The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council haa congratulated the winners of the National Assembly elections, conducted on Saturday in the state, with a charge to the victorious candidates to be magnanimous in victory.

This was contained in a statement personally endorsed by the Chairman of NUJ in the state, Chief Ademola Babalola, and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the state capital through the Union’s State Secretary, Sola Oladapo.

The candidates of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state won the three senatorial seats of Oyo South, Oyo Central and Oyo North. The three senators-elect are Senator Abdulfatai Buhari ,who has been re-elected for a third consecutive term for Oyo North. Dr Yunus Akintunde for Oyo Central, and and Chief Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, a former Secretary to Oyo State Government for Oyo South.

Some APC House of Representatives candidates and their counterparts in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), across some of the 14 federal constituencies have also been declared winners in their respective constituencies.

The NUJ Chairman also congratulated the winners of the election into the House of Representatives, including Hon. Abass Adigun Agboworin of PDP (Ibadan North East/South East); Anthony Adepoju of PDP (Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North); Oyeshina Oyedeji of PDP (Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Iwajowa/Kajola); and Hon. Stanley Olajide Odidiomo of PDP (Ibadan North West/South West).

Mr Babalola also felicitated with house of representatives members who won in APC and PDP respectively

Describing the election held over the weekend in the State as largely peaceful, the NUJ Chairman, Babalola, remarked that the winners have paid their dues in the politics of the state and worked very hard to emerge victorious in their respective constituencies.

Babalola said: “The elections into the senatorial seats and House of Representatives in Oyo State were largely free, fair and credible with the resultant effects of throwing up veteran politicians, who obviously have paid their dues in the political firmament of the state.

“Serving Senator Buhari has shown in deeds and actions that he is truly a committed lawmaker with very many landmark achievements and unprecedented empowerment of the people of Oyo North. He was a former House of Representatives member; Commissioner at various times and now serving his second term in the Red Chambers.

‘For Dr. Yunus Akintunde, he is a household name in the politics of the state. He has held very many appointive positions as Commissioner at various times during late Lam Adesina and late Abiola Ajimobi administrations. He is a versatile politician with strong credentials and wide connections with key political figures across the federation.

“It is an open secret that Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli is an archetypal politician with cult-like grassroots followers. He was the first elected Executive Chairman of the most populous and cosmopolitan local government in the state, Ibadan North at age of 28. He thereafter became the Secretary to the State Government and later the first Chief of Staff to any Governor in the state. He became Chairman, Odu’a Investment Company Limited and he is one politician, who mixes freely with low and powerful people in the state and was widely respected for his humility and unassuming personality.’

The NUJ Chairman in the state also enjoined them to use their new positions to promote good governance at the national level and to attract worthy and life-changing projects to the Oyo State. Babalola, however, expressed his optimism that they would achieve greatly and affect many lives positively.

Speaking on some other eminent candidates in the just concluded election, especially Chief Joseph Tegbe, the PDP candidate for Oyo South; Shina Peller, the Accord candidate for Oyo Central; Engr Faozey Nurudeen, the Accord candidate for Oyo North; Chief Kolapo Kola-Daisi, the Accord candidate for Oyo South; as well as Asiwaju Rotimi Ajanaku, the Accord candidate for Ibadan South West/North West Federal Constituency; among others, Babalola admonished them to cooperate fully with the winners; put the election behind themselves and look into the future with renewed hope.

“Let me hasten to put on record that all the winners and those at the receiving end put up their best efforts while the election lasted, they must however realised that everybody has his/her appointed time otherwise called ‘time zone in spiritual realm’.

“No one can get to any position without the approval of Almighty God. Then, as it is often said, God’s time is the best. This critical point or moment is not the end, but a bend. I am sure that better days are ahead for everybody,’ Babalola stated.

As the nation grapples with challenges borne out of scarcity of naira notes and fuel price hikes, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Zone B southwest states urged broadcasters in the radio stations across the country, to ensure that the medium of communication is deployed to promote peace and stability.

The Vice-President of  NUJ, Zone B, Mrs Ronke Afebioye -Samo, in a press statement to commemorate the 2023 World Radio Day said, this year’s world radio day anniversary is significant as its theme anchors on Peace, she, therefore, urged Journalists in Radio stations to work towards promoting peace among the citizenry in discharging their duties.

