Pandemonium was let loose at Kajola Community in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State yesterday as youths in their hundreds mobilized to burn the police station in the area over police recklessness, leading to the death of three persons including a community Baale.

The angry mobs, amongst other grievances against the police, thronged the Police Divisional Headquarters in Kajola for killing their indigenes at the police checkpoints in the area, along Lagos/Benin Expressways on Saturday evening.

They dumped the three corpses at the Police Divisional Headquarters, Kajola, chanting series of protest songs to register their grievances and declared that they do not want to see police in the community again.

The victims, David Olowofeyekun, Gbenga Abayomi and Kola Akinduro, who was the Head of Korede Village, were on a motorcycle and heading home from their farms.

The community leader, Chief Oloruntobi Maiyegun who spoke with journalists on phone, recounted that he had to spring into action the moment he heard that the people were mobilizing to burn the police station.

But the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, dispelled the recklessness report against the police, saying that the deceased flouted the traffic law and incidentally had an accident.

Nigeria Civil Service Commission, NSCDC, have arrested eight persons in Olowo Community, Odigbo council area of Ondo state, for alleged vandalisation of pipelines and illegal bunkering activities.

The suspects were arrested by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in the state.

According to report, the suspect also deals in illegal adulterated petroleum products and operates illegal dump/storage facilities.

They were arrested by the Agency’s Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad who acted on a credible intelligence report.

Sources said that they were apprehended at their hideout around 0900hours of 21st April 2022.

The spokesperson for the agency in the state, Daniel Aidamenbor confirmed the arrest of the eight suspects.

Aidamenbor said that” eight suspects were arrested at the scene and were loading the suspected adulterated products into the store.

“A black Toyota Sequoia with registration number Lagos APP 134 DX loaded with 70 kegs of 25 litres of adulterated AGO.

“28 kegs of 25litres each of suspected adulterated AGO were moved from the crime scene, six pumping machines and one counting machine.

“Also at the dumpsite which has been sealed and secured, the following exhibits were also recovered, 19kegs of 25litres of adulterated AGO, 5 drums of 200 litres of suspected AGO, 2 drums of 200 litres capacity that is half-filled and 2 drums of 200litres capacity that is about a quarter filled.

“Others are two storage tanks with 3500 litres of adulterated AGO each. Underground storage tanks with four compartments were also discovered at the crime scene.

“The first compartment was empty, the second compartment has 2,800 litres, the third compartment contains 1,500 litres while the fourth compartment has 16,500 litres of adulterated Automated Gas Oil, AGO.

Aidamenbor said that the suspects will be charged to court at the end of our investigation.

He pointed out that “the command, led by Dr Ahmed Abodunrin will not relent in its commitment to fight against oil theft, oil bunkering and all acts of illegal dealings in petroleum products in the state.

A new State executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, ondo state council, led by Radio Nigeria journalist, Leke Adegbite, has been sworn in.  
Adegbite was sworn in alongside other state executive members to lead the union for the next three years.

Others sworn in were Hakeem Gbadamosi of the Nigerian Tribune as the vice Chairman, Ngozi Aduloju as the assistant secretary, Fatima Muraina of the Hope newspaper as the treasurer, and Lawani Arinmola as the Financial secretary.

The swearing in ceremony was performed by the NUJ President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo represented by his vice president, B zone Mrs Ronke Afebioye- Samo under the supervision of a legal professional, Iyiola Afolabi.

Performing the swearing in ceremony, Comrade Isiguzo urged the new executive to be magnanimous in victory.

He also urged the new Chairman,to reach out to all parties and be a leader of all members regardless of who they supported during the election process.

In a remark, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC , comrade Sunday Adeleye, promised that the labour Union would continue to support NUJ in all its activities.

In his acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Prince Leke Adegbite promised to prioritize welfare and training for all members.

Prince Adegbite also promised to reposition the Union to be more enviable and become a union that all members would be proud of.

Highlight of the swearing in ceremony was the reading the oath of office by all members of the new State executive council of ondo NUJ.

The positions of Secretary and internal auditor are expected to be filled in through byelection.

