Oyo Assembly Passes Security Network Agency Bill into Law

Oyo State House of Assembly has passed the Oyo state security network agency (Amotekun) bill 2020 into law.

The bill was passed into law after passing through the third reading with clause by clause deliberation. 

Radio Nigeria correspondent at the ongoing plenary for the passage of the Oyo state security network agency bill, reports that the lawmakers appeared in traditional attire with a leopard skin pattern material which explained the seriousness of the 9th assembly to give a legal framework to the Western Nigeria Security Network, code-named operation Amotekun. 

Speaker of the House, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin expressed the joy to be part of history on the creation of operation Amotekun corps. 

It has been recalled that about fifteen organizations summited memorandum at a concluded public hearing on the Amotekun corps.

Amotekun: Ogun Assembly to Pass Bill into Law Next Week

Ogun House of Assembly has assured the residents that the Ogun State Security Network Agency, the Amotekun Corps, will be passed into law next week Tuesday. 

The Speaker, Mr Olakunle Oluomo, who stated while briefing the House on the outcome of the Conference of Speakers, said some amendments had been made in the bill to aid its smooth running in the southwest states. 

The Speaker, who added that the final copy of the bill would be adopted by the six southwestern states on Friday, assured that all recommendations made during public hearing on the bill would be looked into before passage. 

Meanwhile, the Speaker has also called on the leadership of the Nigeria Police to train its men to be civil in carrying out their duties. 

He made the call while reacting on the recent killing of Remo Stars footballer, Mr KazeemTiamiyu by operatives of the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squard, FSARS, last week 

Mr Oluomo warned that the personnel should refrain from infringing on peoples rights and admonished them to be human in all their dealings. 

He, however, called on Nigerian youths to dress decently and shun living a flamboyant lifestyle.

Amotekun: There’s no going back – Gov. Akeredolu

The Ondo State Governor, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu says no going back on Southwest Security Network, codenamed “Operation Amotekun”.

Governor Akeredolu stated this at the opening of public hearing on the law to establish the state security network and Amotekun corps organised by the Ondo State House of Assembly.

The governor noted that the public hearing was meant to take stakeholders’ contributions towards a formidable security network in the state and the southwest.

The Speaker, Mr. Bamidele Oleyelogun commended the turnout by stakeholders and urged to make contributions that would assist the lawmakers at reaching a fundamental law that could withstand the test of time.

On his part, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, Mr. Kola Olawoye stated that the enshrinement of the law has reached an advanced stage with the public hearing.

Radio Nigeria correspondent reports that traditional institutions, Afenifere, political groups, the NUJ and other groups submitted memorandums at the hearing.

High-point of the opening was the presentation of a drama sketch depicting the level of insecurity in the country.

Amotekun Bill : OSHA to Accelerate Passage

The Osun House of Assembly says the second reading of the Amotekun Bill will be done after public hearing on the Bill, just as the ‘policy trust’ on the Bill was treated.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Timothy  Owoeye and other lawmakers who spoke on the policy trust of the Bill, all agreed on the need for accelerated hearing and passage of the bill, hinging their submission on the inherent security benefits of the Bill when passed into law.

Earlier, while entertaining Hunters Group of Nigeria, Osun Command, the Speaker said the timing was right for the services of the group and others like them to be part of the Amotekun operation in order to fortify security in the state and region.

He however, warned the group not to abuse or use the position and privilege, when accommodated into the Amotekun programme, to oppress, telling them not to toe the line of a similar social-cultural security group that became oppressive and collapsed afterwards.

Mr. Owoeye called on the hunters to give the Amotekun initiative full support, asking them to be part of the public hearing on the Bill on Monday, as stakeholders in the security sector.

Mr. Amitolu Shittu, who led the group to the Assembly, said the group has about 15,000 screened and registered members in the state and that their visit to the assembly was to show support and solidarity to the House.

Mr. Shittu said his group and its members were ready to work with security agents to secure lives and property of the people in the state, adding that it would be a privilege to be part of the Amotekun programme.

We Have Transmitted “Amotekun” Bill to OYHA – Oyo Govt

Oyo state government has approved a draft bill seeking to create a legal framework for the establishment of the Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed “Amotekun”.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Oyelowo Oyewo who disclosed this while briefing newsmen after an executive council meeting, said the bill had been transmitted to the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, for necessary action.

Professor Oyewo explained that following a meeting of the Attorney Generals from the South-West in collaboration with the DAWN commission, a framework had been created with individual states remodeling the bill to conform to their own peculiarities.

Also, Commissioner for Education, Mr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye explained that suspended management of Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki has been sacked due to irregularities in their appointments.

He added that the school’s account would be audited and anyone found wanting would be made to face the wrath of the law.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bashir Bello also seized the opportunity to disclose that no reported cases of Lassa fever or Coronavirus has been recorded in the state due to the proactive actions of the state government at preventing the diseases.

Insecurity: Southwest Governors Launch “Amotekun”

Over one hundred vehicles to complement federal government efforts in tackling insecurity in South-West states of Nigeria under the “Amotekun” Scheme have been launched.

Speaking at the launch of vehicles tagged “Amotekun”, at the Governor’s Office, Ibadan, governors of the southwestern states in separate speeches said the security outfit was not to compete with Nigeria Police Force but to provide security for people of the region.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF and the governor of Ekiti state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi said the constitutional provision to protect lives and property of the citizenry informed the decisions to employ the security outfit.

Ondo state governor who is also the chairman of South-West Governors, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu said “Amotekun” was not a regional police as being insinuated in some quarters, maintaining that the outfit would not be used for political gains.

His counterpart from Osun state, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola who represented by the deputy governor, Mr. Benedict Alabi while emphasising that the initiative would have positive impact on the region urged the people to give necessary support to the security outfit.

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi lauded the governors for shunning political differences by coming up with such initiative which he said would be beneficial to the entire South West region and Nigeria at large.

Earlier, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state, had noted that investment opportunities and growing Internally Generated Revenue could not thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity, hence the introduction of the “Amotekun” initiative to further enhance security in the region. 

Local security personnel Agbekoyas, hunters, vigilante groups, members of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, community leaders and traditional rulers were part of the event.

Radio Nigeria’s Iyabo Adebisi reports that the red vehicles had the inscription of South Western Security Outfit and a picture of a leopard.