Her words: “As we mark World Radio Day today, with the theme, Radio And Peace, l urge our colleagues in this veritable platform of communication to promote peace and stability in discharging their duties.

Radio is a very instrumental and impactful medium of communication. It is very effective in reaching the grassroots. Besides, radio’s advantage in being accessible to virtually all classes of society makes it very useful for promoting development messages, policies and plans.

World Radio Day is an International Day celebrated on Feb.13th of every year as decided by member states of UNESCO and adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2012.

Radio was adjudged a mass media reaching the widest audience and a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity.

Radio as a low-cost medium was specifically made to reach remote communities and vulnerable people, offering a platform to intervene in public debate, irrespective of people’s educational level.

The WRD is celebrated to preserve the timeless medium and create awareness of the importance of radio.

Radio stations shape public opinions and frame a narrative that can influence domestic and international decision-making processes.

We, therefore, urge our colleagues to leverage on the advantages of the radio to promote peace, especially during a time like this when our dear country is witnessing challenges of fuel scarcity and price hikes, including scarcity of naira notes which have led to protests and dissatisfaction from some quarters in the country.

It is pertinent that we use our medium to disseminate messages that will bring succour and calm the frayed nerves of our people.

I also congratulate all broadcasters in the Nigeria radio industry and felicitate them on this important celebration,” she said.

The roles of journalists towards the peaceful conduct of the 2023 general elections came to the fore at a one-day training organised recently in Ibadan for media practitioners.

The training, organised by the Corporate Accountability & Public Participation Africa, CAPPA, was well attended by journalists from broadcast, print and online media organisations.

The Executive Director of CAPPA, Mr Oluwafemi Akinbode, in his address of welcome, said the election is as old as the country itself.

Mr Akinbode maintained that what journalists feed the public can either promote peace or incite violence before, during and after the election, hence his advice that journalists should be conscious of what they publish or broadcast.

In a presentation on “Understanding Conflicts and Drivers of Conflicts”, a lecturer at the Lagos State University, Dr Tunde Akanni, opined that conflicts are functions of peculiar incompatible interests of stakeholders.

He identified factors responsible for political violence to include but not limited to, name callings, politicians’ inordinate ambitions, bias by the electoral umpire, unacceptable interference by the international communities and inciting or fake news by the media.

Dr Akanni reiterated the need for journalists to always fact-check their reports before being published or broadcast.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the International Press Centre and a former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Lagos Council, Mr Lanre Arogundade, who spoke on “Election and Conflict Sensitive Reporting”, advised journalists to be conflict-sensitive, reject and refute hateful comments from guests/politicians that feature on their programmes or interview.

He stated that no story is worth the life of any journalist.

Participants at the training were also taken through the Electoral Law and Guide for Media Coverage of Election Results by a legal officer with CAPPA, Aderonke Ige and had another session on “Newsroom Culture and Peace building in Election Reporting” anchored by a Development Strategist, Dr Olayinka Oyegbile.

This is sequel upon the alleged shooting of the Nation’s newspaper correspondent in Osun state, Mr Toba Adedeji by men of the Osun state Police Command in Osogbo.

The statement further calls on the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, to take this urgent step in order to safe the state from incessant unrest and crisis due to lackadaisical approach to senisitive issues of security by the leadership of the command.

The Osun Council of NUJ describes the action of the officers of the command as unfortunate, barbaric, uncivilized and demeaning, especially in a democratic environment where citizens possess the right to ventilate their grievances through peaceful protest.

A Federal High court sitting in Abeokuta has struck out the Fundamental Human right suit filed by Mr. Ayokunle Ewuoso and Mr. Sina Oduntan against the Ogun state commissioner of Police and Mrs. Oluremi Olugbenro to challenge their arrest over the assault on female journalists at Iwe Iroyin, Oke Ilewo Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ in February this year.

Ruling on the suits marked FHC/AB/FHR/33/22 and FHC/AB/FHR/34/21, the presiding Judge, Justice Remi Oguntoyinbo awarded the cost of forty thousand naira against each of the applicants as cost for bringing the second respondent, Mrs. Olugbenro to court.

