The African Church Primate, the Most Reverend Julius Abbe says wealthy individuals should care more about the plight of the less privileged.

The Most Reverend Abbe stated this at the funeral service of Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief Alaba Lawson held at the Cathedral of St James African Church, Abeokuta, Ogun State. 

The Most Reverend Abbe described the late Alaba Lawson as not just a reputable industrialist but also a well-known philanthropist, pointing out that her death had left a vacuum that would be difficult to fill. 

The clergyman, who said Chief Alaba Lawson’s stride was worth emulating, appealed to those occupying positions of authority to urgently alleviate the untold hardship endured by the people, following the removal of subsidy on petroleum products. 

In a remark during the service, Governor Dapo Abiodun promised that the state government would do the needful to sustain the legacy of the late Iyalode of Yorubaland.

Some of the dignitaries at the event including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senator Ibikunle Amosun encouraged the deceased family to take solace in the fact that the late Chief Alaba Lawson made laudable impacts on humanity during her seventy-two years on earth. 

Representatives of the Oyo Alaafin and Ife traditional councils and other notable Nigerians including the juju music icon, Chief Ebenezer Obey – Fabiyi and Ambassador Sarafa Ishola also witnessed the service. 

The remains of Chief Lawson who died on October 28 were later committed to Mother Earth at a restricted ceremony witnessed by close relatives.

It was an evening of eulogies and an outpouring of emotions as dignitaries from far and wide converged on Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital to pay their last respect to the late Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief Alaba Oluwaseun Lawson. 

Those who spoke about the deceased at the evening of tributes as part of the week-long funeral programme for the late industrialist depicted her as a likeable personality, who was very humane, full of positive energy and ever willing to make an impact on everyone and everything around her. 

The dignitaries, associates family and friends of the late first female national President of NACCIMA were unanimous in their submissions, describing Chief Alaba Lawson as a phenomenal being whose memory and legacies would linger among the living. 

In a remark, the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, represented by his Deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako Oyedele extended the condolences of the State Government to the Family, Friends and associates and maintained that the extra-ordinary achievements of the foremost industrialist were an inspiration to all.

Governor Abiodun appreciated the efforts of the deceased women leader who according to him, was a great supporter of his administration. 

In a sermon entitled “Before it is too late, the Bishop, Egba Diocese of the African Church, Dr Jacob Ayoko said that death was inevitable, hence the need for people to make peace with their maker before reaching the end of their journey in life.

The clergyman encouraged the deceased’s Children to walk in the path of their mother and contribute meaningfully to humanity.

Speaking on the level of poverty in the country, the religious leader urged the public officeholders to concentrate efforts on making life more bearable for the people.

The evening of tributes which featured various musical presentations, prayers for the country, Ogun State, the Church and Family members of the deceased was attended by Former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, national and state lawmakers, members of the State Executive Council, spiritual leaders and traditional rulers as well as representatives of private organizations and captains of Industries among others.

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed sadness over the demise of the late Iyalode of Egbaland, Chief Alaba Lawson.

Chief Obasanjo, who conferred the national honour of Member of the Order of Federal Republic, MFR, on Chief Lawson in 2004 described the late Iyalode of Egbaland and Yorubaland as a very generous personality whose life was worthwhile.

He noted that, the strictness and hardworking attributes of the late industrialist were remarkable. 

In a reaction conveyed through his Special Assistant on Media, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, former President Obasanjo said the late Chief Lawson had contributed immensely to the country’s economic growth and community development.
