The Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Pastor Victor Akande, has declared that the party would record a decisive victory in the 8th August governorship election, insisting that the All Progressives Congress ,APC and its candidate pose no threat.

Pastor Akande made the declaration during News Point, a programme organised by the Osun NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in Osogbo.

He explained that, Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is the Accord’s Governorship candidate, has performed creditably in office and has demonstrated enough capacity to earn a second term.

Pastor Akande who noted that the APC’s previous tenure in the state worked against the party, said residents could clearly distinguish between its record in office and the current administration, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and social welfare.

The State Accord Party Chairman stressed that the APC’s rejection was evident in the 2022 governorship election and predicted a repeat in 2026.

On grassroots mobilisation, Mr. Akande said the party has functional structures across all local governments in the state and has commenced voter sensitisation to ensure widespread awareness of its candidature.

He added that efforts were being made to reach elderly voters and rural dwellers that may not have access to social media and power supply.

A Nigerian varsity, Babcock University in Ogun State, has introduced a new and stricter dress and grooming code for its students ahead of forthcoming examinations, banning dreadlocks, beards, and other unapproved hairstyles.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Vice President for Student Development, Olanivi Arije, the university announced the cancellation of all hair-pass permits previously in circulation.

According to the statement, hair-pass tags — documents issued to students as waivers for certain hairstyles — are illegal and do not grant any valid or legitimate right to keep unapproved hairstyles on any of the university’s campuses.

The management declared that “the use, circulation, or recognition of hair-pass in any form is henceforth outlawed at Babcock University with immediate effect”.

It added that the new regulations will take effect from the beginning of the second semester in January and will be strictly enforced across all campuses.

“Students currently in possession of any form of hair-pass or exemption are directed to disregard and discontinue its use immediately. Any student found presenting, using, or relying on such a document shall be investigated for the violation of University regulations and, if found liable, shall face the inevitable consequence accordingly,” the statement said.

The university further stated that male students are prohibited from keeping voluminous or unkempt hair, beards and dreadlocks, while female students are not permitted to wear extreme, indecent or inconsistent hairstyles.

It also listed body-hugging outfits, sleeveless blouses or dresses, sagging trousers, as well as baggy, boot-cut or over-length trousers as prohibited.

This policy follows a trend among Nigerian universities, like Benue State University, BSU, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Adekunle Ajasin University, which have also implemented strict dress codes, sparking debate and controversy over personal expression and student discipline.

The management added that tying scarves to corporate or official academic wear is not allowed at certain times, while outfits such as bubu, danshiki, joggers, sportswear or walk-out wear are banned during stipulated periods.

Babcock warned that any student found in possession of prohibited items on campus would face disciplinary action.

The University will not entertain excuses, appeals or claims of ignorance. All students are expected to resume fully compliant with these regulations,” the statement added.

The Command warned members of the public to remain vigilant around rivers, streams, dams, swimming pools, and other water facilities, noting a disturbing rise in reported cases.

In a statement signed by the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the Command said the increase in drowning incidents necessitated an urgent public safety advisory.

Speaking at the official launch of the emblem for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Governor Adeleke praised the bravery and sacrifices of military personnel who have defended Nigeria’s sovereignty across multiple theatres of conflict.

Reflecting on the nation’s journey, the governor recalled the roles played by the armed forces from the Nigerian Civil War to peacekeeping and internal security operations in different parts of the country, noting that their commitment has remained unwavering in the face of daunting challenges.

He said the 2026 theme, “United for Peace, Security, and National Unity,” highlights the urgent need for collective action in building a peaceful and secure Nigeria where citizens can live without fear and communities can thrive irrespective of ethnic or religious differences.

‎Governor Adeleke urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the courage and resilience of serving personnel and veterans, stressing the importance of recognising and supporting ex-servicemen who have served the nation with distinction.

‎He called on citizens to use the occasion of the emblem launch as a reminder of their civic responsibility to promote peace, security and national unity, adding that only through collective effort can Nigeria achieve justice, equity and sustainable development.

‎Earlier, the Osun State Legion Chairman, Comrade Julius Oyarekun had appealed to the state government to increase his donations to make life better for the families of the fallen heroes and those with scars of war.

Russia has reportedly deployed a submarine and other vessels to escort an oil tanker which is also being pursued by US forces across the Atlantic.

The ship, currently between Iceland and the British Isles, has been accused of breaking US sanctions and shipping Iranian oil.

It has historically transported Venezuelan crude oil but is reporting to be empty at the moment.

Previously named Bella 1, its name has been changed to Marinera and it has also reportedly been reflagged from a Guyanese to a Russian vessel.

President Donald Trump said last month that he was ordering a “blockade” of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, a move the government there described as “theft”.

Meanwhile, several US military aircraft have been tracked over the North Atlantic in the area where the Marinera is reportedly being pursued by US authorities.

