 155 miles northwest of Rio de Janeiro – in 1940, before his family moved to the city of Bauru in São Paulo.

As a child, his first taste of soccer involved playing barefoot with socks and rags rolled up into a ball – a humble beginning that would grow into a long and fruitful career.

But when he first took up the game, his ambitions were modest.“My dad was a good football player, he scored a lot of goals,” Pelé told CNN in 2015. “His name was Dondinho; I wanted to be like him.“He was famous in Brazil, in Minas Gerais. He was my role model. I always wanted to be like him, but what happened, to this day, only God can explain.”

As a teenager, Pelé left home and began training with Santos, scoring his first goal for the club side before his 16th birthday. He would go on to score 619 times over 638 appearances for the club, but it is his feats in the iconic yellow jersey of Brazil for which he is best remembered.

The world first got a glimpse of Pelé’s dazzling ability in 1958, when he made his World Cup debut aged 17.

He scored Brazil’s only goal in the country’s quarterfinal victory against Wales, then netted a hat-trick in the semifinal against France and two in the final against host Sweden.

Italian Serie A leaders, Napoli, are set to offer Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen a new contract following speculations linking him away from the Stadio Maradona Stadium in the January transfer window.

According to reports, The Nigerian striker has been on the radar of several top clubs in the Premier League with Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle some of the few to have been linked with the Nigerian, but he is not considering the option of exiting the Italian outfit at the moment, noting that, he aims to win the league with Napoli.

Napoli rejected a €100m bid from Newcastle in January 2021 and La Gazzetta Dello Sport reports Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis is working on the renewal of Osimhen’s contract which expires in three years.

“De Laurentiis is working hard to renew his contract. The current constraint until 2025 would protect the club, but the salary of €4m net risks being too low not to lead the player into temptation,” Area Napoli reports.

The 23-year-old is a fundamental pivot of Luciano Spalletti’s side and Italian pundit Fabio Santini recently claimed that it will cost any potential club €120m to sign the Nigeria striker.

“In August, Osimhenr’s price seemed indispensable: €100m and it is to be believed that this glittering season will lead to further raising his quotation in view of the summer.”

Despite missing several games due to injury, Osimhen has been fantastic for the Partenopeans this season and has established himself as a prolific centre-forward, registering 10 goals and three assists in 14 appearances in all competitions this season.

He was also named the Best Young Player of the 2021/22 season beating Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, Leao of AC Milan and Sassuolo’s duo Gianluca Scamacca and Giacomo Raspadori to the prestigious award despite scoring fewer goals than the trio.

The Nigeria goal poacher has scored 38 goals in 76 appearances with the Parthenopeans since 2020.

With 18 goals, the highest by any player in the Serie A in 2022, the former Lille striker leads the list of highest goals scored in the year under review, not taking goals scored from the penalty spot into account.

Naples are the only unbeaten team in Serie A, having won 13 games, drawn two games and top the table with 41 points.
