Rui Vitoria has been sacked as Egypt head coach after the African football giants hopes of a record-extending eighth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph were dashed last week, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced.

In a statement, the EFA board of directors “thanked Portuguese manager Rui Vitoria and his staff,” adding it was “reviewing foreign coaches’ resumes”.

In the interim, former al-Ahly coach Mohamed Youssef would take charge of the national side, who were knocked out of the competition last week in a dramatic penalty shoot-out against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The loss in the last 16 was a bitter pill for the Egyptians, who had gone to Ivory Coast hoping to win a first AFCON since 2010, a year before talisman Mohamed Salah made his senior international debut.

The team had already lost the Liverpool star to a hamstring injury, after what local pundits called a lacklustre group stage performance with three draws.

The EFA had last week “apologised” to Egyptian fans for “not achieving their ambitions”.

Vitoria, whose tenure with the Pharoahs lasted under two years, is among a host of AFCON coaches on their way out.

The tournament has been a success for the continent’s underdogs, and disappointing for its heavyweights.

The five top-ranked African nations were all knocked out before the quarter-finals, as well as the four semi-finalists from the last edition.

Vandalism and other criminal activities in and around the four major stadia in Ogun State will reduce community involvement, increase insecurity and hamper sports development.

Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr Wasiu Isiaka, who stated this at the Yewa Traditional Council Meeting, held in Ilaro, decried the high rate of vandalism at the Gateway International Stadium, noting that the facility that should serve as a hub for sporting events, cultural activities and community gatherings, had been desecrated by criminal activities of a few individuals.

The commissioner, who sought collaboration with the traditional rulers in Yewaland, expressed optimism that the collaboration with the government and other law enforcement agencies would drastically reduce vandalism at the Ilaro Stadium.

Super Eagles winger, Ademola Lookman was on the score sheet twice as Nigeria saw off perennial rivals Cameroon to book a quarter finals spot at the ongoing AFCON 2023.

Goals in either half of the tie ensured that Nigeria will continue in the competition as they seek a fourth AFCON title.

Nigeria had an early Semi Ajayi goal disallowed following a VAR review in this last-16 clash before the constant pressing and bullying of the Cameroon defence by Victor Osimhen led to Lookman finding the net in the 36th minute.

The hardworking defence kept the Indomitable Lions at bay before Lookman in a man-of-the-match display made sure of the victory in the 90th minute in front of 22,085 fans at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

They will now return to the same venue for a last-eight meeting next Friday with Angola, who earlier defeated Namibia 3-0.

With the fearsome Osimhen leading from the front, the Super Eagles are clearly a serious threat to reigning champions Senegal as they chase a fourth continental crown.

This fixture is a Cup of Nations classic, with the first three of Cameroon’s five titles coming after wins over Nigeria in the final.

The very first, when a side led by Roger Milla came from behind to win 3-1 in 1984, was achieved in this same stadium in Ivory Coast’s economic capital.

Nigeria won the most recent encounter with their neighbours, in the last 16 in Egypt five years ago, and their current side came into this match as favourites against Rigobert Song’s Cameroon.

The Super Eagles eased through their group unbeaten, while Cameroon needed a stoppage-time goal against Gambia to progress.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off Saturday with a tricky tie between Ivory Coast and Guniea-Bissau. The 34th edition of the tournament is considered one of the most wide-open in recent times, with several teams capable of lifting the title on February 11.

The Super Eagles are in Group A alongside hosts, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau

This group is straightforward on paper as Ivory Coast and Nigeria have better players than the other two nations, so, most would fancy both to easily progress to the knockout stages.

The Elephants are hosting the event for the second time and are looking for their third continental title. They last won it in 2015 at the tail end of their Golden Generation. They have a young squad led by the experienced Max Gradel, who was part of the 2015 title-winning team. The likes of Sebastien Haller, Nicolas Pepe, Ibrahim Snagare, and Franck Kessie should make qualification easy for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Nigeria have been accused many times for underachieving at the tournament. They have reigning African Player of the Year Victor Osimhen in their strike force, so they are expected to get through. They are making their 20th AFCON appearance and are eyeing a fourth continental title.

Equatorial Guinea finished fourth in 2015, so they could be a problem for the two fancied nations. They have exciting players who play across Europe.

