Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Sen. Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II has congratulated the Muslims across the country on the occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration with a charge to them to deeply reflect on the historical and religious background of the annual celebration.

Oba Balogun, in a statement signed on his behalf by his Media Aide, Oladele Ogunsola and made available to journalists in Ibadan urged the adherents of the Islamic faith not to be carried away by winning and dinning that the slaughtering of rams would naturally attract, but the essence of the revered and significant event.
Asking the Islamic faithful to let the spirit of sacrifice occasioned by total submission to the will of the Almighty Allah as demonstrated by the patriarch of the religion, Ibrahim (PBUH) be their guide, the monarch maintained that it is only by that the purpose of the celebration would not be lost.

According to him, “as we join our compatriots across the globe to celebrate the all-important religious festival, we should be mindful of the purpose of what we are celebrating. We must be conscious of the eternal love of the Almighty Allah for mankind, the undiluted faith in Him as well as total submission to His will which all manifested when the event that culminated in this celebration was originally held.

“It is also a time for sober reflection on the practice of Islam in the country. How loving are we to our fellow Muslims? How loving are we to our fellow citizens that do not share our religious beliefs? Are we worthy of people that others would want to follow and seek our Allah for the purpose of worshipping Him? All these are what we should also ponder on as we celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir”, the statement added.

Olubadan equally charged Muslims to take note of the mood of the nation as they celebrate, stressing that the level of insecurity in the land is of serious concern and notice must be taken of this very important aspect of the nation’s life in the course of the celebration. “It is very important that we do everything with moderation and shun anything that can trigger violence”, Olubadan added.

The monarch also counselled that the occasion should be used to prayerfully intercede for the country not only to succeed in her current war against insurgency and other challenges but also to have peaceful, free and fair elections come 2023, reminding that the next year election is capable of making or mar this country.

Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Senator Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II on Tuesday expressed delight at the rate of reforms being carried out by the management of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), describing them as commendable and better way of reducing crimes in the society.

This was as the monarch welcomed the new Commissioner of Police, Compol Moses Adebowale Williams to the state with a pledge to do all within his power to assist him to succeed, recalling that he had enjoyed robust relationship with the successive police boss in the state.

Oba Balogun spoke at his Alarere residence while reacting to the reports made by the newly posted Assistant Comptroller of Ibadan Command of Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Samuel Ayodele Olusola, who led other management staff of the Command on courtesy visit to the monarch.

In the statement credited to Olubadan by his Media Aide, Oladele Ogunsola, Oba Balogun said what’s going on in the Command and by extension at the national level “is reformation of Nigerians in a way and should be encouraged. When people who are convicted are given human treatment at the Correctional Centres and truly become changed persons, we are working towards a better society”.

The NCS boss, Olusola had told Kabiyesi the various efforts being made to change the punitive orientation of the former prison system to correctional one in order to make ex-convict suitable for integration back into the society. He disclosed that the Command had produced four sets of National Education Council (NECO) examinations candidates, adding “the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Open University (NOUN) are set to come to the Command.

“Among our inmates is a P.hD holder. Aside the academic exposure, we also organize training for our inmates in various trades towards making them useful citizens when they come out of our centre. For instance, our inmates just received training on paint making and what they produced was used to paint the centre. So, when they are released, they can go into paint making, painting or selling of paint materials”, he added.

Olusola also made it known that the NCS does things that can appeal to the inmates sense of reasoning such as allowing visitation and interaction with them by the elders, Churches and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and even, the manners of approach by the officials have changed from the harsh and negative tones to warmth and encouraging approach, noting that all these have been proving effective in remoulding and reshaping the convicts.

The Oyo NCS boss hinted of the challenges confronting the Command, principal among which is lack of portable water and used the occasion to solicit for the intervention of the monarch and other critical stakeholders in the society, stressing that inability of the inmates to have access to water for usage as expected of decent human beings could erode their good works.

The new Oyo CP, who also led his top echelon of the Command to the Olubadan said the visit was to seek Kabiyesi’s blessings in the onerous task of giving the state protection. He enjoined Oba Balogun to rally his Council members, Mogajis and Baales for cooperation with the Command towards giving maximum policing to Ibadanland and by extension the entire state, adding, “the job of securing the society is a collective task and there is nothing with can do on our own without the cooperation of our fathers and other stakeholders”.

The absence of Rashidi Ladoja, Osi Olubadan today prevented the formal announcement of Lekan Balogun, Otun Olubadan, as Olubadan-elect.

Theresa Oyekanmi, Iyalode of Ibadan, was also absent.

Ladoja, former governor of Oyo State, is next after Balogun in the Egbe Agba (civil) line while Oyekanmi is the representative of all women in the Olubadan in council.
The meeting had become important following the departure of Oba Saliu Adetunji.

While Iyalode had, in a letter, lent her support to the nomination of Balogun as Olubadan-elect, Ladoja has advised the former senator to go withdraw the case in court to allow him to be eligible for the exalted throne.

Traditionally, when there is a vacancy, the next in the same line, after the person to be announced, is saddled with the task. In the present case, Ladoja will have to nominate Balogun while Owolabi Olakulehin, who is Balogun Olubadan, will second. This is so because Balogun cannot nominate himself and does not need to be present.

After that, two documents — one affirming Balogun’s nomination, and the one containing list of the immediate three high chiefs in the civil line after the nominee, would be sent to the governor.

At today’s meeting, which held behind closed doors and lasted two hours at the Mapo Palace, all other high chiefs were present.

Journalists were barred from covering proceedings of the meeting.

All the high chiefs, who are also called kingmakers, also declined comment and refused to speak with newsmen on the outcome of the meeting.

This was just all entrances leading to the palace were barricaded by policemen against possible breach of law and order.

OYOINSIGHT.COM recall that the Olubadan Advisory Council had summoned the meeting of all Ibadan kingmakers to discuss the appointment into the vacant stool of the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Some of the kingmakers had last week converged on Mapo hall and announcedBalogun, as the next Olubadan.

With the development, the kingmakers have used 9 out the 21 days they have to nominate and ratify the appointment of Oba Adetunji’s successor.