The Muslim community in Ondo state has faulted the decision of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to return some public schools to Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs)

At a news briefing in Akure, the state capital, the Chairman, of the League of Imam, and Alfas, Sheikh Ahmad Aladesawe described the move as one that could threaten the growth of education in the state.

Represented by the secretary of the league and Chief Imam of Supare Akoko, Alhaji Abdulrasheed Akerele, Sheik Aladesawe alleged that the development was tantamount to giving out public property to empower some individuals in the FBOs.

The cleric also alleged that such action would deny Muslim children access to such schools.

Sheik Aladesawe the Muslim community would seek legal action if the state government fails to rescind its decision.

Pupils of Ogo Oluwa Community Primary School, Oda Road, Akure, have been urged to speak out against any form of child abuse and to stay away from paedophiles.

The Network of Reproductive Health Journalists in Nigeria NRHJN, Ondo State in conjunction with an NGO made this known during advocacy to the school 

The Ondo State Coordinator of NRHJN, Alhaja Fatima Muraina, identified various forms of Abuse as she called on the pupils to speak out to get help on any form of abuse raging from sexual, physical, emotional and neglect.

Alhaja Muraina educated the children on the various strategies for identifying sexual abusers, which she said might be close relatives, neighbours, uncles and even fathers who may lure them with goodies.

Similarly, the Executive Director of the NGO, Mrs Olufisoye Adenitan said the purpose of the advocacy was aimed at further educating the children on the need to guard themselves against paedophiles in society.

Mrs Adenitan who also stressed the need for the children to always speak out while being abused or assaulted by family members, neighbours or siblings, admonished mothers to be alive to their responsibilities in protecting the children.

She equally spoke with parents who were on the ground about the need for conscious efforts to reduce the spate of sexual abuse which had become rampant in society in recent times.

Speaking on behalf of the school, the Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association, PTA, Elder Ajayi Ademola appreciated the team for what he described as an impactful time with both the children and the parents.

Contrary to the speculations that some policemen in the zone are planning to embark on strike action, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 17 comprising Ekiti and Ondo States, AIG Ene Okon, says there are no plans by policemen attached to the Zone to embark on such industrial action.
Mr Okon disclosed this in Akure, the Ondo state capital, when the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, visited the State Police Command as part of efforts to stop the planned strike action.

The AIG stated that policemen under his supervision would not leave work undone.

In his reaction, the Inspector General of Police, represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Southwest, Mr Babatunde Kokumo, advised against mutiny.

The IGP who said the salary increase for police personnel was being processed, noted that efforts were on to exit the police from the current Contributory Pension Scheme.

On his part, the Ondo state Police Commissioner, Mr Oyeyemi Oyediran, assured the IGP that policemen under his command rejected the strike action.

The National Broadcasting Commission NBC, wants broadcast stations to always operate in line with broadcasting codes before making public their content. 

NBC Coordinator in Ondo State, Mr Sunkanmi Adewale stated this while receiving the new General Manager, Positive FM, Mrs Olubunmi Olalere and some management staff in his office in Akure. 

Mr Adewale described Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN as a modest broadcast station that had been following due process in dishing out credible content in the areas of programmes and news.

While promising that NBC would continue with its robust relationship with Positive FM, Akure, the NBC boss called on broadcast organisations in Ondo state to carry out their operations diligently and in conformity with NBC codes 

 Earlier the General Manager, Positive F.M, Akure, Mrs Olubunmi Olalere had described NBC as an important entity in the media industry and lauded them for actively regulating broadcast content for a more united nation.

Mrs Olalere solicited a better relationship between the commission and positive FM Akure, urging it to continue organising periodic meetings and workshops for media organisations for excellent broadcasting

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari, ordering the removal of the Yobe state governor, Mai Mala Buni as the APC Caretaker National Chairman and replacement with the Niger state governor, Sanni Bello.

A statement personally signed by Governor Akeredolu, expresses confidence in the ability and capacity of Governor Sanni Bello to take APC through a successful National Convention.

Mr Akeredolu insisted that only a few APC governors who he called “Yahoo, Yahoo Governors” were hand in glove with Mr Buni to circumvent the will of the majority of the party’s members and leaders nationwide.

