The President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and other newly elected leaders have been urged not to deviate from their campaign promises when inaugurated into office.

An Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Hashim Atere gave the admonition while delivering the 2023 fifth Shina Peller-sponsored Ramadan Lecture/Iftar held at Dapọ Aderọgba hall, NUJ Secretariat, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

Sheikh Atere, who spoke on the theme: ‘Inescapable Reward of Kept and Un-kept Promises in Public Offices’, explained that politicians could assume any character to win the mind of electorates and thereafter abandon them after they assume office.

The Cleric noted that the mandate given to them represented the lives, hope and voices of the people hence, the elected leaders must justify the confidence reposed on them through constant engagement and delivery of dividends of democracy

On his part, the sponsor of the programme, the Ayedero of Yorubaland and Member of the House of Representatives for Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency of Oyo State, Chief Shina Peller, said keeping promises and terms of the agreement made him not to seek a return to the green chamber for the second time in the just concluded general election.

Earlier, in an address Chairman, NUJ, Oyo State Council, Mr. Demola Babalola called on the elected leaders to see every promise made during the 2023 electioneering as a debt which must be paid.

Highpoint of the event was the breaking of the fast with Muslim journalists, dignitaries and guests in attendance.

Tinubu, in a statement signed by his media aide, Mr Tunde Rahman, described Shettima as a bold, courageous, selfless, brilliant, and committed leader who led his people through the most difficult and challenging period as Governor of Borno State, when the state was under Boko Haram siege.

The APC standard bearer noted that Shettima did not allow the menace of Boko Haram terrorism to overwhelm him as he had shown exemplary leadership.

He said, “I heartily congratulate my brother and worthy partner, Senator Kashim Shettima, on attaining 56 in good health. I am excited about his energy, dynamism, and readiness to serve our country at the centre as Vice President.

Senate President Lawan, in a statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Ola Awoniyi, said: “…Senator Shettima is a man of many parts and bundle of energy, as he has demonstrated in his remarkably productive public life.

“His record of service as a scholar, banker, two-term governor of Borno State and currently as a distinguished senator representing Borno Central, is exemplary.

“The APC Northeast Caucus is proud to showcase him as our ambassador and to assure Nigerians that he will do the party and the nation proud as the next Vice President of Nigeria, by the Grace of God.”

Similarly, Speaker, House of Reps, Gbajabiamila described Shettima as a determined, upright, courageous and dogged politician, whose words are his bond.

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday began the search for their running mates.

The spokesman for the Tinubu Campaign Organisation, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu , in an interview with newsmen, said the APC presidential candidate would meet the APC governors whom he said would pick the former Lagos State governor’s running mate.

It was also gathered that Tinubu would meet party leaders, including the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, before the end of the week.

As Tinubu began the search for his running mate, Atiku on Wednesday held a closed-door meeting with the PDP governors in Abuja with a view to picking the party’s vice-presidential candidate.

At the APC presidential primary, which started on Tuesday and was rounded off on Wednesday, Tinubu garnered 1,271 votes to clinch the party’s presidential ticket.

The Chairman of the Convention Election Management Committee, Governor Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State, at the Eagle Square,  Abuja, announced that a former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, got 316 votes; the Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, 235 votes; a former Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, one vote; Senator Rochas Okorocha and Pastor Tunde Bakare got zero votes each.

On Monday, Northern Governors had insisted on a power shift to the South despite the National Chairman’s endorsement of the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, from the North-East, as the party’s consensus candidate.

Tinubu,  in his acceptance speech after his victory, said those who did not support him should not be afraid.

He further said, “Our teeming youth population is our nation’s greatest asset. We will create jobs for our youth from the Zamfara and Osun gold deposits to the vast agricultural lands across the country. We will create new opportunities in the Fintech sector, the creative and entertainment industries, digital skills and other areas.”

But there were strong indications on Wednesday that both Tinubu and Atiku had started searching for their running mates ahead of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s June 17 deadline for parties to submit their candidates’ lists.

