The Ogun state government has warned metal recycling companies in Ogijo not to violate the March 31, 2026 deadline to upgrade their operations with modern technology or face strict sanctions.
General Manager, Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, Mr Kehinde Bello, stated this during a stakeholders’ meeting with the company representatives and Ogijo community leaders at the Ministry of Environment, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Mr Bello said the state would permanently shut down any company that failed to comply.
While stressing that obsolete equipment have continued to endanger the safety of the communities, he noted that past administrations had issued fines, stop-work orders and closures for over fifteen years, yet compliance remained poor.
The OGEPA General Manager told community leaders that no extension of the March 2026 deadline would be considered and urged them to support government efforts to restore a safe and healthy environment in Ogijo.
Japan has protested after Chinese fighter jets locked radars on Japanese aircraft as tensions between the two nations worsened.
Locking radar onto an aircraft is considered a threat because it can signal a potential attack. Japan said there were two such incidents Saturday off its southern Okinawa islands.
Japan said it scrambled fighter jets in response to the Chinese J-15 fighter jets, while Beijing accused Tokyo of “harassing” its forces during a training exercise. No injuries or damage were reported.
Diplomatic ties between Japan and China have spiralled since last month, after Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi suggested that Tokyo could take military action if Beijing attacked Taiwan.
Beijing views self-governed Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to “reunite” with it.
Both sides have since engaged in increasingly hostile rhetoric towards each other, with the widening rift affecting daily life for citizens in both countries.
Last week, China and Japan’s coast guards gave conflicting accounts of a confrontation near disputed islands in the East China Sea.
A Japanese defence ministry official said the intention of the Chinese J-15 jets was “unclear”, but added that there was “no need” to lock on to the Japanese planes if their intention was to locate other aircraft.
The J-15 jets, which were launched from China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier, first locked its radar on Japanese jets at 16:32 local time on Saturday (07:32 GMT) and again at around 18:37.
The official added that the Japanese aircraft “did not do anything that could be considered a provocation”.
“It is extremely regrettable. Japan has strongly protested to the Chinese side, and we firmly requested measures to prevent recurrence,” Takaichi told reporters Sunday in Wajima, Ishikawa prefecture.
“We will respond calmly and resolutely,” she said.
The Chinese navy however said Japan’s claim was “completely inconsistent with the facts” and told Tokyo to “immediately stop slandering and smearing”. It added that its training exercise in the area had been previously announced.
This comes two weeks after Japan scrambled aircraft when a suspected Chinese drone was detected off Yonaguni, island near Taiwan. Tokyo has said it is planning to deploy missiles from Yonaguni in a move that has angered Beijing.
A month of heightened tensions have seen China ask its citizens to avoid travelling to Japan.
China has also banned the importation of seafood from Japan and suspended the screening of popular Japanese films.

