The management of Obafemi Awolowo University,OAU,Ile -Ife has asked students of the institution to proceed on a two week mid simester break.

The development is coming after series of protests by some Indigenes of Ile-Ife over the emergence of Professor Adebayo Bamire as the Vice Chancellor of the Institution.

Protesters had besieged the institution carrying charms and fetish objects to register their grievance over the new VC.

As a result, students were prevented from entering the Campus.

But the action attracted widespread criticism and condemnation by people from various walks of life including the Ooni Of Ile – Ife, Oba Enitan ogunwusi and Nobel Laureate,Professor Wole Soyinka.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the decision for students to go on break was reached at a management meeting of the School held on Saturday.

A statement by the registrar, Mrs.M.I Omosule indicates that the break would take effect from Monday,28th March,2022.

It would be recalled that the Academic Staff Union Of Universities,ASUU had been on strike since February 14,2022.

After a month,it extended the strike for another two months for government to yield to it’s age long demands.

Leadership of ASUU in OAU had equally declared an indefinite strike over unpaid academic earned allowance but members of a parallel academic union on the campus,the Congress of University Academics,CONUA had refused to join the industrial action and and had been teaching the students.

The announcement of  the new Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Professor Adebayo Bamire, sparked protest as some people blocked the entrance of the University in disagreement to the development.

The governing council of the University, led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of council, Owelle Udoji, had on Thursday, announced Professor Adebayo Bamire as the new Vice-Chancellor to take over from Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede on 7th June, 2022.

Immediately the new Vice-Chancellor was announced, some people believed to be indigenes of Ile-Ife, barricaded the University entrance and prevented vehicular movement for almost an hour.

They insisted that an indigene of Ile-Ife must succeed Ogunbodede if peace would reign in the university.
The protesters threatened to shut down the University on Friday, warning people not to enter the campus.

A Professor of Agricultural Economics in the Faculty of Agriculture Adebayo Bamire has been announced as the Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU), Ile-Ife. 

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Owelle Udoji announced the appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor during a press conference held at the school ICT auditorium.

 Chief Udoji said the new VC of the institution will assume office by June 7th, 2022 following the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent, Professor Eyitope Ogunmodede.

 He explained that Council, at its meeting held on 7th December 2021 flagged off the processes for the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor.

He said In line with the approval of the Council, the vacancy was widely advertised in compliance with relevant Statutes and Acts guiding appointment to the position.

“At a Special Meeting of 14th February 2022, the Council perused the Curriculum Vitae of all the twenty applicants who indicated an interest in the position. At the end of the exercise, sixteen of them were shortlisted, having met the advertised criteria.

“The interaction with the candidates began on Monday, 14th March 2022 and ended on Wednesday, 16th March 2022.

All the sixteen candidates appeared before the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board, with fifteen of them present physically and one, at his request, virtually.

The Selection Board painstakingly examined the Curriculum Vitae and interacted with each candidate, and scored them accordingly to stipulated criteria. 
“The three highest-scoring candidates were presented to the Council for further consideration as provided by the law. The entire exercise of the Joint Selection Board was witnessed by the representatives of the Federal Character Commission who have confirmed the exercise as fair and transparent and carried out in full compliance with the provisions of the Federal Character Commission Act.

“In line with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act as amended, the report of the Selection Board was considered by the Council which, after a careful and dispassionate review of the report, decided to appoint Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, Professor of Agricultural Economics from the Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, as the Vice-Chancellor of the University with effect from June 7, 2022.

The decision of the Council shall be communicated to the Visitor to the University, His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari through the Hon. Minister of Education.”

Pathologists invited to conduct an autopsy on the remains of Timothy Adegoke, a Master’s student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, whose dead body was exhumed some days after he was declared missing, arrived at Osun State University Teaching Hospital UNIOSUNTH, Osogbo around 2 pm, on Monday.

Family members of the deceased, counsels and journalists had arrived at the hospital by 11 am when the autopsy was slated, to monitor the event.

The corpse was taken out of the hospital’s mortuary department for X-ray and later returned for other examinations.

Lead counsel to the family of late Timothy Adegoke, Mr. Naheem Adekilekun, said the pathologist of the family of the deceased was there to represent them.