Onanuga in an interview with newsmen stated that Tinubu already had an arrangement with the APC governors that if he emerged the candidate of the party, the governors would decide the person to pick.

According to him, Tinubu prefers a collective responsibility than doing it on his own.

“The party leaders will look at the chances and decide how they will balance a Muslim from the South, maybe with somebody that comes from North- East, North-Central or from North-West. That is how it is done. I cannot circumvent the party.

Asked when Tinubu might likely meet with the governors, Onanuga stressed that though a date had not been chosen, it would not take long.

“Already, he has a cordial relationship with virtually all of them. You will also have to understand that he has just picked the presidential ticket. I am also sure that this issue of picking the right candidate for VP will be in the minds of the party leadership and the APC governors too.

“At this moment, we just want to pause and take a rest from the stress of the just-concluded campaign.”

Ahead of the 2023 presidential race, the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, former governor of Lagos State and All Progressives Congress, APC presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed 31-year-old Borno youth, Comrade Muhammad Mahmud as his National Media Coordinator.

Mahmud while addressing Journalists in Maiduguri, solicited support from all and sundry to ensure the long-awaited ambition of the Jagaban is collectively actualized in order to consolidate on President Muhammadu Buhari’s unprecedented transformation and development.

Comrade Mahmud, a very strong media practitioner said, his appointment did not come to him as a surprise, because of Tinubu’s style of a leadership devoid of tribal or ethnic background.

“I received with joy my appointment as the National Coordinator, Tinubu Media Support Group.

“Without doubt, this is a daunting assignment taking into account that our principal is a game-changer of Nigerian politics. He is as well a man of many flanks.

“Therefore, our approach shall be very tasking, as we aren’t oblivious of the fact that with the support of well-meaning Nigerians and prayers, we will wither the storm insha’Allah (By God Grace).

“Our efforts shall be to promote his philosophy of politics of maturity, which is, without holding grudge or bitterness against anyone, based on our principles for over the years.

“Considering the fact that the assignment revolves around 2023 General Elections vis-à-vis our principal (Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu), the Jagaban of Borgu Kingdom, it is then appropriate to limit the scope of the assignment to mass political mobilization through the media (electronic, print and social media), content development relating to media for our principal, and of course strategic plan towards a successful campaign.

“For indeed our ultimate goal is to have a stable transition of power come 2023, so that, we can consolidate on the unprecedented achievements hitherto put in place by the transparent and zero tolerance to corruption laid down by President Muhammadu Buhari under the APC- led government.

“I am nevertheless eternally most grateful to all those who believed in our ability especially the Conventional Media, and by extension social media influencers, friends from far and near and most especially our leaders who had worked round the clock in ensuring that we are so appointed to this prestigious position.

“Neither shall we let you down nor disappoint you by God’s grace. For your mandate we shall stand for JAGABAN to succeed for bettering the lives of Nigerians and those in diaspora”. Mahmud said.

National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on Monday declared that he had informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his presidential ambition.

Asiwaju Tinubu disclosed this while addressing State House Correspondents after a closed-door meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The APC stalwart, however, said he was yet to publicly disclose his ambition as he was still in consultations with various interests across the country.

Describing his ambition to be President, the party stalwart said it is a lifelong dream.

When asked if he had informed Buhari of his ambition, the former Lagos Governor said: “I can answer that with a categorical yes. I’ve informed the President of my intention but I’ve not informed Nigerians yet.
I’m still consulting and I have no problem consulting and I’ve not set a parameter of limitation to the extent of how many people will I consult.

“You will soon hear all you want to hear, it’s a categorical declaration. You’ve gotten that truth from me that I’ve informed Mr. President of my ambition and you don’t expect more answers than that.”

Asked how Buhari responded, he said: “He’s a democrat, he didn’t ask me to stop. He didn’t ask me not to attempt and pursue my ambition. It’s a lifelong ambition.
“So, why will I expect him to say more than that? Why do you? You are running a democratic dispensation and you must adopt the principles and virtues of democracy.”