A fire at a popular nightclub in India’s coastal region of Goa has killed 25 people, local officials say.
Police believe a gas cylinder exploded in the kitchen of the Birch nightclub, located near a popular beach. The venue was packed with revellers who had come to hear a Bollywood DJ.
Four people from the same Delhi family and 21 staff were among the victims, Goa police said, adding that most had died of suffocation.
The nightclub’s manager has been arrested and an arrest warrant for the owner has been issued.
Goa is a former Portuguese colony on the Arabian Sea. Its nightlife, sandy beaches, and resorts attract millions of tourists annually.
Eyewitnesses told the BBC of scenes of panic in the bustling nightlife area. Another eyewitness said that it was a usual Saturday night and holidaymakers were enjoying themselves.
He said: “I was outside the club when I heard screams, I didn’t initially understand what was going on.
“In a bit, it became clear that a massive fire had broken out. The scenes were just horrific.”
Though the main entrance is wide, the crossing on the small lake leading to the main structure is narrow and that made it difficult for firefighters to reach the spot.
The BBC saw what appeared to be melted remains of chairs, tables and plants in one corner of the club.
Local police chief Alok Kumar said the fire had been concentrated in the kitchen area on the ground floor.
Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told journalists three people had died from burn injuries, while others died of suffocation. Six people are in a stable condition in hospital.
A chef who works at a nearby venue told the BBC he knew some of the workers at the Birch club.
“People from all over the country and also from Nepal work in different clubs in Goa,” he said.”I am really worried for some people who I knew at the club. Their phones are off.”
On Sunday emergency teams were combing through the charred wreckage. An inquiry into the cause of the fire has been launched, the chief minister said.
“Those found responsible will face most stringent action under the law – any negligence will be dealt with firmly,” Dr Sawant said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Goa fire “deeply saddening” in a post on social media.
Republic of Benin’s government said on Sunday its armed forces had foiled a coup attempt after a group of soldiers in the West African nation claimed on national television to have seized power.
The attempted coup was the latest threat to democratic rule in the region, where the military have in recent years seized power in Benin’s neighbours Niger and Burkina Faso, as well as Mali, Guinea and, only last month, Guinea-Bissau.
At least eight soldiers, several holding weapons, went on state television on Sunday morning to announce that a military committee led by Colonel Tigri Pascal had taken over and was dissolving national institutions, suspending the constitution and closing air, land and maritime borders.
“The army solemnly commits to give the Beninese people the hope of a truly new era, where fraternity, justice and work prevail,” said a statement read by one of the soldiers.
A few hours later, Interior Minister Alassane Seidou said the West African country’s armed forces had thwarted the attempted coup.
“Therefore, the government urges the population to go about their business as usual,” he said.
Foreign Minister Olushegun Adjadi Bakari had earlier told Reuters that “a small group” of soldiers had attempted to overthrow the government but that forces loyal to President Patrice Talon were working to restore order.
He said the coup plotters had only managed to take control of state television, which was cut after the soldiers read out their statement. It resumed broadcasting shortly afterwards, allowing the interior minister to read his statement saying the coup bid had been foiled. West Africa’s regional bloc ECOWAS and the African Union condemned the coup attempt.

In Asaba, Delta State, operatives found 3.8 million tramadol tablets and 252 litres of codeine syrup in a warehouse. Another 1.2 million tramadol pills were intercepted along the Onitsha–Owerri Road in Imo State.
In Adamawa, officers seized over 1.5 million tramadol and exol-5 capsules hidden in bags of slippers, while additional arrests followed in Kano and Niger States.
Major cannabis warehouses in remote forests were destroyed in Ekiti and Ondo States, where more than 68,000kg of cannabis was either seized or set ablaze. Five suspects were arrested in Igoba forest, Ondo, with 5,442kg recovered.
Further arrests and seizures were recorded in Lagos, Abuja and Edo, including consignments of Canadian Loud, Colorado and skunk.
The NDLEA also continued its drug education campaigns in schools and communities under the WADA initiative.
A group of soldiers on Republic of Benin’s national television claimed to have seized power in the West African nation on Sunday, the latest threat to democratic norms in the unstable region.
“The army solemnly commits to give the Beninese people the hope of a truly new era, where fraternity, justice and work prevail,” said a statement read by one of the soldiers who was flanked by half a dozen others, several wearing helmets.
“The constitution is suspended. All institutions are dissolved (and) political party activities suspended until further notice.
“A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The announcement came as Benin Republic was preparing for a presidential election next April that would mark the end of the tenure of incumbent Patrice Talon, in power since 2016.
The country’s ruling coalition had nominated Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni to be its candidate, positioning a man seen as a key architect of its economic policies to pursue the administration’s current reform agenda if elected.
Talon’s decision to step down after two terms was a rare move in the West and Central Africa region where democratic norms are increasingly under pressure.
A coup last month in Guinea-Bissau was the ninth in the region since 2020.
However, Talon’s entourage said Talon, who has been president of the west African nation for 10 years and is due to step down in April, was safe.
“This is a small group of people who only control the television. The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure,” his office told AFP.
Gunmen stormed a hostel in Saulsville, 18 kilometres west of Pretoria, on Saturday, killing 11 people, including a three-year-old child, South African police said.
The attack is the latest in a string of mass shootings that have shaken the country of 63 million, South Africa Broadcasting News reports.
Police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe said: “I can confirm that a total of 25 people were shot,” adding that 14 had been hospitalised.
She explained that ten victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries in hospital. The attack also claimed the lives of a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old pupils.
Mathe described the incident: “Quite an unfortunate incident. Police were only alerted to this incident at around 6 o’clock.”
Authorities said three gunmen entered the premises at around 4:30 am (0230 GMT) and indiscriminately opened fire on a group of men who were drinking. The motive remains unknown, and no arrests have been made.
South Africa, the continent’s most industrialized nation, continues to grapple with entrenched crime and corruption driven by organised networks. While many citizens own licensed firearms for personal protection, illegal guns are widespread.
Police data indicates that between April and September, an average of 63 people were killed each day, highlighting the scale of the country’s ongoing violence.
Mathe added that investigations are ongoing.
She concluded, “We are still investigating the motive, but as I’ve indicated, maximum resources have been deployed to arrest those that are behind this incident.”