The Investigative Police Officer, IPO, and other pertinent parties were allowed into the mortuary while journalists and other members stood outside.

Meanwhile, speaking with newsmen on behalf of the family, Mr. Adekilekun challenged the police over the alleged audio of one of the suspects and the owner of Hilton Hotel and Resorts, Dr. Rahmon Adedoyin.

He expressed concern over the audio of the suspect who was said to be in police detention, pleading his innocence in the audio.

The counsel who said the action of Osun Police command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, who told members of the public that there was nothing to show any form of mutilation on the body of the deceased when it was exhumed from the shallow grave, was contrary to what witnesses who were at the site of the exhumation had to say.

He called on the police to give an explanation on the reported “preferential and VIP treatment” being accorded the owner of the hotel who they claimed to be in their detention.

As of the time of filing this report, the outcome of the autopsy is yet to be out.

Six people have been arrested by the Osun State Police Command in connection with the death of a master’s degree student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Mr. Timothy Adegoke. 

A statement by the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola says that the command is working assiduously to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Adegoke.

Mrs. Opalola states that a case of a missing person was reported on 7th November 2021 at about 4:30 PM at Edun Abon Police Station and later transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID. 

The statement hints that policemen swung into action and arrested six suspects in connection with the case while the investigation is ongoing.

It adds that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olawale Olokode appeals to the family, students and management of the university to remain calm and be rest assured that the police will do all within its constitutional responsibility to unravel the mystery behind Adegoke’s death.

The master’s degree student came from Abuja to sit for his examination at the OAU Distance Learning Centre, Moro, Osun State.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has rewarded Miss Joy Adesina, who emerged the best graduating student from the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, with a house, a sum of five million naira and a scholarship for further studies.

Governor Abiodun, who made this known at the reception organized in honour of Miss Adesina, an indigene of Ogun State, noted that the medical scholarship would be for her residency at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

The governor reiterated that his administration would continue to recognize and honour exceptional indigenes of Ogun State, who through a dint of hard work attained academic excellence and are found worthy both in character and innovation.

He advised the awardee to put her intellectual prowess into research and scholarship and expressed optimism that Miss Adesina might be Africa’s first Nobel Laureate in Medicine.

While calling on the private sector to collaborate with the state government through its Public-Private Partnership, PPP, programme to reposition education in the state, the governor promised that his administration would continue to appreciate and reward positive enterprises and achievements by sons and daughters of the state, especially the youths. 

Responding, the honouree appreciated the gestures extended to her by the state and thanked her parents for their love and support to achieve the feat at the medical school with a promise to make good use of the opportunity.

Residents of Ede Road and its adjourning areas of Ile-Ife in Osun State are now heaving a sigh of relief as the federal government hands over the channelization of the Agbara Canal project to the people, following its completion.

The project was handed over to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha at a ceremony in Ile-Ife from where Radio Nigeria’s correspondent, Adenitan Akinola files in the story.

A 52-year-old mother, Mrs Patience Ayube, her son, 23-year-old, Josiah Ayube and two others have been dragged before an Osun State Magistrate court sitting in Ile-Ife for alleged theft of a motorcycle.

The police prosecutor, Mr Abdullahi Emmanuel stated that the mother and her son with 22-year-old, Oluwaseun Joseph and 20-year-old, Friday Emmanuel conspired among themselves to commit the offence.

Mr Emmanuel disclosed that they stole one Honda Motorcycle valued the sum of 285,000 naira, property of one Emmanuel Akpan at Texaco Area, in Ile-Ife.

However, they pleaded not guilty to the charges pressed against them by the police and their counsel, Mr Olalekan Babatunde, pleaded for the bail of the defendants in the most liberal term.

The presiding magistrate, A.I. Oyebadejo granted the bail of the defendants in the sum of 50,000 naira with one surety each in like sum and adjourned the case till June 30, for a definite hearing.

There is palpable tension in Ile-Ife and Modakeke area as two people were reportedly killed in the Alapata area within the two communities. 

Radio Nigeria gathered that the two diseased killed were resident of Modakeke. 