Tinubu avoided being drawn into discussing the rumoured presidential interests of other aspirants on the platform of the party, including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, saying he would not discuss individuals but himself and his capacity for the office he aspires to.

On this day, I join with all Nigerians in commemorating Democracy Day. The book of the life of this nation has many chapters already written and many more yet to be written.

One of the most profound and inspiring accounts that shall be written of our nation’s history will be the chapter on how we moved from the darkness of authoritarian military suppression into the light of democracy and the establishment of popular government based on the sovereign will of the people.

On this memorable day, we mark, with respect, and honor the sacrifices that have allowed democracy to come to pass. We also celebrate in anticipation of a future in which our democratic institutions, concepts and practices take firmer root; transforming this society from what it is to what it can be.

The pages of our national book inexorably turn. We have seen and experienced much. Victory and setback have entered and exited. The departure of friend and foe we have witnessed. The song of peace and unity we have sung as one national family while others have pounded the drums of war and hate. Laughter and sorrow, we have known.

Through it all, our gaze has remained fixed as if it were focused on a star in the firmament. Our road has remained certain for it is the only road we can reasonably tread. We have moved toward a better Nigeria and a greater democracy.

This path has not been without peril. There are many who care not for the journey we take. They embark on a different trek for they hold to a different concept of governance and of the relationship of government to the people.

They do not believe in a nation where every person therein has substantive rights, freedoms and liberties as God intended for all of his human creations regardless of place of birth, ethnic origin, social station or religious creed. These people hate democracy and despise you for choosing democracy over them and their oppressive ways.

They are violent and cold-hearted. They love nothing, save the destruction of the happiness and peace of others. They will not go away quietly or in consideration of the compelling logic of democratic governance.

Instead, they set us up in hopes of laying waste to the good society we seek to build. They levy terror against us in vain hope that their violent impositions might cause us to lose our way. They raze villages, destroy homes assault and kill innocent people. They even attack important symbols of a just society including religious institutions, schools of learning and INEC offices as if they can snuff out, through violence, mankind’s will to worship God, seek knowledge or engage in participatory governance.

However, with all that they do, they will not succeed. In trying to pluck a democratic and just society from our hands they are as mistaken as they are evil.

Our democracy was not here established to be destroyed by the terrible likes of people such as these. Those who sacrificed their lives for democracy did not give of themselves so that we would be turned back by terrorists or by those who seek to tear the nation asunder just so they might imperially rule over some small part of it.

Despite the troubles we face, and those troubles are serious, we must stand up for democracy lest we shall find ourselves falling to oblivion. Democratic good governance offers the only reasonable solution to the challenges confronting Nigeria.

Thus, we must stand for democracy today. We must stand for it even more tomorrow. Ask this question 10, 20, 100 years from now, the answer must remain the same: the people of Nigeria stand for democracy and stand against that which would chase democracy from our land.

Thus, we stand against those who traffic in insurrection and violence. We stand against those whose commerce is bigotry and hatred. We contend against those who would render the people ignorant and poor.

We stand for a better way. We celebrate Democracy Day not only because we have come far but to help give us the social fuel and encouragement to continue onward because we have farther to go and even greater things to achieve as one nation and one people.

On this day, let us remember MKO Abiola whose victory in the June 12th 1993 presidential election was stolen from him. Yet he remained steadfast and surrendered his own life so that we all might enjoy the democratic victory that was taken from him. Without his historic effort and sacrifice, this day would not be democracy day. It would be a downcast and disappointing one. Let us also remember all others who also sacrificed so much to bring democracy to this land.

We best honor these people not by reciting their names but by injecting the spirit and hope of democracy into our words and deeds. In becoming better democrats, we also become better at being Nigerians.

I wish all of you a meaningful and happy Democracy Day.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

June 11, 2021.

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has called for peace among all ethnic, tribal and religious groups in Nigeria.

