Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday commissioned the Professor Wole Soyinka–Laderin Train Station Road in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, with a pledge to inaugurate twenty additional roads as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of the state.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 3.5-kilometre road, Governor Abiodun said his administration had, since inception, prioritised infrastructure development across the three senatorial districts, disclosing that no fewer than one thousand, six hundred kilometres of roads have been constructed and rehabilitated in the last six years.

The governor assured that his administration would remain focused and undistracted in delivering its campaign promises, adding that the ongoing reconstruction of the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road would be completed by September.

He noted that sustained investment in road infrastructure has boosted the state’s economy, with Internally Generated Revenue growing from four billion naira in 2019 to over seventeen billion naira in 2025.

Governor Abiodun explained that the road was reconstructed to ease access to the train station, which records between one hundred thousand and one hundred and fifty thousand passengers daily travelling to Lagos, Abuja, and other parts of the country. He added that the road would also serve as an alternative route into the state and reduce pressure on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sustained investments in rail and road infrastructure, which he said have strengthened national integration and economic growth, and urged residents to protect the road to ensure its durability.

In a welcome remark, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Akinsanya, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Lateef Yusuf, described the road as vital to connecting Ogun State to other parts of the country through the rail station.

Osun State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo has remanded three suspects arrested in connection with the murder of an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Command, Lasisi Oluwamayokun, and her daughter, Adesewa, at the Ilesa Correctional Centre until 6th February.

The suspects, Gboyega Daramola, 39, Sunday James, 38, and Fajemirokun Victor, 36, were arraigned before the presiding magistrate, O. A. Daramola, on Friday.

They were brought before the court by the Osun State Commissioner of Police, who filed a motion ex-parte seeking an order to remand the defendants pending legal advice from the Ministry of Justice.

In an affidavit in support of the motion, deposed to by the Investigating Police Officer, Inspector Babawale Taiwo urged the court to remand the defendants while awaiting advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution.

Inspector Taiwo cited the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Osun State, 2018, noting that a court order was required to remand the suspects in a correctional centre pending the outcome of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution.

Recall that Oluwamayokun, 38, and her daughter went missing on 2nd November, 2025, after leaving their residence at Obasanjo Hilltop Estate, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

They were later confirmed dead after allegedly being lured by a man-friend of the deceased, Victor Fajemirokun, who was subsequently arrested.

Meanwhile, Fajemirokun reportedly admitted to luring the victims to their deaths at the hands of ritualists in Osun State when he was paraded by the Police alongside two herbalists, Gboyega Daramola and Sunday James, at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo.

Late Oluwamayokun and her daughter, Adesewa, had recently been buried at St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Ita-Olookan, Osogbo.

The Ogun State Government has confirmed the remand in prison of a medical doctor for allegedly issuing a fake medical report to help a popular blogger, Adetoun Onajobi, also known as @justadetoun, evade police arrest.

The doctor has since been arrested and charged for fraudulent medical documentation and obstruction of justice, while investigations continue to identify other accomplices, as Adetoun remained at large.

The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Oluwashina Ogungbade in a statement, said that Police investigations later revealed that the medical report was fraudulent, as the doctor who authored it allegedly confessed that he never met, examined or treated Adetoun, contrary to the claims in the report.

Mr Ogungbade also made it known that the Ogun State Police Command has filed a six-count charge against the blogger, who is currently on the run, following a petition lodged against her.

He explained that Adetoun, an internet personality, had over the years been accused of bullying, harassment and using offensive language against individuals on social media platforms.

According to him, the matter escalated following an accident involving boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, in Ogun State, when Adetoun allegedly posted videos claiming there was no ambulance service anywhere in the state and further accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of being in Ghana, partying and impregnating women instead of attending to the boxer’s welfare.

He described the allegations as false, malicious and misleading, stressing that Ogun State operates several state-owned and state-supported ambulance services.

The State Attorney-General who noted that such claims posed a public safety risk by misinforming residents about available healthcare services, stated that , government consequently reported Adetoun to the Police for alleged violations of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015.

Mr Ogungbade said that the Police reportedly invited her for questioning on January 5, 2026, after issuing a formal notice on January 2, and she failed to honour the invitation and allegedly went into hiding, despite earlier boasting that she had evidence to substantiate her claims.