Guinea-Bissau will be playing in their fourth AFCON tournament and they will face the hosts in the opening game, which is daunting. Their clash with Equatorial Guinea will be huge if they both lose to the West African giants.

The tournament hosts are favourites to top Group A, while the Djurtus seek group-stage progress for the first time.

The pressure is on Jean-Louis Gasset’s Elephants when they take to the field on Saturday as AFCON 2023 commences, keen to impose themselves against Guinea-Bissau.

The West African side partook in qualifying despite being assured of a spot at the finals, finishing second after ending level with Zambia on 13 points, winning four of their six games (one loss).

Ivory Coast have group-stage history on their side, having progressed from that phase in eight of the previous nine times they have played at the Cup of Nations, and they seek to boost their prospects of making it nine in 10 with a strong showing against Guinea-Bissau.

Gasset’s troops wiped the floor with Sierra Leone in their tune-up game, claiming a 5-1 victory over the Leone Stars last weekend, as they impressed with their decisive execution in the final third.

Carrying that form into Saturday’s AFCON opener with the expectant home support is anyone’s guess, but their goalscoring form at least gives the Elephants reason to be optimistic in the lead-up to facing Guinea-Bissau.

Sebastine Brodericks-Imasuen, who led the Golden Eaglets to win the inaugural U-17 World Cup in 1985 is dead.

PUNCH reports that the late Nigerian coach was on life support at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for over a year.

Brodericks-Imasuen, 85, had been diagnosed with Ischemic stroke in December 2022 and had been receiving treatment before he took his last breath, our correspondent gathered.

Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks or narrows an artery leading to the brain.

The blood clot often forms in arteries damaged by the buildup of plaques (atherosclerosis).

One of the players Brodericks-Imasuen trained at the 1989 U17 World Cup in Scotland, Bamidele Oguntuashe, first broke the news before another confirmation came from Harrison Jalla, the Chairman, of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria Task Force through a WhatsApp post.

Jalla quoted family sources for the death of the iconic coach who had been bed-ridden for some months now.

He reportedly suffered from a stroke and diabetes.

The late coach was one of the football players who represented  Nigeria at the Mexico Olympic Games in 1968 and famously scored from a free kick to win the then Challenge Cup for Bendel Insurance in 1972.

As a coach, he was the head of a three-man crew that included Bala Shamaki and Christian Chukwu when the Nigerian team shocked the world in China in 1985.

He led the team again in 1987 to Canada and got to the final before losing through a penalty shoot-out to the then-Soviet Union.

At the third attempt in the competition, his team lost to Saudi Arabia by a penalty kick in the quarter-finals.

At another time, he was the assistant to Clemens Westerhof in the Super Eagles.

He began his football career in 1956 when as a student, he featured for the Onitsha team in the Challenge Cup.

In 1962, he joined the then ECN and was part of the Challenge Cup-winning side of 1965.

He was invited to the national team in 1962 but only became a regular in the build-up to the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.

He was noted for his curving shots, especially from free-kick situations.

Popularly called ‘Sabara’, his biggest moment as a club player was when he scored the winning goal in the 3-2 victory for Bendel Insurance in the replay of the 1972 Challenge Cup with Mighty Jets of Jos at the Liberty Stadium – the first time the national cup final was held outside Lagos.

He later became a coach and handled the Midwest junior side to win a gold medal at the inaugural National Sports Festival in 1973.

The Super Eagles Camp for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has opened in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Coach Jose Peseiro has already named 25 players for the competition which begins mid-January in the West African Nation of Cote d’Ivoire.

Barring one home-based player, the other invitees are expected in camp from their different European bases.

But Samuel Chukwueze of AC Milan, goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, William Troost-Ekong, and Sadiq Umar of Real Sociedad have been granted permission to feature for their sides in games later Tuesday. They will then hit the camp on Wednesday.

Nigeria will be in the oil-rich nation for a week as they fine-tune plans for the biennial football showpiece. The Super Eagles are in Group A of the competition alongside hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea.

Their first game is against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, January 15th, 2024 before they square off against Cote d’Ivoire four days later. After this, the three-time AFCON winners take the battle to Guinea-Bissau on Monday, January 22.

