Happy New Year, and welcome to 2024!

Do you know that the emergence or evolution of a “new, improved, and better” you is possible?

Do you know you can improve and be better in all areas of life where you have been struggling in the past?

All you need is a “Resolution to be better in the new year” or should I say you say a “new year resolution”.

A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, in which a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behaviour, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their behaviour at the beginning of a calendar year.

This is a very common practice across the world and in Nigeria too.

A lot of people make resolutions every New Year but many abandon it a few weeks into the year.

This is usually because of procrastination, lack of commitment and inconsistency among other factors.

Making resolutions alone is not always enough, to make a progress of note; there must be a plan and structure for sustainable inspiration, measurement, and accountability.

Overcoming procrastination and successfully following through on resolutions can be challenging but is certainly achievable.

Here are some tips to help you deal with procrastination and stay committed to your resolutions in 2024:

Set Realistic Goals:

–       Ensure your resolutions are S.M.A.R.T. that is: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

–       Realistic goals are more manageable and less likely to lead to procrastination.

Break It Down:

–       Divide larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks.

–       This makes the process less overwhelming and allows you to focus on one step at a time.

Prioritize Tasks:

–       Identify and prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines.

–       Tackling high-priority tasks first can create a sense of accomplishment and motivation.

Create a Schedule:

–       Develop a daily or weekly schedule that includes dedicated time for working on your resolutions.

–       Having a routine helps establish consistency.

Remove Distractions:

–       Identify and minimize distractions in your environment.

–       Turn off unnecessary notifications and create a workspace conducive to productivity.

Visualize Success:

–       Envision the positive outcomes of achieving your resolutions.

–       Visualizing success can motivate you to take action and overcome procrastination.

–       Have an idea of what success looks like for you.

Build Habits Gradually:

–       Focus on building new habits gradually rather than trying to make drastic changes overnight.

–       Small, consistent steps lead to lasting habits.

Accountability Partner:

–       Share your resolutions with a friend, family member, or colleague who can provide support and hold you accountable.

–       Plan regular check-ins to keep you motivated.

Celebrate Progress:

–       Acknowledge and celebrate small victories along the way.

–       Recognizing your progress reinforces positive behaviour.

–       Celebrating small wins helps you enjoy the journey to your target.

Learn from Setbacks:

–       Understand that setbacks are a normal part of the process.

–       Instead of seeing them as failures, view them as opportunities to learn and adjust your approach.

Stay Flexible:

–       Be open to adjusting your resolutions or strategies if needed.

–       Life is dynamic, and flexibility can help you navigate unexpected challenges.

–       The fact that someone else successfully used a strategy does not mean that is the only way to do such things.

Self-Compassion:

–       Be kind to yourself.

–       If you face setbacks or temporary lapses in motivation, practice self-compassion and refocus on your goals.

Conclusion:

Always remember that forming new habits and achieving resolutions is a journey that requires patience and persistence.

Stay committed, stay positive, and embrace the opportunity for growth and improvement in this New Year. Happy New Year once again, have a very productive 2024!

The Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, Most Rev John Oyejola, has admonished Nigerians not to lose courage in the new year despite the nation’s condition.

The cleric, in his new year message made available to newsmen in Osogbo by the Director, Social Communication Commission of the diocese, Rev Fr Anthony Omodunbi, said if Nigerians could scale through the storm of 2021, then they should trust God that 2022 would usher good tidings.

Bishop Oyejola urged citizens of Osun State not to allow what he described as “stomach infrastructure” to determine their political path adding that if they do, miscreants and scoundrels would continue to rule them and their children.

He said, “Looking back through year 2021, there is no mincing of words that the journey was very rough and tough. We continue to face the untoward effects of covid-19, the battering economic hardship, the incessant high level of insecurity across the country. It is like the country is on reverse mode or in a state of anarchy. My people, it was not easy. Despite all, we continue to show how resilient we are as people of this great nation, and most importantly, as a people of God. Truly, our spirit refuses to die because we are a grateful people. In the midst of the challenges, we continue to see reasons to be thankful to God. Scaling through the storm of 2021 only shows that the God never left us.