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has unveiled a new round of financial empowerment for persons with disabilities, PWDs, in Oyo State under the nationwide Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme, held to mark the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The event, held at the Local Government Training School, Secretariat, Ibadan, took place simultaneously across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
A total of 250 persons with disabilities in Oyo State received ₦200,000 each as business recapitalization grants, while the state also received a ₦50 million support fund for wider distribution within its disability community.
Represented in Ibadan by the wife of the Oyo State governor, Chief Tamunominini Makinde, Senator Tinubu said the initiative demonstrated the government’s commitment to building an economy that gives every Nigerian a sense of belonging.
“Our nation grows stronger when every individual is empowered to contribute meaningfully,” she said.
She announced that 9,500 persons with disabilities nationwide would receive a total of ₦1.9 billion, describing it as one of the largest empowerment interventions targeted at Nigerians with disabilities.
Quoting American disability rights advocate Helen Keller, she added, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. A truly inclusive society is built when we stand together and create opportunities that empower everyone to contribute their unique gifts.”
Senator Tinubu emphasised that the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises inclusive growth, social protection, and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable Nigerians.
She highlighted earlier RHI interventions, noting that more than 100,000 petty traders and small business owners, including persons with disabilities, had received direct cash grants over the past two years.
“Our Social Investment Programmes have supported victims of floods, communal clashes, disasters, the elderly, widows, and orphans of our fallen heroes,” she said. “Through our Monthly Food Outreach Scheme, food items have been delivered to 22 states and the FCT. We remain committed to doing even more.”
She further announced that the RHI Governing Board had approved that the Economic Empowerment Programme for Persons with Disabilities will now hold annually on December 3.
Senator Tinubu also expressed appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde and his wife, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, for their continued support for disability inclusion.
In his welcome address, Director-General of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Ayodele Adekanmbi, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to inclusive governance.
“Today reminds us that disability is not inability. Every individual, regardless of physical or cognitive differences, possesses immense value,” he said.
He noted that the state maintains a deliberate quota system across education, health, employment, infrastructure, and social welfare to prevent the marginalisation of persons with disabilities.
“The Agency for Persons with Disabilities remains a hub for policy implementation, empowerment, and advocacy. Our goal is a state where every person can thrive without barriers,” Mr. Adekanmbi added.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Kayode Lawal thanked the First Lady and the government for the support, promising that recipients would use the funds responsibly to grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Pioneer Special Forces Commander, Major-General Moundhey Gadzama Ali (rtd), has called on serving and retired senior officers to rally behind President Bola Tinubu’s Minister of Defence–designate, General Christopher Musa, saying unified military support is crucial to ending Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
Major-General Ali made the appeal in Lagos during a media chat.
He said the task before General Musa is enormous and requires practical input, cooperation, and honest counsel from experienced officers—not passive observation or political posturing.
He urged retired generals, infantry officers, and members of the Special Forces community to offer solutions that will strengthen the minister-designate’s capacity to defeat terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
“Let us all rally behind one of our own, General CG Musa, who has just been nominated by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to serve as Minister of Defence,” he said. “As he leads, in the spirit of ‘follow me’, let us openly provide answers to critical requirements to assist him in seeing to the end of banditry, terrorism and insurgency in our dear nation. Together, we can make the herculean task easy.”
Describing General Musa as a longtime friend and trusted colleague, Major-General Ali advised him to remain firm, focused, and immune to sycophancy, noting that Nigeria’s security crisis is fueled by powerful interests.
He urged the minister-designate to confront sponsors and enablers of criminal networks “no matter whose horse is gored.”
With Nigeria still grappling with insurgency in the North-East, banditry and kidnapping in the North-West, and emerging threats elsewhere, he said General Musa’s success will depend heavily on collective support from the officer corps.
“Towards a better Nigeria indeed,” he added, urging the military community to treat General Musa’s appointment as a national commitment, not an individual responsibility.
Major-General Ali also criticised the culture of political patronage and weak accountability in appointing and screening public officials.
He warned that Nigeria must embrace transparency and merit to earn global respect and improve governance outcomes.
He faulted security agencies for failing to present or act on available intelligence during screenings, saying such lapses damage national credibility.
“The world has gone beyond the sentiments of ‘my townsman’. This is the time of transparency, honesty, commitment and discharging one’s duties without prejudice before loyalty,” he said.
Major-General Ali’s remarks come amid high expectations that General Musa, who recently retired as Chief of Defence Staff, will bring his experience in joint operations, counter-terrorism, and defence reform to his new role as Minister of Defence.
Our correspondent reports that his nomination has been widely welcomed across security circles as a sign of continuity in the fight against insecurity.