He further said that while in hiding, Adetoun reportedly released another video claiming she was ill and unable to report to the Police, and subsequently, her lawyer submitted a letter to the Police, attaching a medical report from a Lagos-based doctor, stating that she was medically indisposed.

Mr Ogungbade also alleged that Adetoun had previously bullied a woman sweeping an estate in Lagos and unlawfully filmed and shared images of the woman’s underage child on social media.

The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the state government to liaise with the federal government and the military hierarchy to provide an alternative shooting range for the Nigerian Army.

This is to resolve the alleged land encroachment by officers of the Nigerian Army, Sappers Barracks, Ilese, affecting Apunren-Ijebu and other communities.

The resolution followed a report by the House Committee of the Whole, presented by Deputy Speaker, Mrs Bolanle Ajayi.

Mrs Àjàyí moved the motion for it’s adoption, seconded by the majority leader, Mr Lukuman Adeleye, and unanimously supported by members through a voice vote during the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly Complex,Oke Mosan , Abeokuta.

The report revealed that the lingering land dispute between the Nigerian Army and the communities of Apunren – Ijebu and Ijebu -Mushin had persisted for about five decades.

According to the spokesperson of the communities, Retired Major General Odunsi Samson, the dispute originated in 1977 following a military decree establishing barracks across various states in the country.

The report revealed that the Army’s failure to properly document and gazette the reduced land allocation, leading to encroachment on host communities.

The report recommended that the state government should engage senior military authorities to review the decision reached earlier by the panel to prevent further encroachment.

The Speaker directed the clerk of the House to forward the copies of the report to the state governor, federal ministries, and Heads of security formations for necessary action.

INEC Releases final list of Governorship, Deputy Governorship candidates for June 20 Election in Ekiti State

The Independent National Electoral Commission has released the final list of governorship and deputy governorship candidates for the June 20 election in Ekiti State.

However, the names of the Peoples’ Democratic party Candidate, Dr Wole Oluyede and his  Social Democratic Party counterpart, David Bankole were missing from the list which have twelve other candidates.

The final list was posted on the INEC notice board at the commission’s state headquarters in Ado Ekiti.

Spokesperson for the PDP candidate, Mr Gani Salau, expressed confidence that Dr Oluyede would still participate, noting that the party has filed two court cases: one seeking a stay of execution/appeal against the court order for fresh PDP primaries, and another requesting that INEC publish Oluyede’s name as the party’s candidate for the governorship election.

Similarly, SDP State Chairman, Ayodele Bamikole, said the party would pursue legal avenues to ensure its candidate is included in the list.

INEC had released a provisional list on December 29, 2025, giving parties until January 12, 2026, to make corrections or substitutions before publishing the final list in line with election guidelines.

The federal High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti had last week nullified the PDP primary election conducted in November last year which produced Dr Wole Oluyede as its Governorship candidate and ordered the conduct of a fresh primary.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Head Coach of Senegal’s Teranga Lions, Pape Thiaw, following chaotic scenes during Sunday’s final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Senegal emerged champions of Africa after defeating the host nation, the Atlas Lions of Morocco, in a tense and controversial final played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat.

The match ended goalless in regulation time before Pape Gueye struck four minutes into extra time to give Senegal a decisive 1–0 lead.

However, drama erupted deep into second-half stoppage time when Morocco were awarded a penalty.

The decision triggered heated protests, culminating in Coach Pape Thiaw ordering Senegalese players to walk off the pitch in protest.

The situation threatened to derail the final before Senegal captain and star forward, Sadio Mané, intervened and persuaded his teammates to return from the dressing room, allowing the match to be concluded.

CAF’s decision to suspend Coach Thiaw followed a review of the incident, citing breaches of conduct and failure to uphold the integrity of the game during a high-profile continental final.

Despite the controversy, Senegal held on to secure their AFCON crown, sealing a historic triumph marked by both footballing excellence and dramatic confrontation.

The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has strongly condemned the dangerous act of scooping fuel from a fallen tanker, following an incident on Monday, January 20, at Liverpool Bridge, Apapa, Lagos State.

In a statement issued by the Director of Communication and Media, Mr Bala Musa, the NOA described the act as reckless, irresponsible, and completely unacceptable, warning that it poses a severe and avoidable threat to human life, public safety, and critical national infrastructure.