Nigeria are coming into the competition on the back of a poor start to the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign. The Super Eagles only managed two points from the same number of games against lowly-rated Lesotho and Zimbabwe in late 2023.

The development, as expected, triggered calls for the sack of Peseiro with many fans and pundits questioning the Portuguese gaffer’s tactical acumen to lead one of the continent’s most talented football teams.

Despite this, football authorities in Nigeria say sacking the Portuguese weeks before a major tournament is an unwise move.

While Peseiro is going into the competition under pressure, the former Al-Ahly coach is upbeat about the Super Eagles’ chances of taking another continental title eleven years after Nigeria won it in South Africa.

“We will fight to win the Africa Cup even though it won’t be easy,” Peseiro told NFF TV.

“Our group is not easy because we are up against the Ivory Coast, who have a good squad and are playing at home.

“Equatorial Guinea reached the quarter-final at the last AFCON, better than Nigeria, while Guinea Bissau beat us at home (in the qualifiers). We have to be at our best in our trainings and in our matches.”

The company, which backed the European Super League, A22, has launched a new proposal for men’s and women’s European competitions.

The proposal is a league system with 64 men’s clubs across three leagues with participation based on sporting merit and no permanent members.

The women’s competition would include 32 clubs across two leagues.

It comes after the European Court of Justice said banning clubs from joining a European Super League was unlawful.

A case was brought by the ESL and its backers claiming Uefa and Fifa were breaking competition law by threatening to sanction those who joined the breakaway league.

Europe’s highest court found against the governing bodies but said that did not mean a breakaway league would “necessarily be approved”.

But the ruling has opened the door for new proposals to be put forward and for clubs to look to organise and manage European football competitions.

No clubs or prize money have yet been announced in the A22 proposal but an annual promotion and relegation system would be in place.

In the men’s competition, the top tiers – the Star League and the Gold League – would each consist of 16 teams while the Blue League, the bottom tier, would consist of 32 clubs.

Fans would also be able to watch live matches for free on a new digital streaming platform.

An eight-year-old girl has been crowned best female player at the European blitz chess championships.

Bodhana Sivanandan, from Harrow, north-west London, scored 8.5/13 at the event in Croatia, finishing ahead of seasoned professionals in the process.

She defeated an international master and drew a grandmaster, in a result described as “unbelievable”.

The chess prodigy, who began playing aged five, said she was “proud” of her performance over the weekend.

The tournament was held at the blitz time control – a quick form of chess where players have just minutes on their clocks for their moves.

Chair of the board at English Chess Federation (ECF) Stephen Woodhouse said: “In essence, there are three types of timings in a chess game – standard, rapid play and blitz”.

“A blitz game usually varies from three minutes to five minutes, so it’s very quick,” he explained.

Bodhana’s opponents included grandmasters – the highest title given to the world’s strongest players – international masters and experts.

“I always try my best to win, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t,” Bodhana told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“I was very proud of myself when I got top girl in the European blitz.”

Asked if she gets nervous, she replied: “No, I just play the board.”

The chess world quickly praised her performance.

Romanian International Master Irina Bulmaga, one of the players Bodhana finished ahead of, wrote on X that it was an “unbelievable result” and added “what a phenomenon she is”.

British International Master and commentator Lawrence Trent described Bodhana as “one of the greatest talents I’ve witnessed in recent memory”.

“The maturity of her play, her sublime touch, it’s truly breath taking,” he wrote on X.

“I have no doubt she will be England’s greatest player and most likely one of the greatest the game has ever seen,” Mr Trent added.

Other child chess prodigies

  • Judit Polgar, born in 1976, became a grand master aged 15. She retired from competitive chess in 2014. She was the youngest of her three sisters, who all played international chess.
  • Magnus Carlsen, born in 1990, became world champion aged 23. He was taught to play at the age of 5 and became grand master by the age of 14.
  • Hou Yifan, born in 1994, became youngest ever female grand master at the age of 14.

Siva Sivanandan said his daughter was “trying her best and it has worked in favour of her”.

“She likes chess and she likes travelling. We keep trying and keep going,” he added.

Bodhana will next compete at the International Chess Congress in Hastings, one of the world’s longest running tournaments, on 28 December.
