Edo State Government says efforts are still ongoing to rescue the remaining victims of Saturday’s attack at a train station in the Igueben Local Government Area of the state.

The State Commissioner for Communications and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare made this known while giving an update of the attack on Wednesday.

According to him, 20 persons were kidnapped and not 31, adding that while seven persons have been rescued, 13 persons remain in the den of their abductors.

He said, “From intelligence, we have discovered that the kidnappers actually made away with 13 hostages, not 31 as previously thought. This is from intelligence made available to us now.

“They must have taken 20, seven were rescued and the balance is 13 with them. The operation is still ongoing and we are confident that very soon, the ordeal of these innocent citizens will come to an end.”

Nehikhare, however, said Governor Godwin Obaseki administration will do all it can to protect lives and assets in the state and as well as support security agencies in the safe returns of those kidnapped at the train station.

Edo’s Gov. Godwin Obaseki on Friday in Benin blamed increasing rate of drug abuse in the state on the lingering Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) strike.

Reviewing the state’s security situation for the months of February, March and April, Gov. Obaseki said Edo recorded 19 drug abuse cases in February, 34 cases in March and 23 cases in April.

“Drug abuse is now number two issue of concern in our state.

“Our analysis shows that there is high rate of consumption of drugs in the last few months.

“This is not unconnected with the ASUU strike which has kept many students at home and idle,’’ the governor said.

The review came after a joint security meeting between the state government and representatives of various security agencies in the state.

“I use the opportunity of this meeting to appeal to ASUU and the Federal Government to do all they can to end this strike as soon as possible.

“This is in the interest of the children so that we do not keep them at home and destroying their lives.

Security

The Edo State Government has extolled citizens of the state for the growing synergy with security agencies to ensure that the state remains unsafe for criminals.

Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Hon. Adaze Emwanta, who gave the commendation, urged more Edo youths to key into the community-driven security architecture of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration.

Emwanta said: “Every crime is local and this explains why Governor Obaseki has designed the state’s security architecture with community participation and inter-agency collaboration as the focus.

“For the first time in the history of our dear state, we have seen robust collaborations among the police, the military, vigilante groups, local hunters, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), members of the Public Works Volunteers scheme (PUWOV), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), community groups and individuals.

“Our youths in Uromi who rose to the occasion on the day of the robbery incident to block the escape route of the criminals deserve our praise for the rare act of courage they displayed.

“The robbers we learnt had to abandon some of the stolen money, vehicles and other items and fled the town on motorcycles.”

The commissioner added: “As a government, we are closing the gap between our people and government policies through a series of communication activities and we are seeing the result as demonstrated by our people in Uromi and elsewhere who liaise with the government and security agencies daily to keep our communities safe.

“One of the greatest legacies the Obaseki administration will leave behind is community ownership of the projects, policies and programmes that the governor and his team are delivering daily to Edo people and residents.
“We promised people-centric and community-driven governance and we are delivering exactly what we promised.”

As the police and other security agencies intensify search for the robbers, Mr. Phillip Ogbadu, the Edo State Commissioner of Police told journalists on Friday that about N37 million carted away by the armed robbers and five cars suspected to have been used by them were recovered at a bush where they were abandoned.

A Political Scientist, Mr Dolapo Ogunsola has described the crises rocking the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State as a bad omen for the party ahead of the governorship election.

He stated this while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the recent Appeal Court Judgment upholding the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman of the party.

Mr Ogunsola expressed the worry that the suspension of Mr Oshiomhole and the possible defection of the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki to another party would be a big minus to the APC in the state.

While nothing that the sitting governor was an asset to any political party, Mr Ogunsola hinted that other parties would be eager to accept Obaseki to their parties.

The political scientist maintained that the body language of Oshiomhole was signaling autocracy and may as well confer sympathy votes on Obaseki.

He noted that the suspension of Oshiomhole would deepen the crisis of the party in the state.

It would be recalled that the Appeal Court on Tuesday 16th of June, 2020, upheld the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole just hours after the state governor formally announced his resignation from the party.

News Analysis

A political scientist, Mr Joshua Adedeji has described the disqualification of Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki by APC gubernatorial screening committee as a potential danger for the party.

Mr Adedeji believed that the decision of the screening committee was influenced by powerful individuals in the party, saying if such development was not carefully handled, the ruling party would blame itself.

‘’I believe there is no justification for the decision of the screening committee, if not for individual interest because I believe this is not in the party’s interest.

When you have god father and godson relationship and the son refuses to be loyal, the reverse is always the case.

Adams Oshiomole is hell bent in ensuring that obaseki did not get the ticket. But I don’t think this is the best for APC at all.

I knew from outset that Obaseki will never get the ticket.

I strongly believe Obaseki will move to another party and this will make the election 50/50 tough and 50/50 easy for APC and Obaseki.

It is going to be a battle of power of incumbency against Federal ‘might’ he said

Adedeji hinted that with the development, Governor Obaseki could defect to another party and thus provide a very strong opposition for the governorship election.

The screening committee had disclosed that Governor Obaseki was disqualified on the grounds that he did not submit some results as well as discrepancy on his name on his NYSC certificate.
