As campaigns for the 2025 Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo State Council election intensify, Chairmanship aspirant of the Divine Mandate Team, Mr Raji Adebayo, has pledged to improve members’ welfare if elected.

Mr Adebayo made the commitment during a campaign visit to the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Ibadan Zonal Station at the Broadcasting House, Dugbe, Ibadan.

He assured members of the NUJ Chapel in the station that his administration would ensure equal treatment for all journalists without bias.

The chairmanship aspirant also promised to prioritise infrastructure by renovating the abandoned Health Centre Facility and providing modern facilities at the NUJ Oyo State Council Secretariat in Iyaganku, Ibadan, to enhance healthcare services for union members.

In his remarks, a past Chairman, NUJ Oyo State Council, and Deputy Director, News and Current Affairs, FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Adewumi Faniran, emphasised that member welfare remains central to the union’s constitution.

He urged Mr Adebayo to remain committed to his promises if elected.

Mr Faniran also advised the Divine Mandate Team to abide by the union’s campaign rules, refrain from hate speech and avoid actions capable of causing disaffection among contestants, urging them to uphold the constitution at all times.

Earlier, the team paid a courtesy visit to the Zonal Director, FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Dominic Mokikan, who encouraged them to demonstrate humility in victory and embrace servant leadership while fulfilling all campaign promises.

Among the contestants is a staff member of the FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Moses Morenikeji, who is vying for the position of Treasurer.

The NUJ election holds on December 9, 2025.

It was a day of accolades and honour as family, friends, colleagues and mentees celebrated the impactful life of a renowned scholar, security and policing researcher, Professor Oyesoji Aremu as he marked his diamond jubilee.

According to the biblical saying, “Seest thou a man diligent in his work? He shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men.” (Proverbs 22:29)

This best describes the honour done to the celebrant as dignitaries from all walks of life registered their presence at the well-decorated arena venue of the event.

Among the guests were the wife of Ekiti State governor, Dr Olayemi Biodun-Oyebanji, chief executive officers, academics, members of the Nigerian Baptist Convention and kinsmen from Ejigbo Local Government, Osun State, among whom was the Deputy Director, News and Current Affairs, Radio Nigeria, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Adewumi Faniran who all gave the gorgeously dressed celebrant and his wife, Olajumoke a rousing welcome as they danced to the tunes supplied by the band.

Tributes poured in when a memoir written by the celebrant which chronicled his experience as the Director, University of Ibadan Distance Learning Centre, UIDLC, was unveiled by attending dignitaries.

Reviewing the book, entitled: “My Unibadan Distance Learning Centre Years: A Memoir”, Professor Francis Egbokhare of the Department of Linguistics, University of Ibadan said the ten-chapter book, with a foreword by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Aare Afe Babalola, x-rayed the shortcomings and gains of open distance learning in Nigeria as well as recommended workable realities of running this mode of learning as a venture.

In an address, the wife of Ekiti State governor, Dr. Olayemi Abiodun-Oyebanji described the celebrant as accommodating and humane in all his dealings, saying the quality endeared him to numerous appointments including his recent engagement as Deputy Vice Chancellor, Achievers University, Ondo.

Speaking on the many impacts of Professor Oyesoji Aremu, two guest directors, Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan, Professor Olawale Albert and the Director General, Development Agenda for Western Nigeria, DAWN Commission, Seye Oyeleye described him as an intelligent and foremost researcher in policing.

Wife of the celebrant, Deaconess Olajumoke Aremu described her husband as hardworking and caring while also appreciating God for sparing his life.

In an interview, the celebrant, Professor Oyesoji Aremu, said his attainment of age sixty was by God’s grace and opportunity to serve God and humanity.

Professor Oyesoji Aremu, a professor of Guidance Counseling and Deputy Vice Chancellor, Achievers University, Ondo, is a well-travelled scholar who carved a niche for himself in the areas of policing and criminal justice as well as Open Distance e-learning globally.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo State Council, led by its Chairman, Chief Ademola Babalola has paid a condolence visit to the management of the News and Current Affairs Department, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Dugbe, Ibadan over the demise of a just retired staff of the Department, Alhaji Adeniyi Odekunle who passed away on Wednesday.

Chief Babalola described the late Odekunle as a thoroughbred journalist and unionist par excellence who served the union up to the national level as a member of its executive.

According to him, the council received the news of the demise of Alhaji Odekunle with shock, but with solace in God that the deceased was a selfless, cerebral and committed member of the union whose legacy would not be forgotten anytime soon.

He prayed to God to comfort the family, management, members of staff of the FRCN and friends of the deceased during this trying and grieving period.

Responding, the Deputy Director, News and Current Affairs who is also an immediate past Chairman of NUJ, Oyo State Council, Mr Adewumi Faniran who received the visiting NUJ executive members on behalf of the management and members of the department commended the Chief Babalola-led executive for the condolence visit, saying the deceased was a professional who had paid his dues as a reporter of note, a painstaking editor and skilful commentary writer.

Mr Faniran regretted that the deceased who was due to be celebrated on Thursday by the department, having served meritoriously for 35 years, could not see the day.

He prayed for his soul to rest in peace, adding that, his impact on the lives of others remained unquantifiable.

The lingering leadership crisis in the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has been resolved.

This followed a reconciliatory meeting initiated by some Veteran Journalists including Alhaji Kola Animashaun, Pa Stephen Akinwale, Asiwaju Tunde Abiodun and Alhaji Bashir Omotoso, which was held at the Studio One, Broadcasting House, Dugbe, Ibadan.

Addressing the representatives of the two factions, Alhaji Animashaun appreciated the former Oyo NUJ Chairman, Mr Adewumi Faniran and the current Chairman of the State Council, Mr Demola Babalola for accepting to sheath swords and appealed to aggrieved members of the two parties to allow peace to prevail.

Reacting, the former Oyo NUJ Chairman, who is also Deputy Director, News and Current Affairs Department, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Adewumi Faniran commended the negotiation team for facilitating the peace talk, stressing that he accepted the peaceful resolution for the progress of NUJ at the state and national level.

Mr Faniran, who also insisted that he was fighting a just course and had nothing against any individual, said that based on the resolution, he would accept to be seen and addressed as former chairman of the union in Oyo State.

Earlier, the NUJ Chairman, Mr Ademola Babalola said the former NUJ Chairman is a leader whom he respected so much.

Mr Babalola who appreciated the leadership role of Mr Faniran also commended the former leader of the union both at the state and national levels.

It would be recalled that members of NUJ, FRCN, Ibadan Chapel, had dragged the current executives of the State Council to court over the ineligibility of Mr Demola Babalola to contest in the 2019 election of the Council and since then, the Chapel had dissociated itself from the Council’s activities.

However, with the truce reached on Tuesday, the members who went to court had agreed to withdraw the case.