He said Nigeria had finally aligned with global economic trends by embracing ocean-based development, noting that the country must invest in knowledge, capacity building, and coordinated governance to maximize opportunities.
He stressed the importance of adopting “non-kinetic approaches” to maritime security, including dialogue, cooperation, and joint problem-solving with coastal communities.
According to him, Nigeria’s ocean governance should follow the United Nations’ multi-stakeholder model, with authorities working closely with community-based organizations, civil society groups, local stakeholders, and traditional institutions.
In his opening remarks, Director-General of the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION), Rear Admiral Thaddeus Udofia (rtd), described the training as a critical step toward strengthening Nigeria’s maritime sector amid global environmental and security challenges.
He said the course was designed to deepen participants’ understanding of marine governance, enhance institutional capacity, and promote a unified national strategy for managing ocean resources.
Rear Admiral Udofia emphasized that solving maritime challenges requires not just policies and infrastructure but a well-informed cadre of professionals equipped to drive sustainable development.
The three-day training brought together naval officers and stakeholders from various institutions.
Our correspondent reports that the IMION Advanced Course will examine contemporary frameworks for blue economy development, scientific perspectives, emerging technologies, and practical strategies for balancing environmental protection with economic growth.

He unveiled the trademark at the Oyo State International Agribusiness Summit 2025, held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, with the theme “Expanding Oyo State’s Economy Through Agricultural Industrialization.”

He stressed that agricultural industrialization remains a critical pathway to achieving inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
Calling for a strategic shift in Oyo State’s economic planning, the governor urged stakeholders to balance import substitution with aggressive pursuit of export opportunities.
Foreign dignitaries—including the Ambassador of Belgium to Nigeria and the Consul General of Denmark—commended the governor’s innovative approach to agribusiness and pledged stronger bilateral partnerships.

Governor Makinde later toured exhibition stands alongside other dignitaries at the summit, which convened global, national, and local stakeholders exploring the next frontier of agricultural industrialization in West Africa.