The Ondo governor said no fraudulently procured court injunction could stop the forthcoming APC national convention, adding that Governor Sanni Bello, would be given the full backing of majority of the Progressives governors during the next week Thursday, National Executive Committee, NEC meeting of the party in Abuja.

Radio Nigeria has again been urged not to derail from the path of professionalism for which it has been known since its establishment.

The chairman, Radio Nigeria Positive fm Fans club popularly called “radio family”, Reverend John Olowo stated this when he led executive members of the fans club on a courtesy visit to the new General Manager of the station, Mrs Olubunmi Olalere.

Reverend Olowo said Positive FM Akure had endeared itself to people with unbiased news and quality programmes which had impacted positively on the society.

The radio family coordinator, Mr Olu bright had earlier said the exco members were at the station to pledge their support to the new general, urging her to builld on the success of the broadcast outfit.

Responding,  Positve fm general manager, Mrs Olubunmi Olalere who appreciated members of the radio family for their loyalty and commitment always promised that the station would continue to serve the society without bias.

Mrs Olalere sought the support of the fans club for the station’s forthcoming 20th anniversary for a successful outing.

Family, friends and colleagues of late BBC reporter in Ondo State, Shola Ilesanmi, gathered in Akure, the Ondo state capital on Friday for a candlelight procession and an evening of tributes to celebrate his short but well-spent life.

His friends also announced the launch of ‘The Shola Ilesanmi Solutions Journalism Prize for Campus Reporters’ instituted by his Committee of Friends in partnership with the National Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ) in memory of the late reporter.

John Paul Akinduro, who announced the launch of the journalism prize at the evening of tributes on Friday, said the committee will inaugurate a board of Jurists who will coordinate the submission and review of entries and award of prizes to winners.

“This is our own special way of sustaining the legacy of our dear colleague, friend and brother, who gave his all for the journalism profession and humanity. Shola started his journalism career as a campus reporter at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko in Ondo state, writing for The Nation newspaper’s Campus Life and an AAUA campus-based newspaper.

Shortly after leaving the university, he joined the state-owned TV station OSRC and moved to Orange FM as a pioneer staff when the radio station started broadcasting in 2012 before he was redeployed to OSRC in 2017. He left OSRC in January 2021 to join the BBC as Ondo State correspondent. He was also a media researcher for AFP and worked as a freelancer for local and international media platforms.

In a career that spanned more than 13 years, Shola had a knack for delivering exclusives and unearthing some of the biggest stories out of Ondo state in the last decade.

His exceptional reporting, work ethics and diligence won him multiple awards, including commendation by NYSC in Ondo state, best sports reporter of the year, award of excellence by the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, and outstanding journalist of the year, most supportive alumnus of the National Association of Mass Communication Students NAMACOS, AAUA, and media personality of the year by the National Association of Ondo state Students, NAOSS.

The event featured emotional tributes from his colleagues and friends who described him as a complete gentleman and fair to all.

The Ondo state NUJ through its secretary, Leke Adegbite, spoke of Shola as a committed and popular media personality and compassionate, who cared for the downtrodden.

Chairman ethics committee of Ondo State Youth Network, OSYN, Comrade Bright Idemudia who spoke on behalf of the association, described Shola as a selfless leader and peacemaker who was always there for the association.

Shola’s commitment to developing young people and his service in his local church, where he was a teacher in the youth department, was also recognised and commended.

Some shop owners and travellers on Thursday escaped death when an Ondo bound vehicle rammed into shops at the popular Adebowale junction on Ondo road, Akure in Ondo state.

An eyewitness, Mr Lanre Ojurongbe said the vehicle, a sienna bus which was fully loaded with passengers was heading to Ondo town when a motorcycle suddenly showed up from the old Aponmu road and crossed the highway.

According to Mr Ojurongbe, the driver of the Ondo bound vehicle in the bid not to hit the motorcycle rammed into shops at the Adebowale junction as he was on top speed.

Even though no life was lost, but, some of the travellers sustained injuries and were immediately taken to a nearby clinic.

Some residents around the Adebowale area and passersby appealed to the federal government to construct road breakers on the Akure- Ondo road to prevent overspeeding.

The people of Akure South and Akure North Local Governments in Ondo State will on Saturday file out to vote for the candidate of their choice in the House of Representatives bye-election taking place in the two local governments.