“My beloved people, we have commenced another journey now and I know we all have fears, we have doubts, we feel insecure but take courage, do not be afraid. It seems as if our dear nation is in a hopeless state without certainty of the future.  However, remember that the season of Christmas always remind us that God is with us. Emmanuel. The book of Deuteronomy encourages us to be strong  and courageous, not to be afraid or terrified  for the Lord our God goes with us and will never abandon us (Deuteronomy 31:6).

“Kindly allow me to use the words of Robert F. Kennedy to speak to our leaders that, what we need in this country is not division; not hatred, what we need in Nigeria is not violence and lawlessness, but is love and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who suffer within our country irrespective of their ethnicity, religion, sex or political affiliation.

“My people of Osun State, this year is gubernatorial election, I call on you to exercise your civic responsibility responsibly. Enough of stomach infrastructure directing your political path. Go out to vote and vote right because if you do not, miscreants and scoundrels will continue to determine your future and that of your children. My beloved youth, do not be used as instruments of electoral manipulations and violence. Be courageous and take the bull by the horn and let us know that you are the true leaders of tomorrow.

“As we commence this year, I admonish us as St. Paul did in his letter to the Philippians that whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, anything worthy of praise, let your heart dwell on them this year and it shall be well with you and your family. Amen.

Once again, I wish you a happy new year.”

This New Year’s Eve is being celebrated like no other in most of the world, with many bidding farewell to a year they’d prefer to forget.

From the South Pacific to New York City, pandemic restrictions on open air gatherings saw people turning to made-for-TV fireworks displays or packing it in early since they could not toast the end of 2020 in the presence of friends or carousing strangers.

As midnight rolled from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas, the New Year’s experience mirrored national responses to the virus itself. Some countries and cities canceled or scaled back their festivities, while others without active outbreaks carried on like any other year.

Australia was among the first to ring in 2021. In past years, 1 million people crowded Sydney’s harbor to watch fireworks. This time, most watched on television as authorities urged residents to stay home to see the seven minutes of pyrotechnics that lit up the Sydney Harbor Bridge and its surroundings.

In New York’s Times Square, the ball dropped like always, but police fenced off the site synonymous with New Year’s Eve to prevent crowds of any size from gathering.

Another of the world’s most popular places to be on December 31, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, pressed ahead with its revelry despite a surge of infections. Images of masked health care workers briefly lit up Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, before fireworks exploded in the sky over the building. Tens of thousands of people flooded the streets and squares marked out for social distancing were largely ignored.

Still, the pandemic robbed the night of its freewheeling spirit. Authorities implemented a raft of anti-virus measures to control rowdy crowds in downtown Dubai. At luxury bars and restaurants, music blared and people drank, but dancing was strictly prohibited.

The gleam of Las Vegas brought a similar crowd, with tens of thousands of people walking on the Strip by early evening despite a plea from the governor to avoid gatherings.

South Africans were also urged to cancel parties. Many instead lit candles as a way to honor health workers and people who have died in the COVID-19 pandemic.

In many European countries, authorities warned they were ready to clamp down on revelers breaching public health rules, including nightly curfews in France, Italy, Turkey, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Greece.

“No one will be on the streets after 10 p.m. (Athens) will be a dead city to make sure no more restrictions are imposed,” said Greece’s public order minister, Michalis Chrisohoidis.

France’s government flooded the streets with 100,000 law enforcement officers to enforce the nationwide curfew.

A few families gathered in Madrid’s sunny central Puerta de Sol square to listen to the rehearsal of the traditional ringing of the bells that is held at midnight. They followed the Spanish custom of eating 12 grapes with each stroke of the bells before police cleared the area that normally hosts thousands of revelers.

“That’s it, life goes on. Despite what happened we have to celebrate,” said Cesar Pulido, 32, who celebrated in Madrid. “We have to eat the 12 grapes in order to ask 12 wishes like health, love, money, everything and good vibes.”

As the clock struck midnight, fireworks erupted over Moscow’s Red Square and the Acropolis in Athens, but the explosions echoed across largely empty streets as people obeyed orders to stay home.

From Berlin to Brussels, normally raucous celebrations were muted by the pandemic.