Mallam Issa-Onilu stated that the danger extends far beyond those directly involved in fuel scooping, emphasising that motorists, nearby communities, emergency responders, and public assets are also exposed to a grave risk.

“The collateral danger to motorists, surrounding communities, emergency personnel, and critical infrastructure is enormous and far outweighs any perceived benefit,” he said.

The NOA Director General noted that the agency has, over the years, carried out sustained nationwide sensitisation and public enlightenment campaigns to educate Nigerians on the dangers of fuel scooping and similar high-risk behaviours.

However, he expressed concern that despite repeated warnings, advocacy efforts, and value-reorientation programmes, some individuals continue to engage in what he described as a dangerous and life-threatening practice.

Mallam Issa-Onilu stated unequivocally that the behaviour cannot be justified under any circumstances, dismissing attempts to attribute it to poverty.

“This is not poverty. Poverty does not remove a person’s sense of judgment or instinct for self-preservation. What we are witnessing is a conscious, reckless, and criminal disregard for human life and public safety,” he said.

He recalled several past tragedies across the country where fallen fuel tankers exploded after people attempted to scoop fuel, leading to massive infernos and the loss of hundreds of lives.

According to him, these repeated incidents underline the fact that the menace is recurrent, preventable, and must no longer be tolerated.

The NOA Director General, therefore, called on the National Assembly to urgently initiate and pass comprehensive legislation that explicitly criminalises fuel scooping from fallen tankers, with clear and deterrent penalties for offenders.

He stressed that public enlightenment alone is no longer sufficient and must be reinforced with strong legal and enforcement mechanisms to end the deadly practice.

“Human life is sacred and priceless. No situation, excuse, or momentary gain should justify conduct that places lives in immediate danger,” he said.

Mallam Issa-Onilu urged Nigerians to collectively reject actions that repeatedly result in mass casualties, national trauma, and avoidable loss of lives, while reaffirming the agency’s commitment to intensifying value-reorientation and safety advocacy nationwide.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the charges before the Abeokuta Division of the Federal High Court stemmed from allegations that the suspect used social media to spread false claims and cyberbully the Ogun State Governor, contrary to the Cybercrimes Act.

The warning came after a diesel tanker overturned on the bridge, inward Mile 2, causing fuel to spill and blocking traffic along the busy corridor.

In an urgent situation report on Monday, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the tanker was leaking fuel and that emergency responders had been deployed to the scene.

“Our attention has been brought to a fallen tanker at the above location, which is leaking fuel. All emergency responders have been activated and are en route to the location,” the statement read.

LASEMA cautioned members of the public against dangerous behaviour around the incident scene.

“Members of the public are urged to exercise EXTREME CAUTION to avoid any secondary incident from scooping product or lighting any flame near the area,” the agency warned.

Motorists were also advised to avoid the axis.

“Motorists are advised to take alternative routes. Disaster management plan has been activated. Updates to follow,” the statement added.

Videos circulating on social media showed residents scooping diesel from the fallen tanker despite the obvious risk.

Also reacting, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed that the tanker was loaded with diesel and that the spill was spreading on the bridge due to damage to the tank.

“There’s a fallen tanker loaded with diesel on top Liverpool Bridge inward Mile 2. The diesel is spreading on the bridge as a result of the damaged tank,” LASTMA said in a statement on its official X handle.

The authority said security agencies had been alerted and traffic diverted to reduce the risk to commuters.

“Men of Nigerian Police Force from Area B and other safety agencies have been swiftly notified. Traffic has been diverted to that other side of the bridge for safety measures,” the statement said.

LASTMA urged motorists to comply with traffic officials on ground.

“Please adhere strictly to all instructions from the traffic managers,” it added.

At least 39 people have died in a train collision in southern Spain and dozens more have been injured in the country’s worst rail crash in more than a decade, according to Spain’s Civil Guard.

Carriages on a Madrid-bound train derailed and crossed over to the opposite tracks, colliding with an oncoming train in Adamuz, near the city of Córdoba.

According to Andalusia’s emergency services four hundred passengers and staff were onboard both trains, the rail networks said. At least 73 people were taken to hospital, 24 of them seriously injured, including four children.

Spanish Transport Minister, Óscar Puente described the incident as “extremely strange” as officials launched an investigation.

All the railway experts consulted by the government “are extremely baffled by the accident”, Puente told reporters in Madrid.