The seat became vacant following the sudden demise of the lawmaker representing the federal constituency covering the local governments, Mr Adedayo Omolafe on August 16, 2021.

Seven political parties are participating in the election with their candidates vying to occupy the vacant seat.

The candidates are: Olawanle Oyemakinde of Accord Party, AP, Oluwawemimo Fadeke of the African Democratic Party, ADP, Alade Olanrewaju of the All Progressives Congress, APC and Joseph Ajayi of the All Peoples Party, APP.

Others are Johnson Olanusi, National Redemption Movement, Olumuyiwa Adu, People’s Democratic Party, PDP and Opawole Tajudeen of the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

The candidates comprise five men and two women.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State Government has announced a restriction of movement in the two local governments till five o’clock in the evening while police and other security agencies have deployed their personnel for the election.

All is now set for the bye-election into the Akure North/Akure South Federal constituency in Ondo State with the distribution of sensitive materials by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC .

The election materials included ballot papers, voting results, replacement and declaration sheets, all transported to the two local governments.

During the distribution in Akure, INEC National Commissioner in charge of Southwest, Professor Kunle Ajayi, explained that the commission had deployed its personnel to ensure a credible and acceptable process.

Professor Ajayi urged eligible voters to come out enmasse and exercise their voting rights. 

Also speaking, the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ambassador Rufus Akeju noted, that with the level of arrangements already in place by INEC, it was certain that the election would not only be free and fair but will be conclusive.

Talking about the participating political parties, the state’s Chairman of the National Rescue Movement, Mr Olajenyo Ataunoko, APC Central Senatorial Chairman, Festus Aregbesola and the PDP Akure South Agent, Mr Taiwo Akintade said they were all prepared for the bye-election.

They urged INEC and security agents to remain neutral throughout the exercise. 

Also speaking with Radio Nigeria, two of the electorate, Mrs Ibukun Adeolu and Ayo Micheal showed great enthusiasm towards the bye-election. 

Meanwhile, the police in ondo state have said adequate number of personnel had been deployed for the exercise in the two local governments of Akure South and Akure North to ensure a violence free exercise.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmi Odunlami maintained that there would be restriction of movement between eight o clock in the morning and three o clock in the afternoon within the two council areas.

 Seven political parties are participating in the bye-election which became necessary following the death of the lawmaker representing Akure North and South Federal Constituency, Mr Adedayo Omolafe in August, last year.

The National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, has sanctioned eighteen corps members in Ondo state for contravening the rules guiding the scheme during their service year.

Out of the number, nine corps members had their service year extended for various misdemeanors while nine others would have their service year repeated for absconding from service , both sanctioned were however subjected to the approval of the NYSC headquarters .

The NYSC coordinator in the state, Mrs Victoria Ani announced this during the passing out ceremony for the 2021 batch ‘A’, Stream 1, corps members held in Akure,the state capital.

The coordinator however pointed out that, a Corps member was rewarded with state honour and twenty five others received state coordinator’s commendation certificates.

Mrs Ani called on the Corps members to be good ambassadors and eschew criminal acts, if they wanted to achieve in life.

In a message, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu gave the assurance that, the state government would always provide security to corps members who chose to stay behind.

A woman has been arrested by the Police in Ondo state for inflicting injuries on a house boy for stealing meat from the pot.

It was gathered that over 10 different injuries were inflicted on the boy by the woman.

Her arrest followed a trending video on Twitter

The incident happened in Adebowale area of Akure, the state capital.

As a result of the injuries inflicted on the hapless boy, blood was seen gushing out from his body in the video.

The spokesperson of the state police command, Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed this development.

She said the case would be transferred to the criminal investigation department on Monday.

In the meantime, the boy has been taken to police clinic in Akure where he is currently receiving treatment.

A popular social media influencer, Yemi Fash followed the case to the police clinic and said he is not willing to back out until justice is served.

Mr Adu Olumuyiwa has emerged as the candidate for the People’s Democratic Party PDP ahead of the federal house of representative bye-election for the vacant Akure north/south seat slated for the 26th February 2022.