Even the British government, keen to celebrate the U.K.’s definitive split from the EU, ran ads imploring the public to “see in the New Year safely at home” amid a record number of newly confirmed cases. London’s annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display was canceled, but an unannounced display was broadcast before midnight, with tributes to health care workers, a reference to the Black Lives Matter movement and even a voice saying “you’re on mute” in reference to a bugbear of virtual work meetings.

In Scotland, residents normally mark the new year with parties and “first footing,” where a home’s first visitor of the year comes bearing gifts. The tradition is among the list of activities the government warned against.

“No gatherings, no house parties, no first-footing. Instead, we should bring in 2021 in our own homes with just our own households,” Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

Many around the world looked toward 2021 with hope, partly due to the arrival of vaccines that offer a chance of beating the pandemic.

“Although this was a very difficult year, a year of many losses, I’m grateful to be safe, to follow the rules, to do my part,” said Marilia Rafael, 33, who celebrated in Portugal, “and would like to ask that the next year may be better for all of us, may it be a year of hope, peace and love.”

More than 1.8 million deaths worldwide have been linked to the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

Some leaders, such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, used their New Year’s address to thank citizens for enduring hardship during the lockdown and criticize those who defied the rules. Others, like Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella, flew the flag for science, urging citizens to discard their fears about getting immunized against COVID-19.

“Faced with an illness so highly contagious, which causes so many deaths, it’s necessary to protect one’s own health and it’s dutiful to protect those of the others – family members, friends, colleagues,”’ said Mattarella, 79.

In Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, where official fireworks and celebrations also were canceled to limit the rapid spread of the virus, police officers braced for what promised to be a long night.

Rio officials decided to seal off Copacabana, where millions of people dressed in white usually gather on the beach to marvel at fireworks and attend large concerts. This year, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Jan. 1, only local residents will be able to access the city’s iconic shore, authorities said.

In South Korea, Seoul’s city government canceled its annual New Year’s Eve bell-ringing ceremony in the Jongno neighborhood for the first time since the event was first held in 1953, months after the end of the Korean War.

New Zealand, which is two hours ahead of Sydney, and several of its South Pacific island neighbors that also have no active COVID-19 cases held their usual New Year’s activities.

In Chinese societies, the virus ensured more muted celebrations of the solar New Year, which is less widely observed than the Lunar New Year that in 2021 will fall in February. Initial reports about a mystery respiratory illness sickening people in the Chinese city of Wuhan emerged exactly a year ago.

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has urged Nigerians to drive safely and stay safe as they enter into the new year, saying all bad driving habits should be discarded while the good lessons learnt and practised during the outgoing year should be sustained with a commitment to ensuring personal safety and health of the individuals.

This is contained in the New Year message to Nigerians by the Corps Marshal of FRSC as part of the ongoing sensitization efforts by the Corps to curtail the spread of COVID-19 and ensuring public safety through adherence to traffic rules and regulations.

According to a press release signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Marshal expressed gratitude to the Almighty God for the grace of protection and guidance given to the nation in the face of the various health, safety and security challenges experienced in the outgoing year.

He therefore, appealed for sustained consciousness by people to overcome the challenges in the New Year.

The Corps Marshal particularly enjoined members of the public not to violate the guidelines put in place by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, stressing the need for people to regularly wash their hands with soap, wear face masks and observe social distancing.

These he said, remain the best preventive measures against the infectious disease threatening the entire world through the second wave of the pandemic.

“We must remain vigilant in all that we do, to avoid a situation where our actions and inactions could contribute to the spread of the dreaded disease,” he stated.

The Press Release further discloses that though the Corps Marshal was pleased with the conduct of most drivers during the recent Christmas celebration which made the rate and fatalities of road traffic crashes manageable.

He however cautioned that if such good habits were not sustained in the New Year, there could be a resurgence of crash situation which could undermine the gains made from the special patrol.

“Every Nigerian must remain committed to tackling the challenges which road safety and COVID-19 pose to the nation’s health,  safely, security and wellbeing by doing what is right at all times,” he further stated.

On the most common factors responsible for fatal crashes during the Christmas celebration, the Corps Marshal restated his earlier observations on the pervasiveness of speeding as a causative factor, noting that Commanding Officers have been given a marching order to force down the rate of speed induced crashes through aggressive enforcement of the laws on speed limiting device.

