Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, has launched special twenty-four-hour operations ahead of the 22nd National Sports Festival, “Gateway Games 2024”, holding in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Waste Management, Mr Abayomi Hunye said all personnel and machinery of the Authority have been deployed to ensure a successful operation, aimed at keeping the state clean, healthier and safer from all environmental hazards before, during and after the festival.

Mr Hunye added that comprehensive arrangements have been made to manage waste effectively, including waste removal, refuse collection, to maintain cleanliness in all the competition venues across the State.

He therefore called on visitors and tourists visiting the state to be careful while driving and look out for OGWAMA Caution Signs, as its workers would be on twenty-four-hour special operations, and called on residents to maintain a clean environment.

The Special Adviser, who reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensure a clean, healthy and safe environment during the National Sports Festival” Gateway Games, also used the opportunity to welcome all athletes, officials, visitors and tourists to the state.

In the meantime, preparations have reached a crescendo at the 9 venues for various sporting events to be used by athletes from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, participating in the 22nd National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games 2024. 

Moshood Abiola Sports Complex, Kuto, Abeokuta is equipped for the opening ceremony and other games like Abula, Cricket, Tennis, Handball, Beach Volleyball, Swimming and Athletics, including Para and Deaf Athletics.

Baptist Boys High School, Saje Abeokuta, will host athletes for Boxing and kickboxing, while Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja Abeokuta, is the location for major indoor and outdoor games.

Other venues are Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, NYSC orientation Camp, Sagamu, Abeokuta Golf Club, Oke Mosan, Babcock University, Ilisan and  Ijebu Ode Stadium.

The biennial multi-sports event, which began in 1973 at the National Stadium, Surulere in Lagos, was conceived as a “unifying tool” for promoting peace and cross-cultural affiliation among Nigerians, following the Civil War of 1970.

Ogun State hosted the competition in 2006 and is set to make history and create memories with the GATEWAY GAMES 2024 between Friday, 16th and Friday, 30th May, 2025.

Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, is to embark on a special Sallah operation as part of its efforts to ensure cleaner environment.

The Coordinating Director of the Agency, Mr. Toyin Obatosin said in a statement in Abeokuta that special trucks would be deployed for day and night operations.

Mr Obatosin who pointed that there would also be an intense sweeping activities in more strategic locations across the State to sustain a cleaner environment throughout the Sallah period solicited the cooperation of residents with agency to make the exercise a huge success.

He stressed the need for the residents of the state to ensure that refuse generated especially from animals and livestock during the celebration are properly packed for easy collection. 

Mr Obatosin also encouraged motorists to be mindful of highway codes on the roads as Sweepers and other environmental workers would also be on duty throughout the period of Sallah special operation.

While wishing all Muslim faithful Eid Mubarak, he thanked residents of the State for their continuous cooperation with the State Waste Management Authority in its firm commitment to making  Ogun State cleaner.

Ogun State government is to set up a Sanitary Advisory Council for effective and efficient waste management reforms across the state.

The council which will be made up of waste management experts, chartered sanitary officials, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders in the sanitation subsector is to be chaired by the Commissioner for Environment or his designate.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, Mr Ola Oresanya announced this after a meeting between OGWAMA Management and the Directors of Water, Environment, and Sanitation Departments in all the twenty local government areas of the state in Abeokuta.

Mr Oresanya explained that the step was aimed at seeking better understanding between various stakeholders in the sanitation sub-sector in the state and local governments for a cleaner, healthier and safer Ogun State.

The Special Adviser to the governor on environment noted that the advisory council in the state and committees in the local government would synergize to improve on sanitation advocacy and monitor the activities of Private Sector Providers, PSP, responsible for waste evacuation in various communities for optimal performance.

He said the bodies would also jointly monitor and enforce proper waste disposal and sanitation in all markets across the state for healthy trading and cleaner market environment while premises sanitary inspection would to be intensified throughout the state for healthy living.

The Director of Water, Environment and Sanitation in Abeokuta South, Mr Emmanuel Sodeke thanked the state government for the new initiative and pledged their support to make it a huge success.