Mr Adu Olumuyiwa won the election with 98 votes to defeat other four aspirants.

The seat occupied by PDP in Ondo state became vacant following the demise of Mr Adedayo Omolafe Isaac last year.

Two hundred and fourty delegates from two local government which are Akure north and south participated in the election which was supervised by staffs of the independent national electoral commission INEC.

Reacting,chairman of PDP in Ondo state Mr Fatai Adams called on all aspirants not to see themselves as rivals but as winners and work together as a team to reclaim the seat at the green chamber.

Some of the notable delegates present at the election included former deputy governor of Ondo state chief Omolade Oluwateru and Mr Eyitayo Jegede,a PDP governorship candidate in the last governorship election in Ondo state.

Residents of Okeluse Community in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State have fled the area after an attack on a petrol station in the area by gunmen resulted in the death of the dealer and attendant.

The five man gang reportedly stormed the Community on motorcycles around 9pm on Monday.

The dealer, identified as Oladimeji Aborowa was reportedly killed on the spot while the attendant rushed to the hospital later died of the injuries he sustained.

The residents said to be in panic after the attack took to their heels for safety.

The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident saying the suspects came to Kidnap the owner of the filling station.

She said a team of policemen and vigilante operatives have begun a manhunt for the assailants.

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, has congratulated the people of Ondo State on the grace to witness the new year 2022.

Governor Akeredolu, who rejoiced with the people of the state, said despite the hurdles and the challenges experienced in the outgone year, God’s grace sustained the state, her people and the country at large.

The Ondo State House of Assembly has passed into law the 2022 Budget of over One Hundred and Ninety-Nine point Two Billion Naira.

The budget after scrutiny and defence by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs by the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, headed by Mr Sunday Olajide had an increment of about Seven Billion Naira from initial over One Hundred and Ninety-One point Six Billion Naira submitted to the House by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

The budget has a provision of over One Hundred and Twelve point Nine Billion Naira as Recurrent Expenditure and over Eighty-Five point Six Billion Naira as Capital Expenditure for the services of Ondo State of Nigeria for the year ending 31st December 2022.

The Lawmakers at the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun recommended among others things that MDAs should ensure that the provisions of the Budget are applied to the needs stated therein.

According to the House, in order to attain the target for the internally generated revenue for the year ahead, the State Government should take all necessary steps that will propel all income-generating MDAs to embark on more result-oriented internally generated revenue drive in line with extant Laws.

The Lawmakers urged the State Internally Revenue Service to identify all sources of Revenue leakages and ensure that measures are put in place to block all these leakages.

Operatives of the Amotekun Corps in Ondo State have arrested a member of a kidnap syndicate in Akure for kidnapping four female church members during a vigil service.

The suspect who disguised as a woman was arrested one hour after he invaded the church at Edo Lodge Area of Oke-Ijebu Akure with members of his gang.

The man who wore a blue gown with members of the gang kidnapped four church members including a priest.

Parading the suspect and 20 others, the Ondo State Commander of Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye said the suspect was arrested at a spot along Ado Ekiti road while others escaped.

The commander also paraded 21 others who specialised in kidnapping, theft, and sales of Indian hemp.

Chief Adeleye added that about three hundred and fifty motorcycles and vehicles were impounded in the last two weeks during the corps’ stop-and-search operation of unregistered motorcycles.

In an interview with newsmen, the suspected kidnap mastermind, Abiodun Igbekele confessed to molesting the four female victims including a 78-years-old woman.

In his homily, titled “if you miss eternity”, at the open-air Interdenominational service, Pastor Oshioyemi of Christ Church of New Testament Aladura, Ondo, said the “Christian race on Earth was targeted at making heaven and being with God”.
Pastor Oshioyemi maintained that testimonies from children, families , neighbors and the church of God were all affirming that mama was in the bosom of her maker .

He enjoined the children and all present at the funeral to emulate Mama’s good works and even try to surpass it.

In a tribute , the children described their mother as a strict disciplinarian with eyes for perfection.

Ayaba Comfort Boladale Aladenika who died at the age of 91 is survived by 6 children, 21 grand children, 6 great grand children among whom is the former Edo State NUJ Chairman, Otunba Mike Aladenika.