“The discovery that some Nigerians are still flouting the law on use of speed limiting devices in their vehicles resulting in the upsurge in speed related crashes recorded during the special patrol was unfortunate. But I want to assure all road users that such abdication of responsibility by the drivers would not be tolerated in the New Year, “he warns.

Oyeyemi commended all the stakeholders that joined the road safety campaigns during the festive periods to make the roads safer, adding that road safety remains a shared responsibility which no single organisation can tackle all alone without support and collaboration of relevant stakeholders.

He specially expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR for rendering all necessary moral and logistics support for the success of the campaigns with particular reference to prompt approval by the Federal Government to the third edition of the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy Document which will increase the impetus of road safety sensitisation programmes in the New Year.

The FRSC Corps Marshal called on all Nigerians to embrace the ongoing safer road campaign and make it an all round success for quick socioeconomic development of the nation.

He also reminded Nigerians that it’s only the living that can celebrate, stressing that speeding must be contained by all means, despite its thrilling effects.

While admonishing Nigerians on their personal responsibility to the campaigns to make the roads safer, Oyeyemi further urged the people to remain active by always observing the traffic rules and regulations and reporting road and other emergencies promptly to the FRSC toll free line: 122 or the studios of the National Traffic Radio-107.1fm through the telephone lines: 08052998090 or 09067000015 for prompt response.

As he wished all Nigerians safer and prosperous new year, the Corps Marshal assured the nation that FRSC would continue to be vigilant in safeguarding the roads throughout the new year and beyond for safety and security of the people.

He further appealed to all to abide by the safety measures put in place to guarantee safety and security of all members of the public.

The tick of the clock on 12 midnight on January 1 ushered in a new year 2021 while eclipsing 2020.

The year 2020 has been described as an exceptional year, the sort that the world had never witnessed because of the global lockdown and its attendant economic, social and psychological tolls on people.

Besides the impact of the covid-19, the country also contended with serious issues such as terrorist attack, kidnapping, banditry, herdsmen assault, social unrest, ENDSARs protest, corruption, unemployment prolonged ASUU strike.

There were also severe economic crunch fuelled by increase in electricity tariff, fuel price and value added tax leading to price increase of some goods and services.

Hence, as the nation and the world over ushered in New Year, it is obvious that a lot of issues are still begging to be properly fixed in 2021.

The most important among these is the cyclic spate of insecurity, which continues to frustrate efforts of security agencies.

Insurgents continued to carry out attacks throughout last year, while kidnapping soared to record high with ransom payments and at times death of victims.

It is imperative that government reassess current efforts of security agencies, re-strategizes the means employed in combating the menace insecurity constitutes, make changes where necessary, and get personnel well equipped.

It is gratuitous to write that Federal Government towards the end of 2020 finally threw open the country’s borders, which were closed both for security and economic reasons.

The step, no doubt brought relief to Nigerians, whose means of livelihood was connected to the borders, because prices of some goods soared as a result of unscrupulous producers exploiting government’s good intention to jack up prices.

However, in this New Year, government would still need to do more as prices of food and other essential items are still on the high side.

It is good to note that President Muhammadu Buhari has acknowledged this with a commitment to addressing the issue headlong.

Also, in the words of the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zianab Ahmed, Nigeria may be out of the current economic recession by the first quarter of 2021.

To achieve this feat, the masses expect Nigeria’s economy to diversify as the country is still heavily reliant on oil.

According to the organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) petroleum represents more than 80 percent of the nation’s total export revenue.

The present administration needs to tap more into the agricultural sector where the country can put millions of the unemployed youths to work.

For about nine months in the year 2020, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, went on strike.

The dispute kept students at home robbing them of a calendar year of study.

Government and ASUU need to avoid a repeat of this in the New Year by keeping to terms of agreement, giving room for dialogue and compromises to resolve any emerging issues or grey areas without delay.

Covid-19 pandemic still remains with the world with a second surge emerging in December.

Federal and State governments did creditably well to curtail its spread in the country last year.

However, it is expected that authorities will not rest on their laurel to ensure that the second wave of the pandemic is checked, while citizens should also play their parts by adhering to covid-19 protocols.

Now that 2021 is here, how the government manages the three hundred and sixty five days ahead is very crucial, as Nigerians expect their lots to be better off than the trauma of 2020.