Tinubu made the call on Friday, during the Eighth-Day Fidau Prayer for the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the first Civilian Governor of Lagos State.

He said that the country was facing a crisis but all needed to live in harmony and give peace a chance.

”Nigeria is currently facing a crisis; a crisis of insurgency, banditry in all aspects of security, but God Almighty that made this country as one of the largest and most resourceful country will protect us.

”I appeal, in his memory today, for us not to turn whatever challenges we are facing right now into ethnic, tribal and religion crises.

”If there is a crisis, where do we go? We will submerge the entire West Africa, there will be no enough space to accommodate us.

”Those who have seen the effect of war, the effect of tribal conflict, of religion conflict, will never want it for Nigeria.

“We pray to God to strengthen our mind, guide our faith, put peace and bring peace unto this land, may Allah bless all of us,” Tinubu said.

He said that the clerics were very critical in the present situation, urging them for their prayers, commitment, fasting, all the sermons geared toward peace and stability in the country.

According to him, the death of the first civilian governor, Jakande is not just a loss to the family, but Lagos in general.

Tinubu said that Lagos and Nigeria at large were lucky to have a man like Alhaji Lateef Jakande, drawing from his wealth of knowledge.

”Today, he is no more but he is still existing to the eternity, we pray for Lagos State, we pray for Nigeria to give us more people, more leaders that are prudent, honest, that give priority to the world in the future,” he said.

One major feature of the present democratic system in Nigeria is the approval of a generous pension package for former governors and their deputies.

Apart from working their way up, while still in office to become senators or ministers, these governors either persuade or compel their state Houses of Assembly to come up with legislations that make them enjoy pension for life.

For instance, in Lagos State which was the first to implement the law signed by former Governor Bola Tinubu in 2007, the legislation provides a lot of comfort and convenience for their ex-governors and their deputies.

A breakdown of the legislation shows that former governors in the state are entitled to a house each in preferred locations in Lagos and Abuja.

The law provides for six new cars every three years, one hundred percent of the basic salary of the incumbent governor, and free healthcare for the beneficiary and his family members.

Former governors in Lagos State are also entitled to furniture allowance, three hundred percent of annual basic salary, house maintenance allowance, ten percent of annual basic salary utility allowance, twenty percent of annual basic salary, car maintenance allowance and thirty percent of the annual basic salary.

There is also an entertainment allowance which is ten percent of the annual basic salary and a personal assistant who will earn twenty-five percent of the governor’s annual basic salary.

But in a surprise move, Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced his intention to set in motion necessary machinery for the repeal of the ex-governors’ pension law.

Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that amid rising poverty, youth unemployment, inability of most states to pay the thirty thousand naira minimum wage, poor roads infrastructure, underdevelopment of rural areas, it would not speak well to ask fellow citizens to brace up for harsh economic realities, and yet allow a segment of the society live in affluence.

Lagos State is not alone in this gesture though, Zamfara and Imo States have repealed the governors’ pension package.

The Pension Reform Act of 2004 changed the Nigerian Pension System from defined benefits to defined contributions which means that private and public sector workers can only be entitled to a pension from the funds they contributed while in active pensionable work.

Since the salaries of the governors and their deputies are not subject to pension deductions, their pension is a different ball game, which can only be fixed by the revenue mobilization, allocation and fiscal commission but rather than have that, the states use taxpayers’ money to pay the illegal pension.

No doubt, the repeal will reduce the cost of governance and is expected to bring development to the various states.

With this, these governors have sent a message that those in public service can also make sacrifice.

Similar principle of self-restraint should also guide those in the private sector who have the powers, and use it to set huge benefits for themselves as such acts send the message to those below them to act recklessly.

Public service should be for those who have distinguished themselves in other endeavours, or for those who are capable of engaging in other works after a stint in public service.

It is pertinent that other state Houses of Assembly do the needful by abrogating this law once and for all, as what the country requires now are laws that will fast-track the overall development of the nation.