Counsel to the first and second applicants, Mr. Ayokunle Ewuosho and Mr. Sina Oduntan, Mr. Deji Eniseyin who was conspicuously absent in court having been served with counter affidavit had filed an application to discontinue the case claiming that the matter had been settled amicably.

Counsel to the second defendant, Mrs. Oluremi Olugbenro, Mr. Gani Ogunsanwo while reacting to the submission that the matter had been settled informed the court that he was not aware of any settlement and asked the court to award costs against each of the applicant if the court was inclined to grant the application for withdrawal.

Mr Ogunsanwo then pleaded that the judge should award fifty thousand naira as cost against each of the applicants for bringing his client to the court.

Counsel to the first defendant, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adeyemi Olukoya had also informed the court that he was misled that the applicants had filed applications to discontinue the suit.

Justice Oguntoyinbo in her ruling on the matter, agreed that the applicants had the right to discontinue with the matter, but pointed out that they could not run away from the liabilities.

The Judge stated that the second respondent, (Mrs. Remi Olugbenro) having filed the necessary counter affidavits before the court had joined issues in law and was entitled to cost.

She then awarded the cost of forty thousand naira against Mr. Ayokunle Ewuoso, the first applicant and the sum of forty thousand naira against Mr. Sina Oduntan, the second applicant.

The third suit filed by Mr. Abiodun Taiwo, which was earlier slated for hearing on Tuesday, 19th October 2021 but could not be heard due to the public holiday was however adjourned till 2nd of December 2021 for hearing at the same Federal High Court, Abeokuta.

The Yusuf Idris NUJ Presidential Campaign Council has condemned in strong terms, the decision of the 2021 Credentials Committee to commence campaigns for the forthcoming National Delegates Conference.

According to a statement signed by the National Coordinator, Yusuf Idris Presidential Campaign Council, Dahiru Muhammad, the decision of the Credentials Committee is in violation of an order by the National Industrial Court sitting in Lagos.

The Court order had restrained the Credentials Committee, the NUJ NEC and the President of the Union, Chris Isiguzo, from pursuing any act for the purposes of conducting election into National offices of NUJ pending hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed before the court.

The statement indicates that the Yusuf Idris Presidential campaign council has decided to halt any process for the launch of it’s campaigns until when the court order is vacated.

The statement reads in part:

“The Credentials Committee has directed for the commencement of campaigns by Friday, 17th September, 2021, in violation of a subsisting Exparte Order made by the National Industrial Court sitting in Lagos in the case filed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Ogun State Council in which the Court expressly restrained the Credentials Committee, the NUJ NEC and the outgoing President of the Union, Chris Isiguzo, from pursuing or executing any act for the purposes of conducting election into the National offices of the NUJ pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice filed before the Court. We have been briefed by our Legal Advisers that despite the expiration of 14 days since the issuance of that Order, it still subsists since the Motion on Notice could not be heard on the earlier set date”.

“Our position is in line with provisions of the Civil Procedure Rules of the National Industrial Court, 2017 as well as other relevant laws and judicial pronouncements in Nigeria.”

“In deference to this Interim Court Order under reference, our Campaign Council has decided to halt any process for the launch of our campaigns until when the Order is vacated. It should be noted that the decision to field Yusuf idris for President of our great Union stems from a desire to not only have a PRESIDENT WITH VERIFIABLE CREDENTIALS but also a National leadership that RESPECTS DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS, ESPECIALLY THE JUDICIARY, which is the last hope of the citizen.

We also note with dismay the reckless and irresponsible partisan actions of the National Credentials Committee in disqualifying some members of our team, including a sitting National Vice President, Edward Ogude and a former National Treasurer, Monic Okechukwu, on frivolous grounds. As Campaign Council let it be known that we are challenging that injustice.”

“Finally, we wish to appeal to our teeming supporters across the country to remain calm, resolute and focused assuring them that we will not rest on our oars until NUJ is rescued from the hands of people lacking in the affairs of honor. We have resolved not to play their game because the era of impunity is fast becoming extinct.”
