Aiyedatiwa Rallies Support for Veterans, Fallen Heroes

Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies, describing their sacrifices as fundamental to Nigeria’s peace, unity, and survival.

The governor gave the assurance at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Juma’at Prayer, held on Friday, 9 January 2026, at the Central Mosque, Democracy Park, Akure.

While addressing the congregation, Governor Aiyedatiwa honoured officers and men of the Armed Forces who served the nation with courage and patriotism, particularly those who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

Represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Aminu Takuro, the governor said the annual remembrance provides an important opportunity for government and citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made by security personnel to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty.

He assured that the Ondo State Government would continue to prioritise the welfare of families of fallen heroes, while promoting unity and peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds.

Governor Aiyedatiwa commended security agencies in the state for their professionalism and effective collaboration in maintaining law and order.

He urged residents to continue supporting and appreciating ex-servicemen, paramilitary officers, and serving personnel.

“Our security personnel have chosen a path of sacrifice for the safety of our people. Many have paid the ultimate price, and their courage deserves our respect, support, and cooperation,” he said.

The governor also encouraged members of the public to support the Nigerian Legion by purchasing the Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem, noting that the gesture symbolises collective gratitude to veterans and fallen heroes.

He thanked the Chief Imam of Akure for his consistent prayers and moral support, describing them as vital to peace, stability, and progress in the state.

In his sermon, the Chief Imam of Akure, Alhaji Dr Abdulhakeem Yayi Akorede, called on leaders at all levels to sustain support for the Armed Forces and promote unity nationwide.

He commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for ongoing developmental projects across Akure and other parts of Ondo State, expressing confidence in the administration’s commitment to the welfare of security personnel.

Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, described the Remembrance Day as a solemn occasion to honour both living and deceased veterans.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families, describing it as a hallmark of compassionate governance.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Ondo State, Major Folorunso Ajibowu Akingboju (Rtd), praised the state government for its continued support to legion members.

He highlighted Governor Aiyedatiwa’s donation of his one-month salary toward the launch of the Remembrance Day emblem as a strong demonstration of leadership and solidarity.

The Juma’at service attracted a distinguished audience, including a representative of the Brigadier Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adebowale Lawal, members of the State Executive Council, security operatives, Nigerian Legion officials, women leaders, civil servants, and other dignitaries.

Aiyedatiwa Dissolves Cabinet, Exempts 2 Commissioners

Ondo State governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the dissolution of the State Executive Council, with immediate effect. 

A statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, however, says two commissioners were exempted.

They are the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kayode Ajulo and the Commissioner for Finance, Mrs Omowunmi Isaac. 

All the affected cabinet members are to hand over all government properties in their care to the accounting officers of their respective ministries.

Governor Aiyedatiwa thanked the cabinet members for their service and contributions to the development of Ondo State under his administration and wished them well in their future endeavours.

TB Joshua Laid To Rest

The remains of the late Televangelist, prophet T.B Joshua have been laid to rest.
Prophet T.B Joshua who died on 5th of June, 2021 at the age of fifty seven was buried at a particular spot in the church in accordance with his wish during his life time.
Ondo State Governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had earlier described Founder of the Synagogue Church of all Nations, Late Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua as a rare gem, humble, a worthy citizen and a true son of the state.
Governor Akerodolu gave the admonitions during the final burial rites of Prophet T.B Joshua in Lagos state.
The Governor said the humanitarian gesture of the prophet had touched lives of many irrespective of tribe and religion including his ho,town, Arigidi-Akoko.
Mr Akerodolu encouraged other men of God to imbibe Prophet T.B Joshua’s exemplary life by preaching and practicing love.
The Governor commiserated with the family, church and people of Arigidi-Akoko and prayed to God to give them fortitude to bear the loss.

Examining The Plight Of Nigerian Widows

In some parts of Nigeria, widows are still being humiliated, dehumanised and abused via various degrading customs, rites and rituals.

As the world celebrates Widows Day, staff reporter, Abiodun Akinluwa examines the plights of widows.

International Widows Day is a global awareness day taking place annually on June 23rd.

It was launched by the United Nations in 2010 to call attention to the violation of human rights that widows suffer in many countries following the death of their husbands.

In some parts of the country, widows are still made to go through all manner of ill-treatments rooted in cultural and traditional practices that dehumanise them. 

They are treated with no respect, suffer social exclusion, hunger and poverty along with their children while some were driven to suicide.

Speaking on this, an Akure-based journalist, Mr Ayodeji Moradeyo and a human right activist, Mrs Olamide Mary Falana condemned the untoward attitude of Nigerians towards widows.

Religious leaders, Imam Abolaji Kazeem and Pastor Remi Adesonmoye described as ungodly the treatment being meted on widows.

An official of the Ministry of Justice in Ondo State, Mrs Bunmi Arajuwa said there were extant laws protecting the rights of widows.

The wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has however taken up advocacy and campaign to share information on the rights of widows and collate their data with a view to helping them.

It is expected that, members of the society can also make a difference in restoring the hope of widows after the demise of their husbands in line with this year’s International Widows Day theme which is “Invisible Women, Invisible problems”.

Akeredolu Presents 159 Billion Naira 2021 Budget To ODHA

Ondo State Governor, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has presented a sum of one hundred and fifty-nine billion naira as budget proposal to the state Assembly for the 2021 fiscal year.

The governor represented by the Commissioner for Economic Planning & Budget, Pastor Emmanuel Igbasan at a presentation during plenary tagged the sum “Budget of Hope”.

The 2021 budget proposal is eight billion naira higher than the one hundred and fifty one billion naira revised budget of 2020 fiscal year.

The budget according to the governor was said to have been prepared on the projections of the 2021 to 2023 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) as required by Fiscal Responsibility Law passed by the Ondo State House of Assembly, ODHA.

In the budget, a total sum of one hundred and three billion naira has been budgeted for recurrent expenditure and fifty-six billion naira for capital expenditure while over thirteen billion naira was voted for debt services and twelve billion naira for statutory transfer.

Receiving the budget, the speaker, Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun, commended Governor Akeredolu for giving priority to all sectors in order to ensure all-round development of the state.

Mr Oleyelogun assured that the lawmakers would do the needful for thorough and speedy passage of the proposed budget estimates into law.

Amotekun: There’s no going back – Gov. Akeredolu

The Ondo State Governor, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu says no going back on Southwest Security Network, codenamed “Operation Amotekun”.

Governor Akeredolu stated this at the opening of public hearing on the law to establish the state security network and Amotekun corps organised by the Ondo State House of Assembly.

The governor noted that the public hearing was meant to take stakeholders’ contributions towards a formidable security network in the state and the southwest.

The Speaker, Mr. Bamidele Oleyelogun commended the turnout by stakeholders and urged to make contributions that would assist the lawmakers at reaching a fundamental law that could withstand the test of time.

On his part, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, Mr. Kola Olawoye stated that the enshrinement of the law has reached an advanced stage with the public hearing.

Radio Nigeria correspondent reports that traditional institutions, Afenifere, political groups, the NUJ and other groups submitted memorandums at the hearing.

High-point of the opening was the presentation of a drama sketch depicting the level of insecurity in the country.
