The defendant was charged with culpable homicide contrary to section 221 of the Penal Code which is punishable with death.

The case with charge number, CR/199/2022, was filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on May 20, 2022, by the Head, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Yewande Gbola-Awopetun.

The 42-year-old musician died after spending days at an undisclosed hospital in Abuja.

The basis of marriage according to the holy books is love between man and woman, for companionship, procreation, and family integration among others.

Traditional, religious or court marriages have laid down rules that guide and instruct couples about the rights and privileges as directed by the holy books, traditions, customs and law of the land.

In some marriages, the rules or laws guiding the institution have often been compromised leading to an untimely death for some women and men, with the spate of domestic violence increasing.

Women, who are mostly victims of domestic violence, have refused  to also speak up because of the ugly culture of silence in toxic marriages and the doctrines against divorce in religious circles as well as procedures involved in divorce cases

This captures the most recent case of a popular gospel artiste, Mrs Osinachi Nwachukwu, who died after an alleged case of domestic violence she suffered at the hands of her husband.

One way out of this is that women should speak up against gender-based violence in their marriages to save them from the untimely death or life-threatening injuries.

Covering up toxic marriages will not stop domestic violence but it will further encourage the ugly trend, making the children in such marriages mentally unstable and depressed.

It is high time for the media, civil society organizations to swing into action by educating women on their rights and privileges as stated in the Marriage Act and seeking help rather than the mentality of enduring an abusive relationship

Churches, mosques and the traditional institution should re-strategize towards preaching mental, emotional and physical safety of men and women in marriages rather than hammering against divorce even where life is being threatened.

On its part, the government should make marital laws more effective to make couples aware of the penalty and its implications when either partner is abused or rights are violated.

Parenting Tips

By Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu (Wife of Ondo State Governor)

Your 3-year-old son gets angry whenever you give him a food he doesn’t want and throws it on you, you laugh and say “😃😃 children ehh”.

Baby boy will lift his hands and slap you when he wants you to drop him… All you’d say is “you’re beating mummy😃“.

No other child in that area messes with him… And you’re calling him “A no- nonsense boy”.

He picks up things from the ground and hits people whenever he’s stopped from doing something… You smile and call him “action boy😃🤾🏿‍♂️🤸🏽‍♂️

You expose him to all manner of violence and say “He’s a man, man suppose get mind”.

Few years down the line the teenage boy bullies his sisters, commands them around, shares slaps as souvenirs to anyone that dares to challenge him. You call him “man of the house”😃.

He grew up having his way all through.

Now he’s a full grown man in the society.

And it’s not funny anymore.

Abusive husbands didn’t fall from the sky, someone raised a boy wrongly.

It’s easier to train a son than to correct a husband.

We could address a lot from the root.

Religion

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Dr Alfred Adewale says, “No cleric should ever support or encourage any woman or even a man to continue to stay in an abusive relationship or marriage. It will be tantamount to connivance for any clergyman to support domestic violence.”

Dr Adewale stated this while reacting to the matrimonial imbroglio that led death of a Gospel music artiste in Abuja, saying that, “Though the bible admonishes the woman to be submissive to her husband (Ephesians 5:22-33), it’s not a license for the man to become a terror.”

Speaking through his Director of Social of Communications, Reverend Father Anthony Godonu, the Archbishop emphasized that:

“I believe strongly that any woman who feels her life is truly and sincerely threatened by her spouse should get out of such marriage immediately. The Catholic Church in such instance grants express separation until otherwise.

Due to the issue of wife battering rampaging the country, with the recent case of a Nigerian gospel Singer, Osinachi Nwachuckwu who was allegedly beaten to death by her husband, Peter Nwanchukwu, last week Friday, a Nigerian lady, Ada has gone on social media, to call off her wedding coming up in three days time.

She said and I quote:

I never wanted to bring this here but I have to, I am a type of person who likes to keep my relationship away from social media but this is for clarification purposes.

This was my secondary school classmate who I thought I knew to an extent. On December 28, 2020 he did the 1st and 2nd stage in my family marriage list which bride price happened to be on the 2nd stage which he paid. After he paid my bride price he started maltreating me.

2021 was hell for me that at some point I left home, after everything we settled around November 2021 which he promised he will never beat me again. But still nothing CHANGED.

This is my reason why I am CALLING OFF the Traditional Marriage (Igba Ngwu) and White Wedding ceremony between me and DAVID OKIKE OFF. (Beating me was not part of the agreement in our Marriage)

This Saturday should have been my traditional and white wedding ceremony day…. I supposed to be happy but I am not.

For couple of months now I have been going through a lot.

I have been in a TOXIC RELATIONSHIP for OVER a YEAR now.. I am aware that this may be a shock to many people, especially people from my Home Town. My supposed husband HIT and ABUSE me in any slightest provocation, just small misunderstanding without minding what condition I am into.

Because I have chosen ME and I will not live my entire life facing DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. My supposed husband is full of RAGE, BEATING me with his Belt, Stick, Broom is his DAILY ROUTINE, Many a times he had lifted his hammer 🔨 on me and this Monday last week just because of little misunderstanding he beat me mercilessly and on the process of it he rushed into his mother’s kitchen for a cutlass, when I noticed he’s going for a weapon I locked the door behind him which he forcefully opened, both his mother and Sisters and some neighbors were begging him not to cut me with the cutlass … With all these things and more I am fed up.

I AM CALLING OFF THE WEDDING AND TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE (IGBA NGWU) BETWEEN ME AND DAVID OKIKE that supposed to hold on this Saturday 16th, April 2022.

Please to my family and friends I am so sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you 🙏🏿

But I will not end up with a man who always promise that if I didn’t kill him, that he will kill me.

I am still suffering from unstoppable headache I sustained from the head injury he gave me 3 weeks ago.

The “bride price paid” will be Returned in due time.

Please Respect my choices. Thanks and God bless you all.