However, youths from the Modakeke community alleged that they were killed by Ile-Ife people, a development which sparked apprehension and tension in the two communities. 

A resident of Ile-Ife who pleaded anonymity told newsmen that following the discovery of the corpses, there had been tension in Ile-Ife because Modakeke youths had been moving around angrily. 

When our correspondent contacted the spokesperson of Modakeke Progressive Union, Venerable Debo Babalola, he confirmed the incident, but noted that details of the incident were unknown to him. 

Similarly, the spokesperson of Osun State Police Command, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola confirmed the incident but disclosed that the police was working to unravel the mystery.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi has unveiled an indigenous drug for the cure and prevention of viral infections. 

The drug named, Verozil which is available in capsules, blisters packs, and liquid was certified by the body regulating sales and use of drugs in Nigeria, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). 

Speaking during the launch at the Banquet Hall of Ooni’s Palace, Ile-Ife, Oba Ogunwusi said, it was a great day and privilege to unveil indigenous medicines noting that its potency had been tested and confirmed by government regulatory bodies.  

The monarch hinted that the herbal medications had been administered on lots of COVID-19 patients to boost their immune system including political leaders, noting that as the world celebrates the COVID-19 vaccine, Nigeria people are also unveiling indigenous solutions.

Earlier, in the address of a prominent herbal medicine practitioner, Chief Akintunde Ayeni, who worked in conjunction with the palace on the medications revealed that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi phoned him during the first wave of COVID-19 and inquired from him what he was doing in respect of the deadly virus.

He said Oba Adeyeye sent him some recipes that they could use in making indigenous supplement to fight COVID-19 which he studied and gave birth to what was being launched. 

Also, the Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to the President on Job Creation and Youth Employment in the Office of the Vice President of Nigeria, Mr Afolabi Imoukhuede, in his goodwill messages commended Oba Adeyeye for his commitment to local contents and passion for National development.

A physiotherapist, Professor Rufus Adedoyin wants Nigerians to explore physical therapy for any form of ailment to promote good health.

He made the call in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Ilesa.

Professor Adedoyin who is also the Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical
Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife advocates non-drug
treatment to prevent the side effects of most drugs.

The physiotherapist who observed that heart disease was the major cause
of death nowadays, also advised Nigerians to avoid sedentary lifestyle, too much sugar and fat to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Professor Adedoyin called on the media to increase awareness on non-drug treatment and physical exercise for healthy living.

The Triangular Group of Pensioners says, there is no reason for any group or groups of pensioners to embark on any form of protest against Osun State Government.

The group hinges their resolve on the commitment of the Gboyega Oyetola’s administration prompt payment of all pension and salaries since his assumption of office in 2018.

Chairman of the group, Mr Rotimi Adelugba was speaking at a press conference organised to address issues of pension and gratuity in the state.

Mr Adelugba said the group was constantly negotiating with government on issues bothering on payment of 142% and 30% arrears to entitled pensioners, monthly arrears owed by the past administration, gratuities of those who retired before 2012, full monthly pension among others.

He noted that most of these demands were being touched by the state government-based on available resources from the Federal allocation and internally generated revenue.

Some pensioners in Osun State had last week reportedly protested in Ile-Ife over nonpayment of gratuities and pension arrears owed by the administration of immediately past government of Mr Rauf Aregbesola.

A veteran journalist and former Director-General, Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, OSBC, Mr. Wale Idowu has renewed the call on media personnel to imbibe training and re-training for efficient service delivery.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria in Ilesa, on this year’s World Radio Day, the former OSBC DG described radio as the most effective information tool for the masses, hence operators of radio stations should ensure objectivity and accuracy in their programmes.

Mr. Idowu also advised broadcasters to place professionalism and social responsibility above commercialisation in the discharge of their duty.

In his contribution, a management staff of a private radio station in Ile-Ife, Mr. Adebola Abdullahi said he could not do without listening to the radio every day for information, education, and entertainment.

Mr. Abdullahi who appreciated the contributions of broadcasters and owners of radio stations to democracy and national development appealed to the federal and state governments to support the media.

Other listeners stressed the need for the government to license community radio stations to further inform and educate the people at the grassroots.