Rail network operator Adif said the collision happened at 19:45 local time (18:45 GMT), about an hour after the train left Málaga heading to Madrid, when it derailed on a straight stretch of track.

The force of the crash pushed the carriages of the second train into an embankment, Puente said. He added that most of those killed and injured were in the front carriages of the second train, which was travelling from Madrid to Huelva.

The type of train involved in the crash was a Freccia 1000, which can reach top speeds of 400 km/h (250 mph), a spokesperson for the Italian rail company Ferrovie dello Stato told the Reuters news agency.

Rescue teams said the twisted wreckage of the trains made it difficult to recover people trapped inside the carriages.

Córdoba fire chief Francisco Carmona told Spanish public broadcaster RTVE: “We have even had to remove a dead person to be able to reach someone alive. It is hard, tricky work.”

Salvador Jimenez, a journalist with RTVE who was on one of the trains, said the impact felt like an “earthquake”.

“I was in the first carriage. There was a moment when it felt like an earthquake and the train had indeed derailed,” Jimenez said.

Footage from the scene appears to show some train carriages had tipped over on their sides. Rescue workers can be seen scaling the train to pull people out of the lopsided train doors and windows.

A Madrid-bound passenger, José, told public broadcaster Canal Sur: “There were people and screaming, calling for doctors.”

All rail services between Madrid and Andalusia were suspended following the accident and are expected to remain closed all day on Monday.

Iryo, a private rail company that operated the journey from Málaga, said around 300 passengers were on board the train that first derailed, while the other train operated by the state funded firm Renfe had around 100 passengers.

The official cause is not yet known. An investigation is not expected to determine what happened for at least a month, according to the transport minister.

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, said the country will endure a “night of deep pain”.

The mayor of Adamuz, Rafael Moreno, was one of the first people on the scene of the accident, describing it as “a nightmare”.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia said they were following news of the disaster “with great concern”.

“We extend our most heartfelt condolences to the relatives and loved ones of the dead, as well as our love and wishes for a swift recovery to the injured,” the royal palace said on X.

The emergency agency in the region of Andalusia urged any crash survivors to contact their families or post on social media that they are alive.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, Mr Femi Haruna, has directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations to deploy the Anti-Kidnapping Squad and other tactical teams to the area.

The police said bush-combing operations were ongoing, while investigations had been intensified to rescue the abducted expatriate and arrest those responsible for the attack.

In a related development, the command also announced the arrest of four suspects in connection with cases of defilement, murder, and unlawful possession of suspected human parts across the state.

DSP Ayanlade said one of the suspects, identified as Usman Azeez, was arrested in Ado-Awaye for the alleged defilement of a 14-year-old girl.

He said the suspect was currently in police custody as investigations continued.

The police spokesperson also disclosed that operatives arrested another suspect, Abdulraheem Koni, in connection with the alleged murder of his former employer, Lateef Giwa.

The case was reported at the Tede Police Division, and the suspect is presently being detained.

The statement further confirmed the arrest of another suspect over an alleged murder in Ibadan, where the victim later died from injuries sustained during an altercation.

The corpse has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

The police also arrested a commercial driver along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Guru Maharaji Village for unlawful possession of items suspected to be human parts, recovered during a routine stop-and-search operation.

The command said investigations were ongoing in all the cases, adding that suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated Pharaohs of Egypt 4–2 on penalties to win bronze at the 2025 African Cup of Nations, AFCON in Casablanca after a goalless, VAR-marred playoff.

Super Eagles Coach, Eric Chelle, rotated his squad, leaving Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman on the bench, while Akor Adams and Paul Onuachu led the line.

Nigeria twice thought they had scored: Adams’ 36th-minute header was ruled out after VAR showed Onuachu fouled in the build-up, while Lookman later saw his strike chalked off for offside.

With chances limited and defences on top, the game went to penalties.

Super Eagles’ Stanley Nwabali then took centre stage, saving efforts from Mohamed Salah and Oumar Marmoush before Lookman fired the winning kick.

The victory secured Nigeria’s ninth AFCON third-place finish and maintained their perfect record in bronze-medal playoffs.

The final of the 2025 AFCON will be decided on Sunday as the Teranga Lions of Senagal take on hosts, Atlas Lions of Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat by 8:00pm.