Data from sites such as FlightRadar24 show a US air-to-air refuelling tanker and several other aircraft used by US Air Force Special Operations Command for reconnaissance and other specialist missions, according to BBC Verify.

On Tuesday two US officials have confirmed to CBS News, the BBC’s US media partner, that Russia has sent a submarine and other navy vessels to escort the tanker.

The US Coast Guard tried to board it last month in the Caribbean when it was believed to be heading towards Venezuela. The Coast Guard had a warrant to seize the ship over its alleged breaking of sanctions.

Before it could be boarded, the vessel dramatically changed course and its approach to Europe has coincided with the arrival of around 10 US military transport aircraft as well as helicopters.

Russia says it is “monitoring with concern” the situation around the ship.

“At present, our vessel is sailing in the international waters of the North Atlantic under the state flag of the Russian Federation and in full compliance with the norms of international maritime law,” its foreign ministry said.

“For reasons unclear to us, the Russian ship is being given increased and clearly disproportionate attention by the US and Nato military, despite its peaceful status,” it said.

Two US officials told CBS News earlier on Tuesday that American forces were planning to board the ship, and that Washington preferred to seize it rather than sink it.

BBC Verify has been looking at footage released by Russia Today, reportedly taken onboard an oil tanker, which shows a ship in the distance matching the profile of a US Coast Guard Legend-class cutter.

It has also been monitoring the latest reported location of the Marinera. According to AIS location data from ship-tracking platform Marine Traffic, its location as of Tuesday morning was in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 300km (186 miles) south of Iceland’s shoreline.

Previous AIS tracking data suggests it travelled north, past the western coast of the UK over the past two days.

The Silent Trap of Chasing Money

At the beginning of a new year, many people reset their goals, redraw their plans, and recommit to “making it big.”

Most of those resolutions, if we’re honest, revolve around money—earning more, spending better, building wealth faster.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

Money is important. It opens doors, solves problems, and creates opportunities.

But when money becomes the only thing driving us, it quietly becomes a dangerous master.

When wealth is the sole motivation, values begin to bend.

Integrity becomes optional.

Conscience gets muted.

People become stepping stones rather than fellow humans.

In that desperate chase, it becomes easy to justify cutting corners, telling lies, exploiting others, or compromising deeply held principles—just to “get ahead.”

A Timeless Warning We Often Ignore

Jesus gave a sobering reminder that cuts through all the noise:

“A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” (Luke 12:15)

That statement is both liberating and provocative.

It challenges the popular belief that success can be measured by bank balances, assets, or status symbols.

It forces us to ask an uncomfortable question: If everything I own disappears today, what is left of me?

Lives That Prove Money Isn’t the Measure

History and everyday life are filled with examples that prove this truth.

Take Mother Teresa, for instance.

She owned almost nothing by the world’s standards. No estates. No luxury. No impressive personal wealth.

Yet her life continues to inspire generations across cultures and religions.

Why?

Because she poured herself into loving the unloved—touching lepers, caring for the dying, and restoring dignity to people society had discarded.

By financial metrics, she had little.

By eternal and human standards, she was immeasurably rich.

Or consider Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison.

Those were years that could have been spent building wealth, advancing a career, or accumulating comfort.

Instead, he emerged with forgiveness in his heart rather than bitterness, choosing reconciliation over revenge.

That decision shaped a nation and earned him global respect.

His greatness was not rooted in possessions but in character.

Everyday Heroes Among Us

Closer to home, we all know people who may not have much materially, yet they live full, meaningful lives.

The teacher who pours into students despite modest pay.

The parent who sacrifices personal comfort to raise children with values.

The neighbor who shows up consistently with kindness, honesty, and compassion.

These lives remind us that tangible success is not always loud, flashy, or wealthy—but it is deeply impactful.

When Wealth Fails To Deliver Fulfillment

On the other hand, we also see the opposite.

People with money, influence, and status who are perpetually restless, insecure, and unfulfilled.

They keep chasing the next deal, the next upgrade, the next validation—yet peace remains elusive.

Because money can buy comfort, but it cannot purchase purpose.

It can fund pleasure, but it cannot guarantee peace.

A Fresh Perspective for A New Beginning

As you step into this New Year, this is a powerful moment to adopt a fresh outlook and a healthier perspective.

Set financial goals, yes—but don’t let money define your worth or dictate your ethics.

Let purpose lead.

Let values guide ambition.

Let integrity set the boundaries of your pursuit.

Measure success not only by what you accumulate, but by who you become.

Ask yourself: Am I kinder? More honest? More compassionate? More useful to others than I was last year?

Because at the end of the journey, what you contribute and the lives you touch will speak louder than what you own.

The Better Way to Live

In your pursuit of a good life, don’t lose your humanity.

Be a good human.

Be genuine.

When money follows purpose, it becomes a tool.

When purpose follows money, it often becomes a trap.
